    Dougie grew up scrapping in the favela. He’s always one step away from getting in a fight, and I’d say he’s really really matured on that front over the last couple of years. But he’ll never totally eliminate it.

    I don’t think United or Newcastle will catch us. I think we will get top 5. Not sure if it’ll be top 4, so hoping for that 5th place CL spot - back every English team in Europe!

    Disagree in that I really like ESR - think he’s a lovely player, think Arsenal should be using him more, and think he’s the sort of player (obvious potential, not delivering it) that Emery has a track record in making very good. Agree in that it’s a position I definitely don’t think is a priority for us so I wouldn’t be splashing any cash on him.

    Also think VAR stopping every game for multiple minutes while players stand around in the cold is likely leading to an increase in muscle injuries.

    I’d still play a defence and goalkeeper however many goals you think Zaniolo can get from that position.

    2+2= something (maybe wrong, maybe right) but it seems to me like we wanted this guy in now as competition, could only get the deal done if we agreed the loan back, hence recalling KKH as our cover for second half of season. All that to say I think this guy could be in and challenging for a starting place for 2024/25 rather than being a longer term prospect.

    I’m a big Zaniolo fan but to be fair I think the two differences are firstly we have already forked out tens of millions for Diaby but could choose not to for Zaniolo, and secondly Diaby has been poorer lately but has had some brilliant games for us earlier in the season, which NZ hasn’t really yet. I agree with your last point though!

    I never mind the blue background because it sits on a claret shirt - those are our colours, and claret on claret never makes logical sense to me. But some of these with a claret background do look lovely.

    I want us to sign Zaniolo but he won’t be the SAME player he was - if he was, he’d be nowhere near Villa. When he broke through people saw him at a Totti/Figo level. He can not reach close to that extreme and still be a fantastic PL player and Italy stalwart. This is me agreeing with your point that those in the know definitely think there’s a player there.

    Not at our best but for a neutral perspective, here is how Andy Brassell at the Guardian (probably one of the more knowledgable journalists in the game) saw today: ”Middlesbrough never really looked quite like forcing a shock win over high-flying Aston Villa but the fact that squeezing out a draw would have felt like an achievement, when it would have been just a solid Premier League result in years gone by, says a lot for the Birmingham club’s current stature. Matty Cash’s late winner, a shot from range wickedly deflected home off the substitute Emmanuel Latte Lath, also spoke of Villa’s pomp. It had the scent of a big side finding a way to get it done, someway, somehow, when Unai Emery’s team selection had suggested a dilemma in how to approach a tricky tie and increasing demands from week to week.”

    Not seeing this take personally… we aren’t on fire right now but I’d say we have more attacking options than I can remember at any time in 35 years watching. And the fact we have scored more goals than anyone in the league except Man City suggests it’s going ok over the course of the season so far…

    Agreed with all this - except for all we know he ALSO believes he’s being used exactly right. Thought he was our best player tonight (low bar admittedly) and that’s all part of learning the game (away, cold night, Championship team, all your usual cliches for a young South American adapting to the UK etc).

    I absolutely love that AC Milan and Inter are both trying to sign him but we think a loan to the Championship is how it might end up…! We will see I guess!

    Interesting to me you have ours as 16 and Arsenal as 1 when basically they are the same key things (crest, big symbol, name). Guessing the differences are the colours, the quality of the lion, the positioning of the letters etc but funny how the main design is so similar but they are opposite ends of your scale. No judgment in this comment, we all like what we like!

    I’d be all about the round badge but I can’t get over the lion facing the wrong way. So either shield for me, but also just do a proper round badge and I’d be happy.
