Shay Given vs Brad Friedel

Discounting the fact that we let Friedel go for free and picked up Given for 3m or so was it, who is the better keeper in your opinion based on ability alone?

So did we actually improve in the goalkeeping department in this season in terms of the personnel? Although factoring in the price could mean a different story altogether.

We signed Friedel for £2.5 million, he was a good all round keeper but not very good coming off his line at corners.

Given for £3 million better at shot stopping than Friedel but also worse than Friedel at coming off his line.

They're the same in ability I think, Friedel less likely to make a mistake, Given more likely to pull off an amazing save.

Bit dumb getting shot of Brad really and then shelling out massive wages on a more injury prone keeper

Both top top pros though IMHO

Friedel wanted a 2 year contract, we only were willing to offer a 1 year contract, sensible from the club really.

How is it sensible ?

By letting him go we had to shell 3.5m fee for SG + woo him with a 5 year contract worth 12.5m so all in all 16m instead of Giving BF a 2 year extension

Madness & Incompetence of titanic proportions

Given (not the player!) the past dealings we've done and especially in terms of recent changes to managers I'm not the least bit surprised. Tottenham are the biggest winners for this one.

Then sign who when Friedel's two years are up?

We're paying £16m for 5 years of a world class keeper.

Both still good keepers. From 10, I'd mark Given as a 9 and Friedel as an 8.5.

If we're comparing the two keepers at this time and perhaps wonder why we passed on keeping Friedel, it's important to remember that Shay is 5 years younger than Brad. In 3 years time it's likely that Given will still be playing well. The same can't be said of Friedel.

2 top class goalkeepers and would be unfair to compare them especially as they are very similar. World class shot stoppers that can win you points and both weak at crosses.

wouldnt be wrong to say without Given we would be in the Championship,

It's difficult to actually prove that, but I suspect you are correct. Given is definitely better than the 'average' Premier League keeper and looking at some of the vital saves he made last season, I don't think most keepers would have made all of them. Given's save from Warnock's own-goal effort, for example.

Given and Friedel were never "world class", good PL keepers but far from the worlds best keepers.

Swapping Brad for Given is like for like but the money spent on Given is just silly.

It's not 'like for like' though, is it? Shay is 5 years younger than Friedel.

When mentioning the money spent of Given please remember that continuing to employ 41 year old Friedel wouldn't exactly be free!

Part of Friedel's ability is his consistency, but then again Given is hardly inconsistent. Where I think Given out classes Friedel is on outstanding saves; the kind of saves that last season prevented a draw becoming a loss. With a better manager and some player investment/improvements it would be great to see Given's vital saves giving wins instead of draw. :)
