Just said on SSN that Spurs are going to renew interest in Ashely Young

That's another one out the door then. Nobody in their right mind would turn down CL football. I also think Spurs have got a good chance of getting out of the group so it makes it even more desirable.

He'd be cup tied.

true but only until Christmas - then he'd be allowed to play CL (however, with that draw Spudzzz won't make the knockout stages!)

Gabby Agbonlahor injury scare places more pressure on Aston Villa to find manager

So far Aston Villa’s season has been clouded by the fallout from Martin O’Neill’s departure just days before the start of the season, and now their early exit from Europe, but the sight of Gabby Agbonlahor limping off with sore calves before half time against Rapid Vienna has come as a fresh anxiety, one which exposes the club’s desperate need for reinforcement.

Although the 23 year-old’s replacement with Marc Albrighton after 40 minutes was explained afterwards by the club as a precautionary move, doubts over his fitness have placed more pressure on Villa to appoint a manager who is able to make crucial strategic decisions such as bringing in necessary reinforcements before the transfer window closes next week.

Agbonlahor has suffered over the summer and during pre-season with various niggles, including a hamstring problem and a back complaint. Last night’s Europa League match was his first appearance of the season, so his early departure was of serious concern - though it was explained as a protective move to avoid calf strain.

"Gabby's calves were very tight and so we felt it was best to take him off earlier rather than later in case it tended to go into a calf strain which might put him out for a few weeks,” MacDonald explained.

“We are hopeful it might only be a little bit of tightness at the moment but we will not be able to tell until later on Friday. He is a major player for this club and we need to get him fit and keep him fit for as long as possible."

What the striker adds to the team was evident after just 55 seconds against Rapid. The ball was aquaplaning in a way that the big boys in defence loathe and twinkle-toes like Agbonlahor love, and Ashley Young found space to slide in a through ball which Agbonlahor tore onto. His acceleration was too much for Mario Sonnleitner, though his shot was a fraction too near Raimund Hedl. He was more lucky after 22 minutes, scoring Villa’s first from close range.

However, it is apparent that the England international’s fitness is in the balance, and it leaves Villa with deep concerns over who they will be able to call on over the long Premier League season. John Carew, who has had his fair share of ill fortune regarding his health since his arrival at Villa in 2007, has a persistent knee injury which is preventing him from playing more than two matches a week.

The other alternatives are Emile Heskey, Nathan Delfouneso and Andreas Weimann. Firstly, Heskey. The former England international played well against Rapid, to be sure, but his failure to score off the rebound to Stiliyan Petrov’s penalty demonstrated once again that he cannot be called a banker in front of goal.

His primary function has always been to support a goalscorer - if they are all injured, Villa have a problem. The 32-year-old also has a history of injuries - his Achilles is particularly prone to niggles.

Delfouneso and Weimann, meanwhile, are good players in the making but not Premier League class just yet. O’Neill said as much himself last season, and again during the summer. “I expect them to be proper players” for the future, he said, but not ready to carry the weight of the club on their slender shoulders.

Sky are such shit stirrers - they post the article saying Spudzzz are back in for Young (containing no quotes) but then almost immediatley post another Spudzzz story with quotes from saggy face stating 'we're not look to add attacking reinforcements!!!"

Ash wont be sold, I'd put money on that.

I'd love us to use the Milner money to buy Given and a striker - then put Friedel as backup to play cup games..

.. though I know I'm dreaming :winkold:

we need a back up left back as we cannot afford to play players out of position - two goals were attributed to having a right footer playing LB last night.

For me, we certainly need LB cover, another defensive midfielder and a striker - don't think we'll see any one of those three come Sept 1st.
