Chindie Posted February 1, 2018 VT Supporter Share Posted February 1, 2018 (edited) At the risk of bringing up 'planes won't fly', here comes a lovely new thing for post Brexit Britain (shamelessly stolen from elsewhere, Twitter etc. Britain has loads of lorries that go to Europe. We have over 70,000 hauliers(?) apparently. And those lorries can travel inside the EU because they have permits to do so as members. Apparently, we realised that, in a hard Brexit scenario, wouldn't have those permits. We'd probably get just over a thousand. Whoops. This has caused some problems. Firstly the Brexiteers think this is a bad analysis so obviously don't want to accept it because it makes No Deal look Truly Shit (nasty civil servant traitors etc etc). Secondly, to get around this kind of thing, we need to legislate for it. The problem with that is it would be literally planning for no deal... And the government is worried that a. this would 'undermine negotiations' (despite, again, the EU knowing about all these issues), and b. also don't really want to waste time dealing with it because they think they'll get a deal... But what if we don't? The bill for this is the Road Haulage Bill, and it was due to be put forward in Jan, but the government has more or less sidelined it and is telling everyone to ignore it. Given that this kind of thing would come up again and again on a no deal situation, you'd think we'd have done some work. But no... Xann
Quote In a recent private meeting between May and the German chancellor, Angela Merkel, the two leaders reportedly found themselves in a tragicomic conversational loop. May kept telling Merkel: “Make me an offer.” To which Merkel would reply: “But you’re leaving – we don’t have to make you an offer. Come on, what do you want?” To which May would retort: “Make me an offer.” A change of leader won’t make this right. Lacking authority and coherence, haemorrhaging relevance and credibility, May is a faithful reflection not only of her government but of the country at this moment. Brexiteers have ostensibly got what they want: Brexit. They assumed we could dictate the terms; we can’t. They assumed we could just walk away; we can’t. They had no more plans for leaving than a dog chasing a car has to drive it. They are now finding out how little sovereignty means for a country the size of Britain in a neoliberal globalised economy beyond blue passports (which we could have had anyway). What we need isn’t a change of leader but a change of direction. Grauniad - Gary Younge

chrisp65
I got truly angry and depressed earlier, listening to 'any answers' on R4. A bloke had rung in to say that once we were out of the EU we would be free to make our own trade deals with countries like.....Sweden, and car companies like.....Volvo. Prior to that they'd been discussing whether 16 and 17 year olds should be allowed the vote and the consensus was that they probably weren't old enough and wise enough. Next up, Fifty year old brexit bloke rings in thinking Volvo cars is Swedish and Sweden isn't in the EU. It was just too sad to even bother shouting at the radio. Davkaus
I think more than the nationality of the owners comes in to the nationality of the company. Decades of history, doesn't necessarily get thrown away because someone buys them. I wouldn't say Villa isn't English, for example.
LondonLax
The headquarters are still in Sweden, as is the research and development and testing center and the main production factory. I'm not really sure what it all means for Brexit trade deals though.
chrisp65
Volvo's are currently made in: Torslanda, Sweden Ghent, Belgium Shah Alam, Malaysia Chengdu, China Daqing, China new manufacturing and production plants currently under construction in: Luqiao, China Chengdu (2nd site), China Berkley, USA No V40's, V60's or S series cars are made in Sweden. If you buy a range topping XC90 in the USA, it was made in China. Volvo do have a very good marketing department.
Davkaus
They've been making cars in Malaysia and Belgium since the 60s. Is that when they stopped being Swedish? Or is it when they got bought by an American company? Edited February 3, 2018 by Davkaus
