The marquee matchup will be New England-Denver on Sunday night. Denver with all the momentum, but the Pats might just play with a bit of a chip on their shoulder after the dodgy call vs Carolina.

Of course it's Brady vs Peyton as well. Strange that they're both old timers now. Where does the time go?

Playoff scenarios

Broncos

Clinch playoff berth this week with win, Chargers loss/tie, Steelers/Browns tie, Raiders/Titans tie, and either:

* Ravens/Jets tie

* Ravens loss and Dolphins loss/tie

Chiefs

Clinch playoff berth this week with win, Steelers/Browns tie, Raiders/Titans tie, and either:

* Ravens/Jets tie

* Ravens loss and Dolphins loss/tie

* Ravens loss and Patriots loss

Colts

Clinch AFC South title with wins over the next two weeks @ Cardinals and vs. Titans

Seahawks

Clinch NFC West title with wins vs. Saints and @ 49ers

Clinch 1st round bye with wins vs. Saints and @ 49ers, any loss/tie by Lions

Clinch home field with wins vs. Saints and @ 49ers, any loss/tie by Lions, and the Saints post at least one loss and no wins in their upcoming games against the Falcons and Panthers

Discussion

The Chiefs' Ravens/Patriots scenario arises because, without the Dolphins loss/tie, the only way the Jets finish ahead of the Chiefs for the wildcard is by winning the division (i.e. the Jets cannot beat out the Chiefs for the wildcard). The Patriots must lose to Dolphins and Bills to get to 3-3 in the AFC East (which is the best possible division record for the Jets); if the Patriots lose to Broncos this weekend, the Patriots would have to beat Texans, Browns, and Ravens, which would negate the Jets' common opponent advantage. Patriots would thus beat the Jets in a two-way tie for the AFCE title (the Dolphins would drop out on AFC record), and the Chiefs would assuredly finish ahead of the Jets in any wildcard battle.

Seahawks need the Lions loss/tie to avoid getting beaten on NFC record and to prevent the Lions from joining a three-way tie with the Seahawks and either the Saints or Panthers, which could eliminate Seahawk wins over the Saints or Panthers from consideration. That the Saints and Panthers have 2 games against each other still to play likely helps the Seahawks.

(Our next guest columnist is the King James Bible)

(1) And Belichick did sayeth before the Belichickites: "Send forth Ty Law that he may throw a blanket upon Marvin Harrison, thus covering him up." And Law did as Belichick told, and thrice did he intercept Peyton Manning, whilst Adam Vinatieri kicked field goal upon field goal, five field goals in all. (2) And thus the Belichickites entered again the Promised Land, where they laid waste upon the Delhommites.

(3) But in time disfavor fell upon the Belichickites. They did battle against the Manningites in which two offensive linemen did crosseth the plane of the goal line for fumble recovery touchdowns, which is an abomination. (4) Belichick's heart grew stubborn, and he turned his back upon righteousness. "See how I merely stretch my arms on fourth-and-2, and Kevin Faulk dost converteth?" Belichick told his people. (5) But Faulk did not converteth, and the Belichickites were defeated by the Manningites.

(6) It was then that the king of the Manningites, Irsaychadnezzer, grew jealous of his people's greatest champion, and Peyton was thus banished to live amongst the mountain people. (7) When Belichick heard this, he waged battle with Peyton and the mountain people, and did so humbly, and did rout them with 35 first downs, and Stevan Ridley did rush forth for 151 yards. (8) And lo, the Belichickians did continue to battle back and forth with these new Manningites. The battles still go on today.

(9) Now it happened that whenever the Belichickians became too stubborn and vainglorious, they did meet the kin of Peyton, a young man named Elisha...

(Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) spent her entire life in Amherst, Massachusetts as a near-recluse who never left her parents' house, making her uniquely suited to write about the Patriots.)

I saw Wes Welker clutch his skull -

Yet secretly rejoice --

He'd rather stay at home instead

Of hearing all this noise.

The sermons we are weekly told -

The folly of our quarrels

Unnoticed as a Kuechly hold -

Unused as Jamaal Charles.

Such foolishness! The toiling hands

That turn the conference winch -

Shall be buried in the meadow's lands -

By a plow called Marshawn Lynch

Part V of Irrational Brady-Manning Arguments

I thought I'd summed this up successfully back in one of the earlier versions, but for those of you who weren't paying attention:

Except for those aspects of the game in which Brady is better than Manning, Manning is superior to Brady.

How dare you say that! It's obvious that except those aspects of the game in which Manning is better than Brady, Brady is superior to Manning.
