GarethRDR
That article is brilliant. I especially liked "while Robbie Keane (purchased for £12m) has left White Hart Lane for boyhood club LA Galaxy".
TRS-T
Redknapp has to be #1 contender for the England job. He's English, popular and has a good record as a manager. Think he's also the only English manager to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Hodgson's time at Liverpool have surely harmed his chances. I like Stevie Bruce but can't see him getting it. Also can't see Pearce getting it after our disappointing performance at the recent u21 Euros. Allardyce I very much doubt has a chance. Same with Curbishley and Holloway and Warnock. So that leaves the foreign managers. I really hope that we do not appoint a foreign manager. And I count MON to be foreign (non-English.) So Redknapp has to be the favourite and he would be my choice as well.
TrentVilla Posted August 30, 2011 Moderator Share Posted August 30, 2011 Well the England job isn't going to be available for a good while yet thanks to the spineless and clueless FA so there isn't much point having a discussion about it now. We have no idea what managers relative stock will be when the job becomes available.

TrentVilla Posted August 30, 2011 Moderator Share Posted August 30, 2011 Yeah but that is the best part of 9 months away and as I said who knows what will have happened by then. Redknapp could have been sacked by then if they have a bad season or his date in court might finally have arrived. As I say its a bit early to be having the discussion. TRS-T
I think it matters. Why? Doesn't sit right with me that the manager of the England national football team is not English. All the players are English, so the manager should be English too. Surely that's the whole point of international football. One nation against another - player and managers included. We can have foreign managers in club football fair enough. It's not like all of the English Villa players are from Birmingham. But having a foreign manager at international level (especially for a big nation like England) just isn't right imo. And to me, it doesn't matter if the English managers aren't as good as the foreign managers. I'd rather give them a chance and see how they get on. I've also noticed that we are the only big nation to have a foreign manager. Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Holland, Brazil, Argentina - they all have managers from their own countries. I think it's pretty embarrassing to have a foreign manager tbh.
villa4europe
i was heading the other way, i think the next manager of england has to be english because far too many fans are of the opinion of TRS-T thanks to sven and capello there is some sort of red top stigma attached to foreign managers, where they/england have failed because the manager cant speak the language properly or doesnt understand the emotion or some other way of avoiding printing "we are shit" on the back of their paper even if it was jose or pep IMO another foreigner would be on a hiding to nothing right from the start, capello has been nowhere near as bad as the media make him out to be
Stevo985 Posted August 31, 2011 VT Supporter Share Posted August 31, 2011 If 'Arry was England manager i would find it very difficult to watch England games and support the national side. That may be childish and stupid, but that's honestly how I'd feel. Even if he did amazingly and we won the world cup, it would feel tainted. kurtsimonw
I feel the same to be honest. It's a shame Qatar is so far away, I'd have even more reason for not wanting us to qualify if he was in charge of us then!
