dont_do_it_doug.
Think Mantis may have hit it on the head there, combined with the stats. The stats that prove we're shit at defending set pieces no matter what the competition?
KjParton
Could someone possibly compare this with other teams who are around us in the league? Reading/Southampton/Wigan for example.
The_Rev
World Cup 2010 statistics said there was a goal every 70 corners during the competition. Conceding 1 in 20 is very poor by that comparison. (article) 2010/11 Premier League stats put Fulham as the kings of scoring from corners, scoring from 7% of their corner kicks, or (roughly) a goal from every 14 corners. That is exceptionally good, in fact it is absolutely outstanding when you compare it to the norm for the division. 20% of the teams in the division didnt score from a corner all season, including the team who finished 2nd so it's not like it was only shit teams who couldnt do it. The average for that season was somewhere between 1% and 2% (a goal every 100 corners and every 50 corners). By that measurement our ability to defend corners is very poor. Premier League only stats are good because it is a zero sum game, everybody in the study plays everybody else; and that seasons study says a team will score (and therefore another team will concede) from a corner about once every ten games. We have conceded 4 goals from corners in the last 8 league games according to the OP's stats. We conceded goals from corners in three consecutive games in the autumn. By that measurement our ability to defend corners is woeful. The OP stat is an interesting one but it offers no context. It's like that old joke from The Simpsons where Mr Burns dropped the 1000 gram weight on Homer's head and was disappointed it didn't kill him. "Damn metric booby traps,.It sounded like it should be heavier." **edit** source Edited February 3, 2013 by The_Rev
Pez1974
1 in 20 seems pretty poor to me, as others have pointed out. Plus, conceding 8 goals from corners already this season means we are on course for what, 12 or 13 in the full season, so 1 every 3 games or so. Compare that to us scoring no goals directly from a corner this season (I think) with a couple from a second phase. Plus, no goals from corners last season. Has Randy sold the corner flags at Bodymoore Heath?!? Plus, it isn't just the goals, it's the utter choas a simple corner into the box seems to cause. Seriously, the stats show how shit we are at corners; we know how shit we are; the opposition know how shit we are; and the pundits know how shit we are. TRO
There is only one bunch of criteria right now that really matters We are incapable of holding on to a lead that has resulted in us sitting at 19th in the league heading for the trap door. If someone out there knows a solution ....answers on a post card to : Aston Villa FC , Villa Park,Trinity rd ,Aston ,Birmingham,B6 6HE or call the samaritans, they are expecting/hopeing for your call. Zatman
not questionable at all. should have been dealt by the defenders as Gigi Buffon wouldnt have been able to save most of them

VillaAndLoyal
Stats should be treated with caution at the best of times. But stats with no comparisons? Well, the OP has just wasted his/her time really. Our defending at balls into the box is woeful, even the bumbling Lambert has admitted that. It has nothing to do with 'what the media are telling us'....
Woodytom
There is no problem with the defending from corners/set pieces as the stats prove. Its inevitable that goals will come from set pieces. The problem is the number of corners/silly free kicks we give away - and that is (yet again) players not doing the basics your taught at school boy level. The problem is the number of corners/silly free kicks we give away - and that is (yet again) players not doing the basics your taught at school boy level. The post above from The Rev throws that into doubt- it seems comparatively we are much worse than the average at defending corners, What we need to see, as I was trying to say earlier, is a comparison with other premier league clubs which will show if we are better or worse at conceding from corners. Just plonking some stats for Villa only and then concluding "we're not s bad, then" won't do. Of course, the point about conceding too many corners is probably also valid - again, we would need to see the comparative figures. It's perfectly possible that we concede more corners than others (a corner certainly seems the inevitable outcome of any attack down the left at present) and concede more goals per corner. briny_ear
Man City concede 1 in 10 corners This thread is doing my head in. What is the source of those stats? Is the figure directly comparable with the one given in the OP? Statisitical anarchy seems to have broken out round here.

Zatman
Man City concede 1 in 10 corners difference is that Man City probably concede only about 2 corners per game. we concede about 9 or
Houlston
Man City concede 1 in 10 corners difference is that Man City probably concede only about 2 corners per game. we concede about 9 or 10 Exactly but I think that's what the OP is suggesting, that whilst goals are coming from corners its more to do with the fact we give so many and eventually its inevitable we will concede from them. This goes back to the suggestion that the reason for this is that we sit back too much invite pressure thus giving away lots of corners. But then when playing 5 at the back its hardly surprising.
