Ukraine war: Putin says no more massive strike - for now - BBC News

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said there is no need for more massive strikes on Ukraine, days after the heaviest bombardment of the country since the war began.

He said most designated targets of the strikes had been hit, adding that it was not his aim to destroy Ukraine.

Moscow's goal of mobilising 300,000 men would be met within two weeks, he said.

Mr Putin's words come as Russian forces seem stalled and Ukraine advances, almost eight months since the invasion.

Speaking to journalists after a summit with regional leaders in Kazakhstan's capital Astana, the Russian leader said that the recent strikes had destroyed 22 out of the 29 targets in Ukraine set by the military and that "they are getting" the remaining seven.

"There's no need for massive strikes. We now have other tasks," he said.

From Monday onwards, Russia unleashed a wave of strikes on cities across Ukraine, in what Mr Putin said was retaliation for a blast which damaged a key bridge between Russia and annexed Crimea.

Dozens of people were killed and injured in the strikes, which also damaged infrastructure. Central areas of Kyiv were targeted for the first time since the invasion.

But Mr Putin said it was not Russia's intention to destroy Ukraine, but he did not regret the invasion.

"What is happening today is not pleasant, to put things mildly," he said. "But all the same, [if Russia hadn't attacked] we would have been in the same situation, only the conditions would have been worse for us. So we're doing everything correctly and at the right time."

Looks like missiles are in short supply.

Is definitely the answer. But he's also saying the missiles also hit their intended targets which kind puts himself in the frame for yet  more warcrimes. I know it hardly makes any difference

Kids playground etc...Yep, through himself right in the mix, not that he gives a toss.

He's also saying 220k troops will be ready for deployment in the next 2 weeks. It's going to be interesting seeing how they settle into their new homes in the trenches with only tampons for first aid.

10,000 UK trained troops for Ukraine hit the front line soon.  As soldiers,  they are probably now,  4 or 5 times more effective than a mobilized 2 week trained gimpy orc from Russia.

Putin will go home before the 2 biggest Generals of all arrive anyway.

Spoiler

Both "General January" and "General February" have an impressive and consistent hit rate over the years.
Russians can't even fight in the summer FFS.

It's incredible how those tasked with rounding up conscripts are so overzealous with their behaviour. Especially when you just know they'd do anything to escape things like this themselves.

I despise pussies in authority that use it to punish those into doing that which they wouldn't.

He probably doesn’t even know the truth, his generals will have reported successes against military targets.

Interesting gossip on Twitter.
Several credible sources say the Ukraine has now taken just a tiny part of the Donetsk region which was taken from them in 2014.

So there's nothing standing in the way of control for them then.
