Corleone
Unfortunately i was to young to be able to attend the match but i remember watching on the TV at home and giving my parents a heart attack when i leapt from the sofa and landed in front of the TV on my knees after Peter White scored in the 67th Minute and then the 23 minutes that followed whic seemed like days At the tender age of 11 i wasn't fully conversant with the offside rule so when Bayern scored what i thought was the equaliser it took me a couple of minutes before i realised that we were still winning and then when Cowans put the ball in the net in the last minute i celebrated again in a similar fashion to the first goal. I can remember the build up the to the game and the feeling of trepidation / knowing that we were the overwhelming underdogs, i even remember having a weird dream the night before where i set up one of my 11 year old school classmates in the final against Bayern but we lost 4-1 I can even remember going out to play football before tea time with a knot in my stomach and a feeling of impending doom even though i had only started following villa the year before at the start of the championship winning season and as a result only been used to us winning. What are your recollections of the match and the day? Mods feel free to delete this thread if it already exists elsewhere but i couldnt find it on the search Edited May 7, 2022 by Corleone

Popular Post DaveAV1
I was in Rotterdam. When Peter Withe scored the place went mad. Then the enormity of what had just happened sank in, my mates were to my left and I was welling up, I looked to my right and this huge bloke was sat down crying, I sat down next to him and the floodgates opened. I was ok at the end although as @Corleone said it was the longest 23 minutes in the history of time. I remember us all singing Rule Britannia as it was during the Falklands. A truly mental couple of days. Our coach was one of the first to drop us at the ground and we all got the local train into Rotterdam. On walking out of the station everywhere was red and white so that wasn’t good but we walked and turned the corner into the main square and saw a sea of Villa Union Flags. We were everywhere. Lots of lads had been there for days and many had taken a detour to Amsterdam. It was mental and I feel lucky to have been of an age, 19, to have witnessed the best days of being a. Villa fan ever. Add Highbury the year before and I really am a lucky lad!
Sulberto21
Apparently the day we won the Euro cup I kicked a ball for the first time - mind you my dad wasn’t too happy I clocked him in the nut sack , I was 6 months old. Had already played for the U21's. A big what if had he stayed fit- would Lineker have played as many games? 1 1
Popular Post meregreen
Too many memories of that night to list here. But I do remember our group vowing not to get so pissed before the game that we wouldn’t remember it. Coaches arrived in convoys from Calais, we got there 7 hours before kick off. Armed Dutch Police were there in numbers down the side streets, but there was very little, if any, trouble. The Dutch wanted us to win, no love lost between them and the Germans. Sun was shining, Dutch beer was good, and we won, great times. Went back to Rotterdam with a few mates who had been there with me, in 2007 for the 25th anniversary. Took a tour of the stadium. Old Dutch guy saw us all in our retro 82 shirts, He told us to hang back as he would take us on the tour himself as he had also been there in 82. Fejenoord have switched their main stand to the opposite side now, so ordinarily you don’t get to stand on the steps where Dennis lifted the cup. He took us over to them though, and we all stood on the hallowed spot lifting an imaginary cup above our heads. It was a great trip back. Can’t believe it’s 40 years. We all agreed at the time that this could be our one and only chance to win this thing, so by hook and by crook we got there. Great memories UTV. TRO
Feels like yesterday...what a great trip....great memories. I remember getting the piss ripped out of me, for taking my pillow, on the Villa Coach. During the trip, particularly on the way back, could have rented it out......everybody wanted an hour on it. withes_shin
I was 11 at the time but vividly remember sitting in the living room with my dad (now sadly an HEITS) and watching the final on TV, and both of us jumping around like fools when the goal went in and again at the final whistle. One memory i do have, and time plays tricks on the memory, so I'm hoping someone can confirm this - but there was an advert after the game where Davenports congratulated the Villa on winning the European Cup.

MarkLillis
I was just beginning my love affair with football and Villa. I hadn’t attended a live match (Dad was unemployed which was not unusual in 1982) but watched anything I could on TV and played every chance I got. I was actually on a Coca Cola super skills(remember them?) class at my local park and the coach finished early so we could get back to watch that game. I don’t remember much about it tbf Nigel Spink coming on and doing a lap of the living room followed by a very strange press up type celebration in front of the tv when we scored before being told to settle down it’s only football! At the time I thought Villa winning stuff was normal…the naivety of youth eh. Edited May 19, 2022 by MarkLillis
Popular Post John
Like Corleone, I had a dream the day before the final, but I dreamt that we won 1-0 with a goal from Peter Withe on 66 minutes I was a minute out, but I managed to get a £2 bet on correct score/first scorer @ 22/1, that paid for my trip. Like meregreen we had tried to take it easy on the beer, but we didn't get anywhere near to succeeding. Plenty in the pub on the night before, where we posed with a Villa Union Jack before getting our taxis to New Street Station and then quite a few more before the game, before taking another taxi to the ground, to make kick-off. We took our places behind the goal and were ecstatic when we scored, but convinsed the digital clock at the other end of the ground had stopped or was running slow, as the final twenty odd minutes ticked down so painfully slowly! To be there when Dennis went up to lift the European Cup was unbelievable. I remember one of my mates (who was rather "tired & emotional") describing the trophy as being "as big as a man's chest" when we got back to the coach park, the Ferry captain thanking the Villa fans on the way back for our good behaviour and being applauded as our train went through each of the stations between Dover and Northampton, on the way back to Brum, by the waiting commuters. I have a photograph, that shows Spinksy making one of his many outstanding saves in front of us during the first half, that also shows a banner below us that reads, "1918, 1945, 1966 & now 82, it's just not your century". Such a brilliant day for those of us that were there, for those who were able to see it on television, or to listen to it on a radio and hopefully those of you that were not old enough to experience it, will get to see the club win the trophy again, in the not too distant future. Sulberto21
Watching the bt sports film the thing which stands out is the culture and mindset. if I was interviewed outside Villa Park for the pre season expectations for the forthcoming season and said that I want us to win the title if get laughed at. It’s all the manager, squad etc talked about the few years leading up to it. Fantastic mentality.

When the premier league started we were second behind Liverscum for trophies won. We were first for so long until their Vernon Pools sugar daddy came and helped them dominate. Didn't want to please or live up to anyone, just focused on his squad. Get many SAF vibes from him.
