Paul Lambert

Twice I've sensed the crowd were ready to properly turn at villa park.

2-0 down to west brom and today.

I think Lambert's come very close to losing the home support but he's got the results when its right on the brink.

It was on a knife edge today at 0-1, boos had started etc

I agree with Rob182. I don't think the home crowd helps a lot of the time. It was starting to get really poisonous after that Norwich goal. As has already been said, there were audible moans whenever we weren't getting the ball forward immediately yet whenever we made any mistakes as a result of rushing things there were even more groans. I don't think it's fair to expect people to be chanting for 90 minutes but at least not constantly groaning and booing so early in the game would be nice. A flat atmosphere is always better than the kind of hostile atmosphere we witnessed in the first 20 minutes or so today IMO.

For the record, I'm not blaming the fans for the shit in the first 20 minutes at all, I just think there needs to be a bit more calm and patience sometimes.

I would agree with the calls for calm but it is not only at Villa Park that this happens. It happens all over the country, even at the top teams when things are not going well.

Just read through this thread. Plenty of people saying "15 minutes doesn't forgive all" or "Team is still shit for most of the game" or "Still going to get relegated"

Take no notice. Those people lost today.

Lambert and his cronies abusing villa fans ! Sorry that's not acceptable on any level

See... It's not that cut and dried for me. For the manager to react like that the "fan" must have been some kind of uber prick.

To some people managers and players are always in the wrong in every situation with fans and aren't allowed to have natural human emotions and reactions regardless of what the fans do because they're paid well. It's crazy.

Not sure that means that they haven't enjoyed the win (there's something a bit sinister behind that kind of accusation, btw) but rather that they don't think the win overshadows x, y, z or abc? Edited by snowychap

It probably doesn't help but then after 2 and a half years of abysmal football and results at home I'm afraid we've reached that point where fans are going to find it hard to hide their emotions.

As soon as the team showed something the fans were right behind them.

There's nothing that sinister about it. This forum is barely readable with the constant undertone of negativity and pessimism.

Shame that it doesn't go away even when there's a win.

There is - there's the implicit accusation that other fans (because they don't specifically share your viewpoint about the club/the team/the performance and so on) begrudge us a victory (as it supposedly doesn't suit their viewpoint).

It's a better fan argument and, unfortunately, it is commonplace.

Yes but on the flip-side, that is a bit like expecting the fans of a team doing well and on a good run to suddenly shelve their positivity and optimism because of one defeat.

Difference being it should be enjoyable when your team wins as opposed to it already sucks when your team loses.

So when we win, the sentiment is, "Well, we won, BUT xyz sucks sucks sucks."

I'm just saying it wouldn't hurt to just let it go and enjoy the win for a day or two instead of already coming up with the negatives.

But with this I bow out of this thread. I've avoided it for a while as it usually runs in circles and I see things haven't changed :)

I don't know if this has been posted but following our third goal, Lambert celebrated and then immediately turned to a Villa fan behind the Norwich dugout who I assume had been giving him grief.

Lambert was gesticulating that he wanted a word and shouting at this bloke who then came rushing down the front row to the edge of the Villa dugout and was pounced on by a few fans and security. Lambert took his coat off as if he was going to go toe to toe for a scrap and was going crazy. The "fan" was escorted away by a couple of security fans and I assume thrown out. If you have video'd the game, watch how lambert snaps round and looks at someone behind the dugout after the goal and a moment later you will see him without his coat, despite the fact that it was pissing down.

Whilst that is a bit disappointing to read, I think the highlighted bit is telling somewhat, why would other fans try restrain him if they thought what he was shouting wasn't unnecessary and too far? Maybe they didn't want the fan to have an argument with the manager, but if they agreed, why intervene? I can only assume what the fan was saying was more than the conventional "You don't know what you're doing" and bordering more on unnecessary and uncalled for abuse.

As has been said, it doesn't seem that cut and dry, I can only assume that the fan had gone too far with his "concerns". And just to clarify, I'm not doubting what you've said, just without knowledge of what the fan actually said, it is a bit harder to judge the incident, at least for those of us who didn't see it.

Lambert may be getting paid a lot to do the job, and it's the sort of thing that unfortunately is part and parcel of football management, but he is still human, so I don't begrudge him too much for getting heated with a fan if what the fan was saying was too far.

Is that not an admission that your only reaction to the overall performance of the club (and your necessary criticism of other fans) is based upon the immediate result? I.e. whether or not we won today or yesterday (not even how it happened)?

Edit: Didn't you suggest, prior to the game, that:

Unless it's a completely different lineup than the norm, I don't expect much.

The front three have been figured out. The midfield still lack clear roles. The defense always has a spanner in them.

Another miserable home game.

I couldn't give a monkeys how 'far' the fan had gone (as long as he wasn't being personal about Lambert or his family beyond a level that would push people normally to provocation). If Lambert is threatening to fight someone from the crowd (such that he's disrobing and calling someone out) then he is on thin ice.

O'Neill crossed the line when he started getting gobby about the fans and the reactions he didn't like. This would be just as bad.
