Catalonia Independence

Looks like, with 5 leading politicians in exile and others still in jail, the independence parties currently have a narrow lead in the new elections being run by Spain in Catalonia.

Spain has said they do not want independent observers at the elections this time. Apparently there just isn't time to give out the observers accreditations so we'll just have to trust the Madrid government.

The independence referendum did have independent international observers, but many polling stations and officials were smashed up by riot police.

What will they do if the independence parties get a clear majority? I guess the EU will just ask them to keep re running it until Madrid and Brussels get the result right.

The Central Electoral Board (JEC) has warned that international observers can not be accredited to oversee the regional elections that will be held on December 21 in Catalonia

The electoral board have also made an attempt to ban anything yellow on public buildings, squares and fountains etc., as this could be perceived as pro independence.

It's like something from a weird Gilliam movie, I was watching a clip yesterday of some old people tying yellow plastic ribbons around the place and some drafted in cleansing department people trying to pull them down. There's a fountain that has a yellow base and they're switching it off and covering it up.

Could you imagine just before the Scottish referendum, Westminster sending a load of contract cleaners to Scotland to remove anything coloured blue.

Strange times.

Catalan separatist leaders given lengthy prison sentences

Quote

Nine Catalan separatist leaders have been cleared of violent rebellion over their roles in the failed bid for regional independence two years ago but found guilty of the lesser crimes of sedition and misuse of public funds.

The region’s former vice-president Oriol Junqueras was convicted of sedition and misuse of public funds by Spain’s supreme court, and sentenced to 13 years in prison. He was also banned from holding public office for 13 years.

The former Catalan foreign minister Raül Romeva was convicted of the same offence and sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment and handed a 12-year ban on holding office, as were the former regional government spokesman Jordi Turull and the former labour minister Dolors Bassa.

Carme Forcadell, the former speaker of the Catalan parliament, was sentenced to 11 and a half years in prison, while the former Catalan interior minister Joaquim Forn and former territorial minister Josep Rull got 10 and a half years each.

Two influential pro-independence grassroots activists, Jordi Cuixart and Jordi Sànchez, were found guilty of sedition and given nine-year sentences.

Three other independence leaders were found guilty of disobedience and handed fines and bans on holding office.

...

Less than five hours after the verdict was announced, a judge reissued an international arrest warrant for the former Catalan president Carles Puigdemont. Puigdemont, who spearheaded the push for independence, fled into self-imposed exile in Belgium to avoid arrest by the Spanish authorities.

Excellent coverage there on the BBC news, almost a full minute given over to it.

It's news,  even if the BBC don't like it.  I don't understand this,  the Yellow vests people got loads of coverage.

These protestors have actually got a point IMO.

The tories running the BBC probably don't want any pro-independance ideas getting out in the news

Lluis Companys, democratically elected President of Catalonia was executed 79 years ago today by the Spanish state, having originally been sentenced to 30 years in prison but having fled the country in to exile in France.
The more things change, eh.

Wouldn’t the tories be more likely to show pro-independence ideas whilst trying to sort out a Brexit?

Ah you see there's a big difference to us wanting the leave the EU and Scotland wanting independence from the UK and remain in the EU

Succession from a country is not the same as leaving an economic bloc

You've fallen for the sovereignty trap

I was thinking more about how the news would paint a bad picture of how one of the key EU nations are treating their citizens which would help with Brexit propaganda.

If Catalonia ever got independence (not that it would ever happen) they would never be allowed to be part of the EU.

Spain has a blocking vote in the EU.

16 days 'before brexit' our government isn't going to do anything that upsets the Spanish state. You're confusing diplomacy and politics with doing the right thing.
