  1. I don't know why, but I'm wildy optimistic about this game. I think we will pick up a 2-1 win. Spurs right side can be got at by Targett and Grealish.
  2. I think if we stay up we need to look at evolution rather than revolution. For whatever people want to say about our current squad, at the start of next season the players will have had a year of playing together, and it's not uncommon for players that are new to the league to have a better second season. For that reason I think signing 7 or 8 players we'd expect to be regular starters would be more disruptive than beneficial. If we secure Premier League safety we should shed some of the players who don't really add to the team (Lansbury, Jota, Taylor etc) and just look to sign a couple of squad players, along with 3 or 4 quality first teamers. For me I'd like to see us spend the tv money on a new creative wide player, preferably with pace, another energetic centre mid to compliment McGinn (and be an option if McGinn is injured so we don't have to change formation) and a top centre back. Then bring in another forward and left back as competition for the first choice players. With another year of tv money I don't see any reason why we couldn't afford to spend sizeable amounts of money on the squad, and if we spent similar to last summer but on less players, we can hopefully improve the quality of the starting line up. Also it would hopefully mean Grealish stays as well!
  3. I agree with all you've said except the lack of desire. I think he has that desire, but I think this league is just too quick for him. I actually think he wants to get stuck in, but a combination of positional awareness and a lack of reading the speed of the game means he's rarely capable of getting himself in to the position to get stuck in.
  4. As much as I love some people's optimism, you're kidding yourself if you think Grealish will stay at Villa if we are relegated. That's not to say he would gleefully skip out the door, but he has given this club everything, and he deserves the opportunity to play to a higher standard. I hope that's with us, I hope we stay up, improve the quality of the squad in the summer, and move forward with him. If we don't stay up though, he will go with my blessing because he has been nothing short of world class for us the last couple of seasons.
  5. McGinn hasn't played in the side since switching to this formation, so I think dismissing the possibility he could add to the team is naive. He could be a revelation in there. Equally it could fall apart. We just don't know.
  6. There's nothing to say you can't have a more attack minded player in that central 2. You would still have 6 defensive players with the wing backs, centre backs and CDM.
  7. If all our CM's are fit and in form he'd still be the first name in the centre of the park for me. I actually think his energy playing as one of the central two would give the formation an added dimension.
  8. The fact he's deleted the tweet says to me he's heard something. Whether it comes off or not only time will tell.
  9. I think today will end up being relatively quiet in terms of incomings. I think if anything does happen it will be tomorrow when clubs start to blink, panic, and allow deals to go through. I hope I'm wrong but I foresee a day of pressing refresh in the office for no reason.
  10. I think that was Bruce. Smith has played him at centre back but that was before he brought Hause and Mings in, and recalled Elphick. Once he had actual centre backs Bree didn't get a look in there. I think he has been playing right side of a back three out on loan though.
  11. Yeah if we are going to persist with a back three letting Chester go without a replacement would be odd, having 4 centre backs to cover the three spots is risky.
  12. The story about that even references that we are freeing up wages in preperation to bring another in. I'd be amazed if we don't sign at least one player this week.
  13. Decent performance from 'the worst keeper ever to play for Villa'
  14. I feel like no-one remembers that Stuart Taylor and Stefan Postma played for us when they're having this conversation. Nyland isn't a keeper I particularly rate, but he's definitely not the worst I've seen between the sticks for us.
  15. To be fair there's probably names on that list that currently aren't available, but so many things change in football that doesn't mean they won't be available before the end of deadline day. I wouldn't be overly concerned they have a list, it just means we are looking at all eventualities, and it leaves us more likely to get someone through the door. If you focus too much on one player and it doesn't come off, you can be left short and red faced, which by all acounts is what happened in the summer.
  16. Any of you want to talk about transfer rumours for this month? That thread has become the Neil Taylor thread so I assumed this was where to come to discuss potential signings...
  17. The fact he needs to be playing regularly is what makes me question why it's such a nailed on notion in everyone's head that he will go to Inter. Would he realistically play often enough there? Not unless they're planning on offloadinhg some players.
  18. I agree with this, I'd love to see him stay if he keeps this form up, but his interviews have made it sound very much like he has no intention of joining us permanently, just that he's here for 4 months before he returns to AC. I'd love to be wrong about that though!
