Olympics Football 2021

Why do you think that football just does not care about Olympics? Surely it's not purely about money? Or is it?

Also, are there other examples of sport that put out poor/young players to complete instead of the elite?

It pretty much is. FIFA is the impediment because they want to ensure the Olympics doesn't rival the World Cup. They've ensured it's always an afterthought by implementing the age limit. The overlap with the continental tournaments in the same year doesn't help, either.

It'd take significant concessions from FIFA, UEFA, et al to allow the Olympic football contest to thrive, and it's not in their interests at all.

If olympic football was allowed to be like other football around the world we would have the same teams every time at the top, like we do now in the champions league. Not to mention what its like in other leagues around the world eg Holland,Spain,Scotland,Austria etc etc etc.

I see the Dutch women best Zambia 10-3 last night. Some of the football on show was atrocious from both sides judging by the ‘highlights’.

Olympic football should be scrapped!

I wonder how many times a player has scored a hattrick in a game their side has lost by seven goals? Can't be many.

Second time lucky there with VAR correcting their mistake from the first half with VAR awarding a pen in the 2nd half. Sure they have been told they messed up in the first half.

We should have had 2 penalties, one in each half IMHO

I think the Brazillian ref wanted the team wearing yellow shirts to win.

Australia Vs USA should be a really good game now.

Sweden would likely had won either way, played well under par especially defensively but have a better squad and more to bring on from the bench. Almost scored from the slowest shot of the tournament with that one that hit the bar. Would have been the ultimate women football goal that. Was like a feather drifting in the wind but the goalie still could no reach it.

A lot of people here dont like that GK,she makes too many mistakes.

Also that tall dark girl ( the one that plays in France should have come on a lot earlier ( or even started )

Group F in the women tournament was a bit uneven and wild. Holland scored 21 goals in 3 games but also managed to concede 8.

China and Zambia not doing anyone proud with their performances conceding 17 and 15 in 3 games.

Its a glorified youth  tournament with some long standing history. In its early years before the World Cup started it was considered the World Championship, certainly in South America which still treats it in much higher regard than Europe. Then a long period of amateurs not professionals playing and now this weird U23/some older players hybrid  which is done in the same summer as the Euros and Copa America.

As Jonathan Liew wrote the other day if football was scrapped in the Olympics would anyone actually comment on it? Exactly.

Shout out to the Zambian woman who scored a hat trick in each of their first two games, Barbra Banda. Plays in China, will be interesting to see if she gets a move out of her performances.

Aussies get Great Britain in the QFs. Think they'll be up against it.

She looked like a superstar in a team of absolute no-hopers. As you say, will be interesting to see where she goes next.
