useless
Good goal from Tommi O'Reilly, nearly scored a great goal just before that as well. winning by two goals now, Frith with the second, more good play from O'Reilly with the assist. useless
It's only half-time, but I think that's comfortably the best they've played so far this season from what I've seen, should have scored more though, scoreline could have easily been five plus if we'd have taken our chances. Tommi O'Reilly, Frith, and Shakpoke looking really dangerous.

I Make Pies
Every now and again we seem to play a strong team and batter someone. That was today. Shame we can't put a team like this together more often.

useless
O'Reilly might get a loan this January, watching the first half and the ease with which he was able to go past players and the way he dropped his shoulder reminded me very much of Chukwuemeka when he played for us at this level. In fact could well be that half of the team that played today aren't with us for the second half of the season, Revan, Raikhy, Bogarde, Tommi O'Reilly, and maybe a few others could all be loaned out, so in a sense just as U21s improving they might have to start over again, but results are secondary to individual player development at this level, and will be a good chance for some of the younger players to step up, truth be told we've got some very good ones in our U18s so might actually do better with those, Kellyman got off to a good start today. I agree. Theres alot of talent at u18 level. Maybe more than what i had thought we had Young Wilson , Moore Broggio and Lynch up front ( 4 of them internationals ) plus Burchall injured. Munroe Simpson Pierre and Kellyman in midfield ( 2 of them internationals ) Barber Rowe Patterson feeney smith in defence . ( 5 of them internationals ) To put that into perspective we had Chrisene Carney Ramsey Bogarde Swinkels and Marschall who were internationals in our all conquering youth team of 2 years ago. As always we have so much talent that is so young.and they will flourish by playing 4 or 5 years above their age group .
Popular Post OutByEaster? Posted December 21, 2022 Moderator Popular Post Share Posted December 21, 2022 I thought we were excellent today. We could and probably should have had more goals, their keeper made a couple of terrific saves and Raikhy hit the post, but all over the pitch we were the better side and dominated things. The balance in this side was excellent - it was a sort of asymmetric shape that works really well - with Smith at right back, it meant that O'Reilly could stay high and wide as an extra forward while Smith stayed at home and covered and with Smith home it meant that on the other side Revan could get forward and join attacks with Raikhy playing much narrower as a more traditional almost-centre midfielder. Bogarde protecting and three natural centrebacks in a back four meant we looked very solid and Guilbert was able to manage things in the middle - up top, the physical presence of Shakpoke proved enough of a distraction to allow the clever, quick play of O'Reilly and Frith to create things. It's interesting in that it wasn't a typical Emery shape, and although we played out from the back a lot, it looked like the backroom staff have been given more freedom to pick a side and play it in the way they'd like rather than have a system rigidly imposed on them from above. Perhaps, anyway. Shakpoke reminds me a little of Keinan Davis in a way, not particularly in style, although they do have similarities, but in their physicality and development, Shakpoke is tall, broad and powerful, but you can see he's still trying to figure out exactly how to make those gifts work to his advantage, and I think Davis was very similar in that it took him quite a long time to develop into the very handy striker he is today. Shakpoke might need a bit of patience, but he has a very high ceiling. He did a very good job of leading the line today. For me, the best of ours was a player who doesn't always get a lot of love; Declan Frith. I'm always a little surprised by the lack of attention he gets, he was really good today, busy, inventive and hardworking and he finished with a goal and two assists for his troubles. He's great at wriggling and twisting through spaces with the ball at his feet and at this level at least, he always seems to make things happen. He seems to need a fair bit of attention from the coaches during games, and they're always moving him five or ten yards one way or another, "move out of the space", "deeper", "stay out there", all of that type of thing, so he's another who may need a little patience while he figures those things out, but I'd be surprised if he doesn't make himself a decent living in the game at some level - and hopefully that's a high level - he was brilliant today. With Kadan Young presumably with the first team for our behind-closed-doors friendly, these two on the pitch, Kobei Moore in the stands and youngsters coming through we've got some real depth in the forward positions and it bodes well for the future. Kellyman had a fun cameo, scoring confidently with his first touch of the ball and showing some good things. He's tall and he gets around the pitch very well, covering a lot of ground, but where he really impressed me today was in a burst he made through the middle of the park a few minutes after his goal - it was powerful, very quick and he made it with his head up - as he grows and develops more power, he could be very difficult to stop when running with the ball through midfield. A word also for Frederic Guilbert, who plays these games in exactly the right way, he's not here for a little runabout, he gets stuck right in and gives his all. I suspect this might be his last appearance at any level in a Villa shirt and whilst he's not left a lasting legacy with the first team, he's been professional and available and he's done good work with the Under 23's and Under 21's when a lot of players would have sulked their way through. Merci Frederic and bonne chance. The ref was strange in a way, the game was very hard fought with no one leaving anything off it, in a Premier league game there might have been seventeen or eighteen bookings and it's unlikely that we'd have finished with twenty two players on the field. I wondered if he had control of the game, but watching it, there never seemed to be a hint of things boiling over and it was noticeable that none of the players were complaining too much about some of the tackles. Hard but fair maybe; I think on balance I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and on that basis he was one of the better ones we've had this season. Always nice to get a win at Bodymoor, where temperatures have steadfastly remained set to "last week" and nice to see some of these making good progress on their development. A good win, good signs and good players doing good things. More please. 6

OutByEaster? Posted January 7, 2023 Moderator Share Posted January 7, 2023 Be an interesting selection for Newcastle away - you'd guess they'd travel up tomorrow and we played a strong U19 line up today, there are likely to be a few on the bench for the FA Cup tie - I wonder if we'll see a lot of changes again.
