blandy Posted March 4, 2019 Moderator Share Posted March 4, 2019 @The_Revare some of those processed or done with filter?- e.g. the tank and the London Fenchurch and the Floodgate street one. There's something about them that looks a bit unnatural and I like them less than the others (though I like them all).
Popular Post bickster Posted March 4, 2019 Moderator Popular Post Share Posted March 4, 2019 Some more from the weekend, this time Raglan Castle, the missus is apparently a direct descendant of one of the owners from the 1500’s so as we drive passed it lots and never stop, we thought we’d break the habit of a lifetime and go in. Because it was St David’s Day it was also free entry. It’s a great pile of old rock, well worth a visit
The_Rev
@blandy everything is post processed, whether that's a snapshot taken with your phone or developing film in a darkroom. Filters are post processing on top of the post processing your phone/camera will have quietly done in the background anyway. I tend to shoot in RAW, which is just raw data that allows you to tinker with the image a little more. Mostly that tinkering just allows for detail recovery in highlights and shadows but you can also mess around with white balance and colour vibrancy. I tend not to go for adding/removing things in Photoshop or artificially sharpening images. As for the specifics of the images you mentioned, Marylebone (the other station on the Monopoly board that isn't world famous) is just shot with a very shallow depth of field, f/1.2 iirc, so there are large out of focus areas before and after the focal plane. There is a block of flats off in the distance which almost blends in with the roof of the trainshed and it looks kinda eerie. Floodgate Street is shot with a wide depth of field, f/11, which keeps everything in focus but has the side effect of making lights have a 'sunburst' effect. People tend to either like that or hate it. As there is such contrast between the highlights and shadows in the image I think the lights would look ugly if the lens was wide open. It was also a long exposure, can't remember how long exactly but it would have been several seconds. The Tank does look like that. It's very brightly and very frequently painted.
Popular Post The_Rev
Few more from me. I don't like doing huge image dumps as I feel people's eyes glaze over after a while so here's half a dozen: Edgbaston Reservoir. Roof of New Street station, Ladywood House and the Rotunda. Under the roof at New Street looking towards the BT Tower. Bethel Presbyterian church of Wales, B1. It's between the Sentinels on Holloway Circus. Wonderful bit of graffiti by Lucy McLauchlan, Digbeth canals. And my favourite bit of graffiti in all of Birmingham, the low poly fox by Annatomix, also on the canals of Digbeth.

The_Rev
Six more. The mean streets of Digbeth viewed from the railway viaduct. Looking towards Elephant & Castle from Lambeth. This is the street where Dexy's Midnight Runners shot the video to Come on Eileen, the shop they dance in front of is just out of view beyond the bend. Scooter boys, St Patrick's Day Parade in Digbeth. Chinatown, London. Knife Angel statue, touring the UK and currently on display outside Coventry Cathedral. Photo number 89,412 of Selfridges.

bickster Posted April 2, 2019 Moderator Share Posted April 2, 2019 The Knife statue was in Liverpool before Cov and I missed it. 2, 3, 4 & 5 get a big thumbs up from me
The_Rev
I think Coventry is its third stop after Liverpool and Hull. It's off to Gloucester next I think. It looks really good at Coventry Cathedral as it's right next to the statue of St Michael.

Popular Post Risso
Got this one today of a red kite that is nesting in our village. A very common site around these parts, having spread up from the breeding programme in the Chilterns. Edited April 5, 2019 by Risso
The_Rev
I love Red Kites. I think the reintroduction program started at about the same time as I got a job in the Chilterns and seeing their numbers grow over the years has been a real privilege. I didn't realise they'd made it as far north as your neck of the woods.

Superb birds they are.
bickster Posted April 6, 2019 Moderator Share Posted April 6, 2019 I see them quite a lot too, not up here but on my frequent visits to Bristol, I drive down through Mid-Wales and you'll see them anywhere between Newtown and Builth Wells as one of the programmes was in Rhaeadr

Bloke with coffee. Argyll Street, London W1. Kings Cross station, London N1. Cannon Hill Park. Poland Street, Soho, London W1. Someone said this reminded them a bit of the album cover to (What's the Story) Morning Glory, which of course was taken literally around the corner from here on Berwick Street. Sun setting over Birmingham. This was taken from the Jewellery Quarter looking towards Winson Green and Smethwick. I'm trying to figure out exactly where those three tower blocks are, all I can offer is that they are somewhere between City Hospital and The Hawthorns. Man smoking cigar outside a restaurant, Dean Street, Soho, London W1. Waiting for the tube. Marylebone Bakerloo Line station, London NW1. *yes, I'm aware this sounds like a euphemism for a minge.
