2014 Holiday Plans

So, I'm going to take the gf to Florence next year, and I am fairly certain I am going to propose. Both going to be 26 by the time we go and just bought a new house - thinking it's time!

I'm a little stuck though, how the fudge do I get from Pisa Airport to Florence?? I would ideally like to avoid the train cuz I'm certain we will end up in Rome or something... Also, any recommendations on places to go whilst there??

Your in the wrong thread fella this is holiday plans 2014 not 2015!! :-)

How else you gonna get there other then train?? No offense but if you concerned with getting on the wrong train in another country your best staying at home. Seat 61 is by far the best website for planning european train travel

Haha, yes, but I'm making the plans in 2014, going in 2015? The title of the thread is a little ambiguous... ;)

Just never really done it before, would normally just get private transfer or transfers would be included as part of a Thompson package or something along those lines...

Consider hiring a car ?

Only reason is if you are in Pisa you may as well go see the leaning tower ... Not sure how close Pisa airport is to the city centre and Florence etc ...

Also if you have a car (and the time ) you could drive to some nice beaches or even San Marino which is only 60 miles away ( it's quite a nice place and worth a visit ( and another new country :) )

Some parts of Florence town centre are deemed a car free zone but if you stay at a hotel there then you are allowed a car you just have to register it at the hotel ( I was still getting court summons from Florence about 3 years after I went , I just binned them but its hassle you can do without , so make sure the hotel register you , mine clearly didn't. !! )

Florence is stunning .... For your proposal you may find the Ponte Vecchio bridge is a little bit crowded and the Duomo cathedral will be as well ... Consider Boboli Gardens as it offers a nice view over the city

Tour suggestion is take the walking tour as you see some off the beaten track stuff as well as the main stuff ... The walking your lady may even be able to arrange it for you at one of the smaller churches you will stop off at

A friend of mine has just got back from Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, he couldn't recommend them enough.

Did he go on his own or escorted around with a guide ... I think its Turkmenistan that is a bit of a dictatorship and rumoured to be a bit corrupt and tricky for tourists ??

I've heard the former Turkmenistan leader had even more of a cult of personality than the Jong Il's.  The current regime are trying to uninstall it a bit.  Apparently it's a good/interesting place to visit.

Just back from my holiday.

Bremen was really nice but a little on the small side but had a great night out.

Groningen was surprisingly brilliant.

Amsterdam was as good as I expected, so much fun there.

One last thing, Dutch women

Has anyone heard of The Yacht Week? I'm in Hvar at the moment and there were so many rocket polishing removed words Australians about last night, all on 'The Yacht Week'. I've just checked out their itinerary online though and luckily I think they've moved on now so a night out may be more enjoyable tonight!

This island is beautiful by the way, highly recommend it.

Yeah they were all there last year, loads of Americans too. Proper expensive from what I remember some of them telling me. Hvar was okay for me - the way they just switch the music off at 2am and it's either go home or pay £25 into Carpe Diem is pretty shitty tbh.

I preferred Split over Hvar, a lot more to do.

Hvar has always been on the 'to do' list... although I need to get rid of my pot belly if i want to mix with the beautiful people there though!  :)

The daughter of the man who owns our apartment told us a few more places to go other than Carpe Diem, including a place up in the hills which opened a couple of weeks ago, may try it out tonight. As it's just me and the other half we aren't too bothered about staying out til sunrise though. Off to Kiva tonight. Thinking about hiring a boat tomorrow, depends on cost though. We go to Split on Tuesday, anywhere you'd recommend?

We got a boat out when we were on Hvar too and I definitely recommend that. It was £60 for about 7 hours between four of us I think.

There's like a main row of bars right in the harbour area which was definitely the place to go for the night and the bar on the very corner was very good but can't recall the name. The day we arrived we beat Arsenal at the Emirates 3-1 in a bar that was full of Gooners so we were all hammered by about 7 and I can't remember anything after that haha.

Booked 4 nights in Istanbul for October. Wanted to go Marakech for the simple fact it was a new country and continent to tick off but with the reported ebola thing spreading across africa, although im sure its over exaggerated, dont want to take no chances.

Went to France, drove from Brittany across to Belgium border by Dunkirk. Hated it, hated France, the people mainly. Rude, arrogant and unfriendly, 10 days of bad. Got back and booked a week in Rhodes. Thats better.

I liked Washington , I'm sure you'll already know the well known landmarks to aim for but I thought the Pentagon memorial was worth a visit as was Arlington and the Smithsonian ( if you like planes ) but its way back near the airport and a dog to get to on public transport

If you like the civil war stuff then they run a day trip to Gettysberg via buses that you catch at the main railway station...

Luckily the hop on hop off bus will take you to most of the places you'll want to see

The Air and Space museum (Both) are very high on my list. Waiting for confirmation of a booking on the Pentagon tour. Will more than likely do Arlington if we have time. I have been told you can get lost for time in there. Got tickets for Baseball and NFL games sorted. Washington seems to me to be the sort of place that you can just wander around all day just taking in the history and sheer influence of what goes on there. Hadn't considered Gettysberg. Might have a look into that now

I used viator to book my Gettysberg trip ... I've used them a few times in lots of countries and they are pretty good and your money is safe if you use them ... They have some good trips on their page or ideas even if you don't use them

Yeah you could spend a while in Arlington , for me it was the Kennedy graves and the changing of the guard ceremony I wanted to see but walking around the graves seeing a fallen 19 year old is always humbling as well

Didn't know they did tours inside the pentagon ? We just did outside when we went which is mainly the memorial garden

The air and space is basically a shuttle bus ride from the airport ... So any cheap transport to the airport will put you close

I did baseball in Atlanta and NFL in Orleans .. Wasn't really a fan of either sport but the Saints game was surprisingly good and enjoyable and I sort of follow them now and watch them on TV now and again ... Baseball was good fun but at 900 games a season I don't really follow it though i do checkout how the braves are getting on every once in a while ...

The Pentagon tour lasts around 90 mins I believe. I'm not sure exactly what you are allowed to see but I reckon it will be interesting anyway. Reviews says the guides are good and engaging and give a lot of interesting info. You have to apply between 14-90 days before you want to go and are subject to security clearing, which is what I am waiting for now,

Apparently there is a bookable shuttle bus between the two Air and Space museums but it might be easier to do that than try to get to the one close to the airport another time. Will mean pretty much the whole day is taken up with looking at aircraft though. But I don't mind that!!

This will be my 6th baseball game and 2nd NFL. I do love both sports though so it's a must do thing for me. The Braves are the visitors in the game I am going to. This will be the wife's first NFL game live though. So that should be fun!

Thinking about getting away somewhere where it's still warm in November, maybe Tenerife.  Don't want to be spending much more than £300 for flights and hotel though.

Keep an eye on this then, always some ridiculously cheap deals especially around the later part of the year http://www.hotukdeals.com/travel/deals/hot
