Also i never wanted MON as manager but still backed him why cant other "fans" back McLeish. Also he was equal MON at his time at Rangers with a more limited budget

Because he is a shit manager!

Scotland doesn't count and 2 relegations, how many times did MON have a team that got relegated?

There is one parallel to draw some comfort from and that is Newcastle United.

They sacked Hughton who was doing reasonably well and replaced him with Alan Pardew. He had been very successful with Reading which led to him getting the West Ham job.

He took West Ham up, got to a cup final and finished 9th. He then precided over their worst run of form for decades and was sacked. He then took over at Charlton mid way through the season, ultimately seeing them relegated from the Premier League (possibly harsh to blame him). Subsequently after failing to get them promoted straight back up (for which he is fully responsible), he led Charlton to bottom of the Championship and was sacked. Following this, Charlton went down again.

He then went on to deliver some modest success at League 1 Southampton but he was sacked due to dressing room unrest and clashes with the owners.

There are real similarities between McLeish and Pardew - both experiencing a real mix of success and failure. This can be extended to many managers such as Sam Allardyce, Paul Jewell, Avram Grant, Lawrie Sanchez - managers who can clearly point to certain successes as well as failures - the list goes on.

The problem - such managers, including McLeish, have obvious limitations in style and ethos - their variable form also makes them a clear risk meaning that they do not demonstrate the assurances over success that a club who claim to have the ambitions we do should aspire to.

This is a backwards step most certainly and whilst I accept there are some limited benefits i.e. our defence last season was atrocious and that will definitely improve meaning it could work out but in the event that it does, I would struggle to credit it to good judgement. The past proves this. Most certainly if McLeish is successful, we will all be delighted, but it will be the luckiest decision Lerner has made and even if it pays off, the risks he is willing to take over this football imply his inability to make rational footballing decisions.

I don't want him to sell up but I would urge him to appoint a CEO with proper footballing credentials to avoid future embarassments.

There are many managers out there who we could almost certainly employ that come with better reputations and credentials. Some are in work, some are not

"From the beginning of our search, we have set out criteria based on proven Premier League experience, compelling leadership, an ethic for hard work and, most importantly, sharing our vision for Aston Villa as we know that without a shared vision any appointment, however attractive, will ultimately fail."

When they talk about 'shared vision' here, surely they should realize the same counts just as much between the fans and the club. Hence, they should see that as this appointment (if it happens) will be incredibly alienating for a great many fans, it will ultimately fail. The only way it can succeed is if he has immediate success on the pitch. Fickle is quite an emotive term here, but all football fans are fickle when it comes to winning - they will forgive almost anything if the team is winning. But the chance of quick success is made all the more unlikely by a) an unhappy fanbase likely to jump on any slip and hamper confidence, and B) the amount of rebuilding the team needs, which will almost certainly take time to work.

There's also a massive contradiction in the statement that they are talking to McLeish because they are seeking "proven Premier League experience" as all McLeish has is failed Premier League experience - relegation 2 out of 3 attempts and a low-scoring bore to 9th place in the other. But they're not even going to consider this anyway because "We are determined, still, not to allow that three-and-a-half year post to disqualify him."

What in God's name have we done to make the board hate us so :(

So what we officially know is Martinez turned the interview down and we're now interviewing McLeish?

The board are even more incompetent than I first thought. They've had 2 months to prepare for this, yet Fulham managed to bag Jol within less 7 days of preparation.

I think McLeish is a decent manager. He's done very well everywhere he's gone, he was MON's equal in every way during his time at Rangers and did a brilliant job with Birmingham. It's expected that Birmingham will be fighting against relegation every season, what's not expected is for them to finish 9th and win a league cup. There's very little one can do to prevent relegation when a squad as weak as Birmingham's is hit with injuries to its key players, nor can one afford to play expansive, attacking football when a teams forward line is as weak as Birmingham's was.

Protesting and refusing to attend games will only harm the club we love. The best thing we can do as fans is at least give McLeish a chance, turn up to VP in full voice and show the world why we are the pride of the Midlands. No man should be judged before he's even had chance to make a mistake!

THIS!! What makes me laugh the most is the fact that the board have in essense stuck two fingers up to the fans and to the media. Firstly, they are using this to suggest to the media that 'YOU WERE WRONG'. We didn't listen to the fans regarding the McClaren embargo. This appointment would just prove that fact. And it also says to the fans; we know best. We may not be avid football fans, but when it comes to business we know what is best for Aston Villa FC. DO YOU HECK! ABSOLUTE CRAP!!

Ill be first to say it. i prefer him to Houllier.

I'll second this.

Anyone But Houllier.

Gerard Houllier is ten times the manager Alec McLeish is.

How would people feel if we wanted to appoint Steve Bruce since he has also had the misfortune of managing SHA.

Would it be a smaller pill to swallow because it would be an indirect movement (Blues -> Wigan -> Sunderland -> Villa) ?

Whereas McLeish is pretty much direct Blues -> Villa

Just wondering what kind of reaction there would be if it were Steve Bruce instead of Alex McLeish?

What an on-going shambles. Once again the board are making the biggest thing about it ever when there's absolutely no need to. Stupid worded official statements released every few days to control media speculation yet basically just give a yes or no answer. You know the funny thing about all this though? Fulham. They lost their manager and within days picked up a manager we should have been going for since last year. The board is an absolute mind ****.

It has very little to do with the fact that he managed SHA. It's pretty much all about how poorly McLeish has fared in the Premier League. Couple that with the fact that his teams play some of the worst football at this level and you have your reason.

It's not just that though. He relegated them. It's as if the board want a 1-way-ticket out of here.
