Hard to describe without drawing diagrams, but... 

 

The full-size side and back panels are screwed (countersunk) to the walls. Fill the screw holes, sand down and paint. 

 

Shelves sit on the top, forming a sort of open-fronted box. Then build another one on top of that, and so on.

Yep, I made shelves that look like a dresser - the whole thing was built to the wife's specification. The cupboards are handy for storing DVDs. There's a matching unit on the other side of the chimney breast. 

 

They're her plates, I don't do that shit. The books and CDs are mine.
