Italy v England Freindly

No, his performances for the England youth teams (every level from U16-U21) and GB teams during the Olympics warrant an international call up. I know he plays for the Blues so we are all supposed to hate him and think that he is shit, but Jack Butland has been very much within the FA's system for four of five years now. Given how everybody was calling for the FA do more in bringing players through after the 2010 World Cup, isnt this what we all wanted? Or are we supposed to forget that because he currently plays for the shitcunts?

As for the Chris Woods & Nigel Martin comments? Well, the blindingly obvious answer was that they were being kept out of the team by David Seaman, who is one of the best two or three goalkeepers this country has ever produced and they were active in an era where England played far fewer meaningless friendlies so there were no games like this for them to play in. In years gone by this game vs Italy would have been a B international. But television companies cant sell B internationals so it got "upgraded".

I actually dont mind blues, prefer them to Liverpool, Manure, Arsenal etc.. if i werent a Villa fan I'd be a blues fan.

Having said that he hasnt even played for them yet.

I don't see personally how the FA can get someone whos never played at a better standard than regular league goalkeepers

It's because he has worked within the FA system and with FA coaches for a number of years. They obviously believe in him. You speak like he is some bloke they have just randomly pulled in off the street.

I think people should be selected on merit, not who they know thats all.

Valid point on Woods and Martyn, didnt have pointless friendlies those days.

But if he has proven himself in the many hours of training sessions and the youth and Team GB internationals he has had, where he has been under close scrutiny from the FA then isnt that as good (or better) than just being able to point to a season of first team football that hardly anybody from the FA watched?

I haven't said he's shit or anything.. they can continue to do that and watch him for Blues this year (if Fosters moved on yet?) and continue to keep an eye on him and see how he copes before handing out an international debut. He's only 19 afterall.

In the meantime give someone who deserves it a chance.

I think we are going to have to agree to disagree here. I dont think "time served" is a reason to pick one player over another. He is coming into this game a week or so after being very impressive in the Olympics, it's a low pressure game and it seems perfect for him. I would agree with you entirely if he was an outfield player as the influence opposition players would have on him is far greater, but the goalkeeper is such a specialised position I agree with what the FA are doing. If they have faith in him then go for it, rather that than just throw some other bloke in because he is five years older.

See Rev now I dont think he was particularly impressive in the GB team, he was at fault for a goal and his kicking was suspect, remember in one of the games he kicked the ball straight to the opposition but they failed to score from 10 yards out.

If the FA think they can cherry pick and train players through their own system better than players who are peforming in a national league system that has been running since the 1800s then best of luck to them.. we will definitely have to agree to disagree on this one.

The likes of John Ruddy who peformed brilliantly for many years would love to say to his grandchildren that he played for England once, must be scratching his head now.
