The complete and utter chants thread

I was watching Liverpool vs Everton yesterday after the Villa match and I gotta say that 'You'll never walk alone' anthem before the game sounds great.

It has probably been said time and time again, but it would be great if Villa had a pre-game anthem like this, something slow and meaningful where the whole crowd can join in.

Agree

I personally think we need to use 'oh when the Villa go marching in' but the slow version that builds up over about two verses then goes into the normal version. It's very apt to sing that just before the players are walking out and can you imagine the whole ground singing it?

ohhhh whenn the villaaaaaaaaaaa

go marching innnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

ohhh whenn the viiillllaaaa goooo maaarrcchhhiiing iinnnn

i wannnaaa beeeeeeee innnnn theee numbeerrrrr

ohhhh when the villlaaaaa goooo marrrching innnnnnnnn

Yeh, that would sound great sung slowly...a slower pace chant not only lasts longer, but has a different kind of effect, so who knows why so many of them are rushed through nowadays.

Here's the spurs version of that chant sung slowly to begin with and gradually gaining momentum.

Stealing straight from the yiddos? Cringe....

We can come up with something better. I'll come back when I've thought of something, you do the same!

Erm excuse me have you never been to a Villa game?

We have sung this for years. We've sung it slowly gradually gaining momentum and going to the original version but most people don't know it so they just go straight into the regular one.

Ha you patronising ****. K4, and I cannot recall ever hearing a slow version of 'Oh when the Villa'.

That's because the upper holte is now full of 15 year old chavs who would rather sing about a certain Small Heath than Aston Villa. It is sung plenty of times at away games and used to be a regular Villa song in the Holte.

Fair enough. Any other abandoned ex-regulars that we could try and resurrect?

I always liked the 1-10 chants, such as Chelsea's 'ten men went to mow', and Utd's Cantona Xmas one. We got Carson Yeung's dog-eating one, but it's not particularly inspired...

Surely our 'Holte Enders in The Sky' song would be our anthem.

Maybe singing a verse from the original song (Ghost Riders) without changing the lyrics, then singing the chorus... Everyone else's club anthems are the original songs. (Liverpool, SHA, Man Shity)??

I think thats a very good idea.

Verse is pretty long but I guess thats the idea of a club anthem.

An old cowboy went riding out one dark and windy day

Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way

When all at once a mighty herd of red eyed cows he saw

A-plowing through the ragged sky and up the cloudy draw

Their brands were still on fire and their hooves were made of steel

Their horns were black and shiny and their hot breath he could feel

A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky

For he saw the Riders coming hard and he heard their mournful cry

Yippie yi Ohhhhh

Yippie yi yaaaaay

Ghost Riders in the sky

Is there a google translate for football chants?

definitely along the right lines there mate. I think an anthem at the start of every game would be electric.

I think we need to get a whole 'project anthem' thing going where everyone tries to put together an anthem then we vote on the best then we concentrate on getting into the stands.

as far as i know we have sung 'when the villa go marching in' for years, like almost every other team, but spurs were the first team to do it slowly that i am aware of, and they adopted a slow version before us

i no 99% of football chants are recycled/robbed from other places, but we should not use this as an anthem imo

What do you think of this as a more apt alternative?

A rich cowboy called Randy came riding Villa's way,

Upon his leg he bears our crest to show he's here to stay.

He had a dream and in it, more silverware he saw,

To help him build his empire, he brought a man of war.

Their brand and style is classy, their hearts are full of steel,

His fortune Randy's sharing, to make his dream come real.

And with his team of warriors, the table they'll climb high,

Whilst all the Villa faithful, cheer out this mournful cry.

Yippee i Ay

Yippee i Ohhhh

Holte Enders in the sky.

a million times, yes. this is a cracking suggestion, not sure the lyrics even need to be altered.

Sounds great, would the final line 'Ghost Riders in the sky,' be altered to 'Holte enders in the sky' as others have suggested...or would the entirety of the song be kept in its original form?

This is a top suggestion, but maybe launching a competition to get some more people involved and aware of what we are trying to achieve would also assist. I know this would be a hard song to top, but bringing everyones ideas together might even make for some new chants during the 90 minutes of the game.

Aston Villa's facebook group would be the best place to start, as well as a sticky on VT and possibly a link on Villa's homepage? Easier said than done though, of course.

If everybody can learn the lyrics and sing that perfect... Surely has to be

'Holte Enders In The Sky ?'

Yeh, I think changing 'Riders' to 'Enders' or 'Villans/Villa' would sound better, and the last line too. But as others said, the song needs to stay in its original form, bar maybe those few words mentioned above.

Definately needs to be kept in original form. Can see this being a real classic anthem for us if it were to catch on. Obviously change it to hole Enders in the sky.

However who wants the responsibility of trying to get it started?

It's a lot of lyrics for the back of the upper holte to remember! And a johnny cash song may be hard to convince some to get involved...they may prefer a so solid crew song perhaps.

All fansites need to be informed, Facebook? Twitter? Song sheets? Contacting the club direct for help, perhaps a mention in the OS? I know I've heard it played in the ground before games!
