overall, i am over the moon with the way the club is being run, and the progress we are making...

starting to get slightly itchy feet over the coming season though, as we are ridiculously light in terms of quality and numbers, and this is a situation purely from the managers doing...

so he really has to rectify the issues that he himself has created, by getting rid of so many who could more than do a job, and not replacing them with anybody because he wants the "right quality"... for me, having players that can do a job, is better than not having any players at all for cover and competition...

Impossible to answer for me.

Why?

Is the poll not working on your computer

For me, it feels like we have been spun some very slick Marketing / PR - but I think the value of that may have just ran out.

Off the pitch we have improved everywhere.

On the pitch, it really doesn't feel too different to the pre-Randy days, circa 1982 - 2006.

As its results on the pitch that win you things, I have to vote 'Not Happy' :(

I know it's your opinion, so you can't be wrong.

But in regard to the on the field stuff, we have improved every season Randy has been here, quite considerably too. From 16th to 11th then from 11th to 6th. So to say we've not improved on the pitch and it feels like the HDE days is a little unfair I feel, but it's your opinion and I respect that.

I guess what I mean is that we have been here under HDE, having a strong foundation from which to build - and we never did, we missed chance after chance to push on.

It feels the same in that respect.

Finished 6th, in Europe - lets kick on.........instead we have a a squad that would be hard pushed to play half a season, let alone a full one with Europe on the agenda

Because I'm obviously not happy with how things are currently at VP. But it's hard to explain.

Because I think the manager is excellent, and I think Randy, General K and the board, along with the people working behind the scenes at VP are brilliant.

So I'm sort of stuck. When the unmovable object meets the unstoppable force and all of that.

I just can't work out in my head what's going on. Perhaps it's something about Villa. Perhaps there always has to be something going on. Dunno. I've just lost the thing of actually caring at the moment.

Just roll on the start of the season. If we are great then ace, and if we are crap then oh well.

I know what you are saying John.

I realise that the people we have in charge are obviously very decent, professional people - and the things they have delivered off the pitch have been second to none.

I also appreciate that Randy has made funds available, and that we now have 2 or 3 great players at the Club as a result.

I think it is connected to the fact that we can all see a big opportunity to push on, and we seem, for whatever reason, very reticent to take it - which is in complete contrast to the messages we are being told on a daily basis.

Its frustrating.

I feel much the same as you, John

what confusess me is how we can find ourselves so far away when we are in fact so close.

for all the things that have been written and said..... it appears the most significant things are they, that have been unsaid.

I voted yes for a few simple reasons.

1) As a team we are streets ahead of where we were when MON and Randy took over.

2) We have UEFA Cup football again and have achieved Europe two years into a five year plan which I reckon is ahead of schedule.

3) That five year plan was intended to build a team around the talent of Barry and his actions this summer have, I think, de-railed the carefully laid plans of MON. That is why this window looks a bit bonkers at the moment but ALL of the statements coming from the club recognise the same facts that we do - we need numbers and quality in serveral positions and are doing our best to get them, while also possibly adjusting some targets to cope with the loss of GB. Fine, it makes sense and I'm happy to accept that and let them get on with it.

4) Yes it would be nice to have everything done and dusted by now - and four players in is not a bad start - but I recognise the market doesn't operate to benefit AVFC and things will happen when they happen. Neither you, I or anyone else bleating about it wont make any difference so why become semi hysterical? ( that is not directed at any individual just an observation of some peoples apparent thought processes.)

In short a little more composure and objectivity would go a long way to cheering up those who are currently upset, which I'm not, at all.

I'm very happy with everything. I haven't been this happy as a Villa fan for at least ten years. I'm slightly nervous about us needing a few players, but I seem to feel this way every transfer window, but it always seems to figure itself out. So, having leanrt from past experience (this is after all MON's fifth window in charge at Villa) I've learned to just ignore my worries becasue ONeill has proven to me in the past that no matter what I think of his transfer policy he seems to make it work on the pitch, so my worries and opinions on who he buys and doesnt buy are shown to be stupid, because basically he knows better than me, and has proved it again and again and again. So I just sit back, rather nervously, and spend my summer drinking beer and kicking a ball about on the beach, because that, really, is how you should spend your summer - not glued to the itnernet; looking at this rumour or that one or this clubs signings or that clubs - because you will drive yourself to distraction. Why do it?

By the way - For a club with no money we dont half act like a club with loads of money. maybe it was just me that noticed that on Wednesday we turned down, on point of principle, eighteen million of your British pounds sterling. A month or so back we turned down, on point of pricniple, two to four million pounds for shirt sponsorship.

Obviously we are gagging for cash. Obviously

Am I happy - yes absolutely. I've bought my first season ticket for 15 years and looking forward to a bright future under RL/MoN. I'm annoyed about the way Barry has acted all this summer. If he wants to go then put it in writing officially, not in the papers and forego your £2m. I'm also a bit confused about what taking the next step forward means for some people. For a lot it seems to be challenging for 4th this coming season. Well on last years points that 17 we've got to make up and thats a big ask.

I'd much rather consolidate and have a couple of seasons around 5-7th place. and then look to build on that. Stability and strength not boom or bust.

Yes we need to build the squad, but remember all those clubs who finished below us last year had bigger squads, specialist positions filled, yet Villa still finished above the majority of the Premier League. Now I know that means nothing for the coming season but it also shows that there is no such thing as a guarantee in football.

UTV til I die.

It's not quite as easy to answer right this minute as it would have been say at the end of last season - an obvious Yes.

Thing is, though, I think all it really boils down to is the transfer comings and goings of players and how we feel the team will do next season based on the current squad "strength"

Off the pitch, all is well, very well indeed.

The transfer/squad situation is currently not at all good. It's shockingly weak. But, we don't have a game tomorrow.

And then there's the Barry situation where a combination of player power, agent influence and Liverpool's shenanigans combine to show Premier league football to be a grubby business.

Right now I'm alarmed by the weakness of the squad, understand that activity is taking place to rectify that but don't know what, or who are the targets, or what the delay is caused by.

So I'm with JC. I'm not "happy", because I'm concerned. But I'm not "unhappy" because I believe that things will change in terms of the squad.

Yes, overall I am happy.

I would be lying if I said that some issues haven't really grated on me lately (Barry and Liverpool).

I'm concerned/nervous over some things as well, but that doesn't mean I'm overly unhappy.

I suspect the coming few weeks will be another huge turning point in the direction the club is going. It will either allow us to at least consolidate, possibly improve on last year (which is all I ask at this stage), or it will see us slipping backwards.

If its the latter, then I will be very unhappy, but right now I'm happy enough to wait and see what happens. We've already got 3 main signings in - I was expecting 6 to 8 over the whole transfer window. I still expect another 3 to 5 signings, and don't see the point in wasting time and energy worrying quite yet.

It would have been interesting had we had this poll at the end of last season and again at the end of the forthcoming season.

Or maybe we could have a sticky with a poll that is open for a short amount of time - updated again in December and again at the end of the season. It would be an interesting comparison.

Its been a very disappointing summer though.

Fans have been dreaming of Europe and pushing on in the league. Instead we got the Barry saga, Mellberg leaving, no full backs (either side) two weeks before our opening game, a dodgy performance in the Intertoto and a squad that has fourteen, maybe fifteen "first team" players (and im being generous with that count i think).

The truth is that many people on this and other internet sites are at their happiest when they’re miserable.

I agree with this comment entirely and the fact I would use to back my argument is the number of posts on this site after a loss is far in excess of the amount of posts when we win.

Bad news is good talking points I guess. There's only so much you can say when you win and everyone's agreeing with you.
