Rds1983 Posted July 28, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted July 28, 2023 Stolen off Reddit... Random football facts that sound fake: - 1.2% of all top flight games played since 1888 have featured James Milner (I've not checked this one). - Motherwell have won the Copa Del Rey. - Anfield was originally Everton's home ground. - AC Milan won the 93/94 Serie A by only scoring 36 goals. - The record for longest headed goal was scored from 58 metres away. Anyone have any other good ones? If not I can steal more from Reddit.

I decided that cannot possibly be true, so did the maths...... in the 135 years since 1888........ 1888-91 (3 seasons) @ 22 games = 66 games per team = 660 matches 1891-92 (1 season) @ 26 games = 26 = 260 matches 1892-98 (6 seasons) @ 30 games = 180 = 1,800 matches 1898-05 (7 seasons) @ 34 games = 238 = 2,380 matches 1905-15 (10 seasons) @ 38 games = 380 = 3,800 matches 1919-39 (22 seasons) @ 42 games = 924 = 9,240 matches 1939-40 (abandoned) @ 3 games = 3 = 30 matches 1946-87 (41 seasons) @ 42 games = 1722 = 17220 matches 1987-88 (1 season) @ 40 games = 48 = 480 matches 1988-91 (3 seasons) @ 38 games = 114 = 1,140 matches 1991-92 (1 season) @ 42 games = 42 = 420 matches 1992-96 (4 seasons) @ 42 games = 168 = 1,680 matches 1996-23 (27 seasons) @ 38 games = 1026 = 10,260 matches = a total of 49,370 top flight matches since 1888 James Milner has played 571 top-flight matches.... = 571/49370 = 1.156% - rounds up to 1.2% Well bugger me sideways... it IS true!!! This was bothering me too so I started doing the maths and then realised I had much, much better things to do with my time. So thanks for checking this. The really crazy bit about this though is that Milner only has about half the top flight appearances that Peter Shilton has.
