Yeah, this is baffling, they know it was handball, but not sure whether it was inside or outside the box. Did they give a free kick or just played on?

I believe a goal kick? The ball went out and ref stopped for the check. VAR can't give a FK for that type of incident though

No solution is fool-proof though, is it? I think what we want is the power to be left to the on-field ref, unless it has been an egregious error. Let the on-field refs and linos make decisions they are confident on, and if they are not sure they can go to the monitor to verify. Only if an egregious error has been made should someone sat in a chair interfere, especially since a lot of what VAR is currently interfering with is subjective decisions with no consistency. And, most critically, let the on-field ref explain the decision at the time like they do in the NFL, NBA, etc.

But it think that's close to what fifa had at the world cup

They had a pitch team and a VAR team - key word being team, it was 5-7 people from memory and VAR specialists - they watched everything, when they see something they buzz down to the pitch ref and say you might want to take another look at that on the screen, the pitch ref can then say no I saw it perfectly or he can stop the game and go take a look, not sure on the communication but that should be easy to add

That set actually wasnt too bad

Just mentioned in the match thread, proof of VAR is running the game. Ref blows early for nunez foul before Gakpo scores, then game stops an we have to wait a minute or 2 for VAR to check it.

Ref made the call, play on, Webb keeps saying VAR are not there to Ref the games, but this is exactly what they are doing, continuing to undermine on pitch Refs.

What an absolute sh*tshow... They have goal-line technology to detect if the ball crosses the line, except that's only implemented for a partial part of the line (between the posts) and not for the entire line? Jesus wept

Well, the technology interacts with the ref by vibrating his watch. You don't want that happening when it narrowly goes out for a GK/Corner because you open up the possibility of a ghost goal being given.

The solution is probably just another camera directly above the goalline to call in/out for those marginal calls.

But the technology is based on Hawkeye, isn't it? How can they have Hawkeye for between the posts but not just outside the posts?

It's 7 cameras per goal so 14 in total

Id guess that if they wanted to do the whole byline it would be several more plus then then argument that if they do the byline why don't they do the whole pitch, itll come one day but not yet

It takes 7 dedicated high speed cameras all focused on the same 7m wide spot on the pitch between the goals.

I imagine it would be a pretty enormous expense to cover the whole width of the pitch in these cameras and they are hardly needed.

Yeah the answer is you challenge Hawkeye (or someone else...) to find a way to do it but the current technology doesn't allow them to do the whole pitch

It's 100% coming though, it's a no brainer

It's also surely not that regular an occurance? Funny that it's happened to arsenal twice in 6 months

Insane that it was given.

I wouldn't be confident at all from that angle that it's completely out.

As for the criticism of the AR, I have a lot of sympathy. We can't be sure from this angle. He's looking at it from the other side of the pitch, through a forest of players, plus potentially the goalposts too. I doubt he had a proper view of it to make a decision either way.

Just grabbed a shot from the highlights. I wouldn't envy being the AR in this position. He's got to make a decision on if it's 100% out or whether a sliver of the ball is still on the line, when it's moving, in the air, with 2 posts and 3 players in between him and the ball, from 30-40 yards away.

If we're expecting accuracy from this type of call, you're not getting it from one bloke on the other side of the pitch in real time.

On the other hand, VAR can draw "accurate" lines from toenails...why can't they draw a line from the edge of the ball? They already have a reference line (goal line).

Not clear and obvious, so couldn't call it out. Can't do anything more really, just wish they would use this for other calls, like toenail offsides and handballs.

Like I have said before, reference offsides, you can in no way call a offside from a toe being offside, as there is no clear evidence (as yet), when the ball was actually kicked to be crossed over. It would have to be called by the millisecond, instead you see just a blurred still of foot to ball.

Also alot to me seem to be really simple calls, but they seem to be so blindsided by the rules/laws so much, they seem to be brainwashed in using any common sense when making these calls.
