Then I look at the prices, and think **** that. Was looking at a few today, but the cheap ones were in bad condition, I think. @rjw63 do the vinyl gradings mean much to you? Always. You can still get bargains on ebay and Discogs but not as cheap as 10 years ago when I had to restart my collection.

It seemed to me £20 was the cheapest going, which is scandalous. just got a very nice copy of Smiley Smile from Discogs, still got shrinkwrap on it from '67, US press on Brother label, just a tennner. Bargain.

mjmooney Posted January 12, 2018 VT Supporter Share Posted January 12, 2018 Must admit, I don't get it. Can you hear any difference between it and all your other (how many?) versions of Smiley Smile? And if not, why open it, and instantly reduce its 'sealed, mint' value to collectors?
bickster Posted January 12, 2018 Moderator Share Posted January 12, 2018 He didnt say it was sealed, just that the shrinkwrap was still on it. I do the same with mine, try and keep the shrinkwrap intact as long as possible to protect the sleeve

When you post up here, are you listening to them, or just sharing what you've hunter gathered? 'Cos you're listening to a lot of music. I'm probs posting a fraction of what I'm listening to, because once an album's out on the table, I'll listen to it for a few days. So I'm probably posting about 25% of what I'm listening to, I guess. On the plus side, I'm watching virtually no TV, thoroughly over that bad habit.

Yes, shrinkwrap was already open. The only difference between the US, UK and Japanese versions I've got, aurally, is the Jap one is stereo the other two mono. And all three labels are different

The ten or so I got for Krizzmuzz have all been played at least once, some of them 3 or 4 times. But, new year new items to collect

'Maggot Brain' a few hundred places behind 'Achtung Baby'? Pretty sure The Edge wouldn't agree with that! I'll look at lists from time to time to find something new. There's loads of mental sites and blogs, but a great all rounder is Rate Your Music. It has some database functionality. You can call up the big list, which would be like your Rolling Stone ting, or break it down by year or genre. The top releases by genre is a really useful function, as it's not just down to the editor like some of the specialist blogs. It's a consensus decision. I've bought loads off the back of RYM. Johnny Foreigner gets involved too, so in the middle of a stack of titles you're familiar with there'll be some that make you go Huh? I know this not! It's also worth going down the lists a way, as there's some proper rarities that aren't given the weight because less numbers are voting for them, but the average score is shown anyway. Generally the reviewing is quite harsh, it's not 5* everything by any means! A couple of caveats. Video game soundtracks are generally over rated, as it's mostly fanboi driven and the wider listening audience don't get involved to drag the scores down to realistic levels. Fairly obviously, beware of really high reviews from a tiny pool of contributors. Last thing - Never forget the Smiths are shit. https://rateyourmusic.com/

As to lists, the "all time, all genre" ones are pretty pointless. By category, then I start to get interested.

bickster Posted January 12, 2018 Moderator Share Posted January 12, 2018 Anyway the most stoned man I ever met. Also the hardest person to get on stage ever. Also one of the nicest people A lot of surface noise on this one. May have to seek out a replacement

Hmmm, I think the Last Poets deserve that credit a bit more. Not all rap annoys me but I doubt I've liked much in the last 30 years. Early NWA, Public Enemy, 3rd Bass, De La Soul and a few others are in my collection but after that, its become complete horseshit. It's not much different to how Led Zep, Sabbath, Deep Purple turned into Mottley Crue, Iron Maiden, Metallica and all the other utterly shite metal that has endured for years in some people's emperors new ears
Chindie Posted January 12, 2018 VT Supporter Share Posted January 12, 2018 Metallica were/are brilliant They developed their own niche of metal, thrash, whilst keeping things melodic and mixing good song writing with buckets of talent and muscianship. How many bands have arguably an entire lineup of 'amongst the best in their field' at inception? And they successfully reinvented themselves with the country tinged stuff in the 90s. They aren't the same kind of band of Sabbath or Led Zep, but that doesn't mean it's bad and they aren't in the same league as Maiden or Motley Crue. Sure there's shit metal, but there's shit everything. And genres can and do evolve. Metallica are one of those 'icon of a genre' bands.
bickster Posted January 12, 2018 Moderator Share Posted January 12, 2018 Another One that means a lot to me, because… It's a great forgotten classic I went from fan of the band to Tour Manager of the next band the nucleus of this band formed Two tracks are produced by Tom Verlaine (the rest by John Porter) Three members of the band are still great friends of mine The Room - In Evil Hour Despite the cover used this track is the Album version produced by Tom Verlaine, not the Peel Session version which Peel himself put in his all time 50 best session tracks
