  1. Yeah this is the model the clubs that already have a larger revenue model than us imploy, and it's a great supplementary income. I get that people might not like seeing youth players sold, fans always seem to have an affinity with the players who've come through our ranks, but lets be realistic. How many of these players that we're selling would realistically be of the quality to play regularly for a top 6 team, which is where we are intending to be? Sure Archer and Philogene would have been on the bench and played a fair few games depending on how we get on in europe, but not enough to develop in to reliable week in top level Premier League players. These deals are best for both parties. Realistically what are the odds Philogene, Archer and Ramsey all develop in to the level of player we'd need? I mean one might at a push, but the odds of all htree doing it is very low. This means we have more wiggle room to sign aonther first team ready player, and if any do reach the level we want we can always re sign them.
  2. So an upgrade on Digne in pretty much every way and another strong option to add diversity of tactics to the squad.
  3. Yeah I think Acuna would be an upgrade on him and he's clearly still behind Moreno when he's fit, but he's certainly not been shite when he's played. But that's social media and football on the internet. You're either the best player in the team, or an utter talentless hack that needs to leave. There is no inbetween.
  4. Tim doesn't count as homegrown for us, he's still a West Brom academy graduate as it stands as as he's not been trained by our club for 3 years
  5. That's probably the going rate for a loan tbh
  6. I think we've been banned from transferring players between us and Vitoria until 2024, but I'm unsure if that applies to loan deals.
  7. He is decent, but for the money he would cost there is far better value and players elsewhere
  8. Probably a combination of the two in all honesty. I think he'd fit in very well in Emery's system to be fair, but I can't see this move happening. But we've such a good manager now that we should have faith in whoever he chooses to bring in. The way he's transformed the existing squad and got Moreno playing means it really doesn't matter who we're linked with, as long as we sign players Emery wants to work with then the futures bright.
  9. I believe he said the aim was to be self sufficient, but that doesn't mean that we can't ever splash the cash. I'd imagine NSWE wanted the self sufficient Villa to be a solid outfit constanly challenging for Europe so they could essentially leave it to govern itself. We're a million miles from that currently and are slipping backwards rapidly, so I wouldn't at all be surprised to see them back a new manager heavily, with the ultimate aim still being to get the club to a solid base and then leave it to run itself financially. They proabbly can't afford to not back us when relegation is a very real possibility, as the cost of that would be a lot more than them financing another managers signings. Ultimately we won't know until Gerrard is gone and a new manager comes in, but I don't think any of the managers we've been linked with in that Telegraph article would come with where we are if they weren't promised significant backing. If there's no real money for trasnfers then either that article is BS, or our management structure are completely deluded. That's not impossible, but also not likely.
  10. Maybe they have, maybe they haven't. That's pure guess work. Just because we didn't spend £100 million doesn't mean we can't.
  11. I think the risk of him jumping ship shouldn't count at all. If he were to join and then jump ship it'd be presumably not only because he's got 'a better offer' but also that he's done well with us whilst here. It'd mean even if he were leaving he'd be leaving with us in a better place and as a more attractive prospect to any other high calibre managers. If there's any possibility of getting him, we'd be cutting our nose off to spite outr face if we didn't try to bring him in.
  12. He'd also only have to do a quick google of us to realise we have a new set of incredibly wealthy and driven owners now as well that would presumably back him to a huge amount if he came. Our history has no relevance on attracting a manager like Poch, he'll only be looking at the offer on the table and the assurances he would have on where the club want to be and how they'd back him to achieve it.
  13. I feel similar, but I really don't think we will have to wait too much longer. It looks like he's limped enough to get the Chelsea game, but I really think that could be the end of him. After all, the away fans have turned and they're usually the last to call for a managers head. Sunday at home could be toxic, a tough and uncomfortable watch. But it could also be the siren that's so loud the owners just can't pretend they haven't heard it.
  14. They were ruthless with Smith so fingers crossed
  15. It wouldn't cost as much as relegation
  16. Yeah I mean ultimately we all want the same thing, which is a successful club. And I think the majority of fans want Gerrard to be the man to lead the club too, as he's already here. I think it's just that some think he's culpable for all of our shortcomings, some think it's nothing to do with him, and the truth will ultimately lie somewhere in that grey area in between. I think you speak a lot of sense about the players having to take responsibility, for not doing the right things on the pitch. Ultimately, regardless of what their coaches tell them to do, they're still highly paid athletes with the ability to make their own minds up on what to do in each moment on the pitch. I think the bit I struggle with is that whilst there are clearly issues with the quality of some of the players, which is something no manager can accept sole responsibility for, the thing I blame Gerrard for is how he elects to utilise those players. I think most people can see how unbalanced our midfield is, especially if he's using both Rasmey and McGinn in there, and whilst it's not his fault that those two together can't form a cohesive midfield, he's had long enough as a manager, and has enough options in the squad, to change that. Whether that's a formation change or switching up personnel, there are things he can at least try. The fact that he won't is why I can't see him being a successful manager for us. He seems far too headstrong on issues like these, and that's why some fans, such as myself, identify formations as an issue. He seems incapable of identifying a system that plays to his squads strengths, which is fine when you've first taken over a job, but after this amount of time I think the lack of any tangible change in our play paints a more alarming picture. I hope he turns it around, and I hope we batter Forest tonight to get back on track, but the longer the performances continue in their current vein, the more I feel like regardless of how good or bad our players are as individuals, a different manager could get much more out of them.
  17. I don't disagree with any of this, but Gerrard has had 11 months, a full pre season and 2 transfer windows to imprint his 'identity' on the team. Do you think it's too early to criticise if it seems pretty clear it's not working? I ask that as a genuine question btw, as I know text can come across unnecessarily aggy
  18. Whoever said this is wise beyond their years.
  19. Deano played around with a few formations to be fair. We were 4-3-3 for a majority of his time, but he did switch to a back 3 when we were really struggling. Also the season he did play 4-2-3-1 actually turned out to be our best season, finishing 11th. It fell apart a bit at the end, but I think that was down to the fact it relied on Grealish and Barkely both being ball carriers in the three behind Watkins, and when both were unavailable and Barley lost his form the system fell apart a bit. I think what frustrates me is when managers down't play to their players strengths, and formations are a key component of that in the modern game. You need to be adaptable, but you also need to recognise youer squads strengths and weaknesses, which is something Gerrard doesn't seem very adept at as it stands.
