Promising Young Players

Depor were shite too though. So we'll see what his real level is. If he is excelling in a good Spanish side it stands to reason he'll excel in a good Spanish league side. Plus he's young so he'll progress. I did a news search on him and there isn't a thing about teams sniffing around him. I'd have thought Real or someone would have a pre-contract agreement by this stage.

Xherdan Shaqiri is a 19 year old Swiss footballer, who currently plays as a midfielder or a winger for FC Basel in the Swiss Super League as well as the Swiss national team.

Shaqiri is also known for his dribbling ability and can finish with either foot. He normally operates in central midfield or on the left/right flank.

Kelvin (FC Porto)

While Porto fans may be excited by the prospect Argentine wonderkid Juan Manuel Iturbe, the Estádio do Dragão will soon be treated to the talents of 17 year-old Brazilian Kelvin. The Portuguese outfit fought off competition from a number of European clubs to the services of the Parana midfielder. With a great left-foot and excellent technique, Kelvin has all the makings of a star of the future. Supported by a good engine room and a good range of passing, Kelvin will arrive in the summer and joins fellow young South American's James Rodriguez and Maicon who are currently making a name for themsleves. With some excellent young talents waiting in the wings, fans will be excited about the future at the Estádio do Dragão, especially under the helm of gifted young coach Andre Villas-Boas.

Bruno Cesar (Benfica)

The 22 year-old attacking midfielder is one of the most impressive players in Série A at the moment, yet his career path could have been somewhat different. As a junior he failed to make the grade in São Paulo's and Palmeiras youth teams and was forced to go back to the lower divisions. He was signed by Santo André as a 20-year old, who were newly promoted to the Brasileiro, but played back-up to the ageing Marcelinho Carioca, making just one game in his debut season. After his retirement when Santo André were relegated, Bruno Cesar seized his chance and lead them to a second place finish. Corinthians coach Mano Menezes was quick to move for his signature and his faith was soon repaid with as Cesar went on to be the star of the side, which fought every step of the way for the Brasileirao title. Scoring an impressive 14 goals in 30 games and assisting another 7, Cesar formed one of the most dynamic midfields in th country along with Elias and Jucilei. A number of European clubs are monitoring his progress.

James Rodríguez (FC Porto)

19 year-old winger James Rodriquez is one of South America's brightest propsects and was linked to Real Madrid, Juventus and Udinese before signing for FC Porto in July 2010 on a four-year deal. The young Columbian shot to fame as part of the Banfield side that claimed the Apertura in 2009 and his stock continued to rise with a string of match winning performances in the Copa Libertadores. Goals against Morelia and Deportivo Cuenca were followed by a brace against Nacional to put Banfield in a strong position to progress from Group 6. Likened to Cristiano Ronaldo, Rodriquez became the youngest ever foreigner to play in Argentina's top flight when he made his debut against Godoy Cruz at 17 years-old in the 2009 Clausara. Capped up to Under 20 level, Rodriquez nicknamed 'El Pistolero' is a very direct player, possessing excellent technical ability, skill and an eye for goal. The youngster came with a huge reputation but has had limited chances so showcase his talent such has been the form of Andre Villas-Boas side.

Juan Manuel Iturbe (FC Porto)

With some hailing him as the next Messi and others likening him to Cristiano Ronaldo, Juan Manauel Iturbe is currently one of South America's hottest properties. The 17 year-old winger who can also operate as a second striker, is currently subject of intense transfer speculation. Impressing for Argentina at the Under-20 South American Championships, there appears to be confusion over who owns the player. With Argentine outfit Quilmes claiming to have signed him on a free transfer from Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno, a host of clubs are waiting on standby ready to take full advantage. Real Madrid, FC Porto, Manchester United and Genoa are just a few clubs who head up registering an interest in the player. Technically excellent with lightening pace and close dribbling skills, Iturbe glides past defenders with ease. Making the game look simple, he has great touch, skill and range of passing. Iturbe has the ability to cut open the opposition with defence splitting passes and is able to dictate the tempo of the game. With Argentina celebrating a golden generation of talent coming through, Iturbe is another name to watch out for and a move to Europe appears imminent.

Sergio Oliveira (FC Porto)

Hailed as the future of Portuguese football is FC Porto’s Sérgio Oliveira who became the club’s youngest ever player to take to the pitch when he played in the Portuguese Cup victory over Sertanense at the age of 17 years, 4 months and 15 days, contributing with an assist to Hulk's goal. His assured performance in that match confirmed Porto have a very special talent on their books and he was immediately rewarded with a three year contract which runs until 2012, with a buyout clause of €30 million. Capped up to Under-19 level for Portugal, Sérgio Oliveira was loaned out to Beira-Mar for the 2010/11 season in order to gain some first team experience. Still only 18 years-old the midfielder has an excellent future and has all the attributes to go on to become a regular for both Porto and Portugal. With a good range of passing and excellent technique, Oliviera is a born leader and his performances at international youth level will have attracted interest from clubs around Europe.

Zezinho (Sporting Lisbon)

The young 18 year-old winger who is currently turning out for Sporting Lisbon, is considered as one of the most talented footballers in Portugal. Having been tracked by Italian giants AC Milan and Inter for some time, there could be a race for his signature with Arsenal and Manchester City recently being accredited with an interest for the player, so much so that Sporting have slapped a reported £17 million price tag on the youngster after learning of City's interest. Hailing from the West African country of Guinea-Bissau, where he is already a fully established international, he was given a Portuguese passport in 2008 which enables him to play across Europe without a work permit. With blistering pace, tricky and good physicality, Zezinho has been described as the next Ronaldo and is currently Sporting's most promising talent.

