Think many people rose tint dean smith just because he was a villa fan.

IMO he was bang average and was carried by grealish who was able to mask his lack of tactical depth.

When grealish didnt play we had no plan B.

Yet still probably the most successful Villa manager in the last 20 years though Unai should better this

Grealish thing is a cop out though, yes Smith indulged him but quite ignorant to say was all Grealish. Considering Mings, McGinn, Emi, Luiz, El Ghazi, Trezeguet, Hourihane, Konsa and a few more made vital contributions. After lockdown Grealish wasnt one of our better performers

I'd say Martin O'neil was more successful in the last 20 years. Dean Smith has a lower Win % than Steve Bruce.

It's not a cop out we were abysmal in the championship when grealish was injured he pretty much single handed got us to the play offs when he came back.

Admittedly in the prem season we bought watkins who scored 14 goals and el ghazi scored 10 so was less so but out play patterns were still get the ball to grealish at all costs.

Will always appreciate the job he did here, getting us out of the championship and establishing us in the premier league. But I always felt there was a ceiling on what he could achieve here and still maintain it was the right time for him to leave. Even if we got the first appointment wrong..

It's actually nice that he left while still being well thought of by the majority of the fan base too.

O'Leary achieved as much as O'Neill the ultimate opportunist charlatan. Playoff win was more than any manager has done this century. A dodgy corner probably cost us a trophy

We should strike off Pep's treble, was being carried by Haaland after all.

We all know trebles don't count unless all goals are shared equally between 11 players who were born within 2.75 miles of their hometown clubs!!!!!!!!

Yea, he was pretty dumb playing through Grealish, I mean, he's done nothing apart from win a treble with probably the best team in the world.  Fancy using him as a plan in the championship! 🥴🥴🥴🥴

I said we didnt have a plan b. Not that Grealish was not the correct plan a get a grip.

O'leary finished 6th once, then he finished 10th then 16th - completely laughable to compare him to Oneil's 3 6th place finishes and being robbed in the league cup final by the non vidic red card.

O' Leary spent about 30 million in 3 seasons while O'Neill had us on more than one occasions among Europe top spenders. Charlatan

He could be a candidate for the Ireland job if he is interested as I expect Kenny to be sacked soon

Don't think the FAI would be able to offer a financial package to tempt him. Ireland will be appointing some one on the cheap. Chris Houghton maybe.

Hughton is currently employed so doubt FAI will go for a compo manager. Ireland job be a better way into the job market than his last 2 jobs. Look at Steve Clarke, he probably will get a decent job after Scotland

Winning nothing is an achievement?

Getting into Europe is an achievement yes, getting to a cup final is also an achievement.

You say a dodgy corner cost us a trophy, so surely MON should be afforded the same grace with a non existent red

Exactly

If Smith still has passion for management then he needs to be particularly careful with his next job. He needs a chairman that will afford him 3 transfer windows minimum. I could see him hoping Carrick's awful start at Boro continues, he's certainly the type of manager I could see Steve Gibson appointing.

The standard of manager in the Championship is actually very good at the moment. Hypothetical but I can't see many sets of fans wanting a swap for Smith if offered.

Of the jobs probably coming up soon he should avoid Wednesday and QPR like the plague (unless he gets to build Wednesday next season in L1).
