I'm probably only down a couple of hundred quid over my lifetime

Not specific to your goodself, it just reminded me of something. I'm always impressed with the number of people that do gamble that claim to be up on the deal or more or less even or earning a living from it. There are two of them in my office, both making a bit of extra money through gambling. Though saying that, I've been to the horses twice and I'm literally a couple of quid up, so who am I to talk.

But if even half these self assessments are accurate, I'm amazed the bookies are still in business, nevermind thriving with profit in the billions. Somebody somewhere must be losing. Certainly losing more than a couple of hundred over a lifetime.

My drive home passes a street full of every high street bookies. If any of the blokes in and out of them every day are making a profit, they ain't spending it on clothes.

(not a judgement on gambling, just on people's assessment of how they are doing at it, it strikes me they're as good at financial maths as I am at calorie counting)

Read somewhere that a handful of fruit machines will cover rent.

Remember a few years back fruities had to return 70p in the pound over x thousand spins.

It appears that's been ditched on the newer gamblers, there's no minimum! Though 'legacy machines' are still bound.

Depends what they do but pretty sure if you win 1000s on online the websites freeze your accounts (on a business decision) or limit your stakes to very small amounts.

I tried it for about 6 months when I left a job....nowhere near enough to have a comfortable living. You could possibly live on the breadline if you had a lucky few weeks, 300 quid a week is pretty much on a par with minimum wage when you take into account no tax but doing it week after week, month after month is blooming hard!

Now Fruit/quiz machine gambling...that is a different story.

pretty much this. guy on poker site used to work pretty high up in one of the major betting firms and says they would always ban accounts if it looks like they know what theyre doing. they dont need to give reasons for the ban

i pretty much just assume everyone is bullshitting if they say theyre winners at football sports betting. especially prem football. pretty sure its the most -ev sports betting there is.

and to the guy about self asssessments. peoples self assessments are HORRIBLY wrong. the amount of selective memory when it comes to gambling is pretty incredible. And the general public do not understand variance at all.  or they will claim to be winners because they bet once like £100 and won, but then lost a bunch of £1 bets but because theyre up $ wise, they think theyre "winning". when theyre not. bookies make a killing

variance is just so key.

97% of people lose money long term betting.

Of the 3% who win long term bookies put effort in to reducing the amount of money they can get on to reduce the size of those losses.

Simple solution to having accounts limited is to use Betfair, which you would expect serious gamblers to be doing anyway to be honest.

You can only get decent sized bets on closer to the start of races when there has been ample time for prices to settle on the true price. So your margins get squeezed tight if you try use betfair. You need to spread bets across non closers/ factored accounts or do walkers bets around 11am (bet in shops). Logistics is the tricky part to making pro or semi pro gambling pay.

Hi Snowy, yes I will be but mate you have to follow me on twitter. I always post a tweet to my jumpadviser selections so it's best way to follow my bets. I won Galway Plate and Kerry National already this season but I only tweeted the winning selections as season only gets going proper in Oct and sometimes I don't have time to do a write up on site.

Just as an update. For the 2 years from Sep 2014 my profit on turnover has been 29%. But that jumps to 61% if you exclude all bets of 5/1 or less. So I'm focussing on the bigger odds only bets now to cut out the losing ones. I'm hopeful of a very good season.

Over a lifetime I'm up for sure but that's only because I have been lucky to land some absolute monster accas at the football and racing festivals .

I won £17k as a 19 year old (1999) on a 15 team acca and there is no way on earth I have come close to giving that back to the bookies over the years . Since then I have had at least 14 different wins of over a grand too.

I don't win often, as I like big odds, but when I do win it's usually a nice one.

Ha Cheers Zak. I would be wary of getting carried away with those two great wins. Normally Nov is when the wins start racking up.

Iv been following your suggestion for over 2 years now i think. so just keep up the good work. Thought you might appreciate that it was going to a watch

Was a croupier for a few years. If you can set yourself a limit - and stick to it - then by all means spend your money however you want to.

Personally, I hate it. I worked with people who would be dealing for 10-12 hours, and then after work they'd go to a different casino and gamble their just-earned wages away. Some people live and breathe the lifestyle but I absolutely hated it. Don't miss it a single bit and I've never looked back.
