Definitely the weak spot at the level we are currently at… he’s a much better player than Neil Taylor obviously, but it reminds me of the promotion season when Tammy, McGinn, Grealish etc would zip it around then it would come to Taylor and just… stop. Fine as a squad player but I’d be looking to upgrade.

I love Pau and he takes our game to a different level, but to be fair the question here is “which international defender do we bring in against a Championship-standard team who can’t buy a goal away from home?” - that’s not to sound arrogant, it’s to say either lineup should be able to get the job done... I actually watched the live stream and Emery was on there as well just sending a stream of heart emojis at all the updates and asking for fantasy football tips. Apparently at a club level Villa think Dougie looks so convincing as a tech bro/hipster hybrid media spokesman they are just having him do all the announcements from now on after the Chris Heck video got panned.

Can I just clarify whether on JJ your ‘at the moment’ means ‘in about 2 games since he had 6 months out’? Because I’m otherwise in absolute shock someone would see him as a weak point. He’s a brilliant player who has consistently delivered for us and is still only 22.

Be fascinating to look at a Venn Diagram of the people telling me Zaniolo isn’t good enough with the people who told me Tielemans, McGinn, Douglas Luiz, Ollie Watkins, Digne, and even in his time Jack Grealish weren’t good enough for us. One day patience may extend past 11 league appearances…

I think an FFP discussion would be off topic but it can definitely be used as a loophole (to be fair you’re right it isn’t when we haven’t signed anyone back) and I suspect as more teams replace loads with buybacks they will clamp down. Anyway on topic I’d be sad about this, I think Tim has time to be around the squad and grow, but if it gives us the right financial position for the right player…

I think the striker situation is seen as different (rightly or wrongly) because we saw competition bring the worst out of Watkins, and he thrives as being the ‘undisputed’ striker. We can say “well he needs to grow a pair” but I’d rather do what keeps him scoring goals and just have to trust Emery to judge that. In Jan all I’d be looking to sign is a top class right back, if one is available, and a better backup goalkeeper.

This was my take earlier, but having listened to a couple of podcasts and rewatched the highlights I’ve changed my view (which previously was “leave Maupay on the ground, he’s wasting his own time” - I think Emi does want to start a ruckus to waste time and is happy to take a yellow to do so - he just doesn’t account for Kamara raising his hands. So you’re right he instigated it but I think he had a plan. Anyway, Emery sounds annoyed with Watkins, Emi and Kamara, so I’m sure they’ll all get a talking to

I think if injuries and reds are going to deflate you it’ll be a long old season - we won’t often have our best 11 on the field with no issues. That’s not the modern game. Not that I am not saying it isn’t annoying.

Oh right then yeah I imagine the panel would be fine with it, grabbing people by the chin and pushing them is absolutely within the rules If that’s the best WE can come up with then no-one will be wasting a neutral panel’s time and risking extra games for a frivolous appeal. We are likely going to get a charge and fine as a club from that game. We will be being very meek and mild and apologetic right now.

Absolutely wild to me that people are saying we could/should appeal it. You can think it’s a soft red but no panel in the world is ever going to overturn a red for shoving someone in the throat, however soft it actually was.

My one issue with these stats when you see the “converting two points for a win to three” is I’m sure many of the draws in those old seasons would have been wins if there were extra points on the table (that’s why they introduced the rule after all). Still, I won’t argue with the Emery love!