Nélson Oliveira (Benfica)

Over the years, one area Portugal have struggled with at international level is their apparent lack of quality strikers. Many hope Nélson Oliveira will develop into a world class striker with predatory instincts in front of goal to fill the void left since Pauleta's retirement. Starting life at Braga, Oliviera was prolific at youth level and soon caught the attention of Portuguese giants Benfica who signed the striker at the age of 15. Continuing his development and ability to score goals at youth level, where he scored 24 goals for Benfica's Under-19 team by the half season point, he was loaned to Rio Ave to gain some first team experience. While not scoring, Oliviera impressed in his performances with good movement and ability in the air. For the 2010/11 season the 19 year-old striker was loaned out to Paços Ferreira where he scored on his debut on 12 September 2010 in a 1–1 draw at C.S. Marítimo. Standing at 6ft 1 inches, Oliviera is a strong old-fashioned centre forward who has been capped up to Under-20 level by Portugal.

Diogo Salomão (Sporting Lisbon) (now on loan @ Deportivo)

While he may be a relative late arrival on the world football scene, 22 year-old Diogo Salomão has been hailed as the next Nani. There are striking similarities between the two as both were signed by Sporting from local side Real Massamá. Invited to the club by new Sporting coach Paulo Sergio to take part in pre-season training. One at the Lisbon giants was enough to persuade the Lions to make the move permanent and tie the forward down to a four year contract. Working his way through the youth systems at two other local Lisbon clubs, Estrela da Amadora and Casa Pia, the 21-year winger first hit the headlines in March when he became the first ever player from Real Massamá to be called up to the Portugal U21 squad. With superb skill with the ball at his face, excellent dribbling skills and a stunning chance of pace, Salomão has been tipped as a future regular at international level by former Sporting player Filipe Ramos, who coached the player last season at Massamá.

Samed Yesil

Young German striker currently on the books of Bayer Leverkusen who reminds me a lot of Michael Owen. He's only 5,8 so he's no physical threat but he's technically excellent and has a phenomenal goalscoring record. In 19 German U17 games he has scored 18 goals including some crucial ones in both the U17 World Cup and European Championships. Although you could call him a poacher due to the way he's always in the right place at the right time, he has the ability to run past opposition players and score from range.

Sebastian Coates

Uruguayan youngster who plays for Nacional. The lad is a giant of a defender, but is very much the modern centre back. Funnily enough if there was a criticism it would be that he doesn't use his physique well enough. If I was to compare him to anybody it would be Woodgate in both looks and style of play.

COLIN COOSEMANS (Club Brugge)

How trolling unearthed talent

media_xl_4167066.jpg

Intimidation can be a powerful beast. Just ask clubless goalkeeper Stijn Stijnen. In one of the more entertaining tales of the season past, Stijnen (a regular fixture twixt the sticks for Club Brugge and former Belgium #1) found his once-untouchable starting status under threat at the hands of 18 year-old upstart Colin Coosemans. Everyone reacts to competition differently, though you'd hope a sports professional who'd spent the entirety of his career at the same club would rise to such a challenge. You'd hope that, but Stijnen decided to plump for the nuclear option.

Stijnen promptly registered anonymously (or so he had hoped) on a number of Brugge fan sites and (after spending some time 'bigging himself up') started posting derogatory comments about Coosemans and veteran compatriot Geert de Vlieger in a bid to incite a fan backlash against his competition (he even encouraged fans to bring derogatory banners to matches).

Inevitably, Stijnen's dastardly plot was uncovered (having used his regular email address to register on said forums) and he was promptly reported to club officials. He found himself training with the reserves, and Brugge were forced to expedite Coosemans' advancement for the remainder of the season. Fortunately, this somewhat ludicrous scenario would ultimately yield a very positive result.

Coosemans grabbed his opportunity in the same manner he seemingly does inbound shots; with both hands and an unwillingness to let go. The youngster excelled himself, keeping an impressive 10 clean sheets in 19 games and firmly securing his position as starting 'keeper. "The Magnet" - as he came to be labelled by fans - was also rewarded with a first substitute appearance for the Belgian-U19's, immediately followed by a full debut in which he saved a crucial penalty.

It seemed almost inevitable that Coosemans would be awarded the #1 jersey during the summer, vacated by Stijnen whose trolling antics earnt him the sack. At least Stijnen can take solace that his time on internet message boards will have taught him the appropriate vocabulary to describe his plight; 'Epic fail' and 'facepalm' spring to mind.

KNOWLEDGE MUSONA

Musona280~1.jpg

Zimbabwean international striker, named South Africa's "Rookie of the Year" in 2010 despite only making a handful of appearances for Kaizer Chiefs. Handed an extended run this season, he's currently joint top scorer in the ABSA Premiership.

Update time! Musona has just secured a €1.5m move to 1899 Hoffenheim.

"We watched him for quite a while and were not surprised that he has managed to breakthrough for both club and country. In training, his ability and athleticism were there for all to see. The long-term commitment we have made also shows how highly we value his potential development."
"Knowledge will strenghten the offensive quality of our squad. He is only 21 years old, but for both his club and national team he demonstrated his scoring ability. We want to continue to bring players of such potential to Hoffenheim."
Maybe I should start sending these scouting snippets to Big Eck? :P
