Stolen off Reddit...

Random football facts that sound fake:

- 1.2% of all top flight games played since 1888 have featured James Milner (I've not checked this one).

- Motherwell have won the Copa Del Rey.

- Anfield was originally Everton's home ground.

- AC Milan won the 93/94 Serie A by only scoring 36 goals.

- The record for longest headed goal was  scored from 58 metres away.

Anyone have any other good ones? If not I can steal more from Reddit.

Was this the time of Maldini, Costacurta et al? The best defence ever assembled perhaps?

I decided that cannot possibly be true, so did the maths......

in the 135 years since 1888........

1888-91 (3 seasons) @ 22 games = 66 games per team = 660 matches
1891-92 (1 season) @ 26 games = 26 = 260 matches
1892-98 (6 seasons) @ 30 games = 180 = 1,800 matches
1898-05 (7 seasons) @ 34 games = 238 = 2,380 matches
1905-15 (10 seasons) @ 38 games = 380 = 3,800 matches
1919-39 (22 seasons) @ 42 games = 924 = 9,240 matches
1939-40 (abandoned) @ 3 games = 3 = 30 matches
1946-87 (41 seasons) @ 42 games = 1722 = 17220 matches
1987-88 (1 season) @ 40 games = 48 = 480 matches
1988-91 (3 seasons) @ 38 games = 114 = 1,140 matches
1991-92 (1 season) @ 42 games = 42 = 420 matches
1992-96 (4 seasons) @ 42 games = 168 = 1,680 matches
1996-23 (27 seasons) @ 38 games = 1026 = 10,260 matches

= a total of 49,370 top flight matches since 1888

James Milner has played 571 top-flight matches....

= 571/49370 = 1.156% - rounds up to 1.2%

Well bugger me sideways... it IS true!!!

This was bothering me too so I started doing the maths and then realised I had much, much better things to do with my time.

So thanks for checking this.

The really crazy bit about this though is that Milner only has about half the top flight appearances that Peter Shilton has.

Rossi; Tassotti, Baresi, Costacurta and Maldini.

I'm sure one season, they only conceded about 15 goals?

In 1983 Aberdeen beat Real Madrid to win the European Cup Winners Cup?

Dundee United have played Barcelona 4 times, and won every game.

Last meetings were in the 1987 UEFA Cup quarter final, where the Tangerines beat Barca, managed by Terry Venables, and including Gary Lineker and Mark Hughes, home and way.

Really? I like Dundee United. East Fife are my Scottish team, but I have a soft spot for DU.

Yeah this is the same season OP mentioned. Chelsea also only conceded 15 in 38 in 2004/05!
