    This is pathetic. Serious questions need to be asked of the management, the coaching staff, the recruitment team and the owners for allowing us to get here. I can take getting a hiding from one of the best teams in the league. It hurts but class shows through. What is unacceptable though is to not even try. The performance is utterly inept and how we have ended up with no striker is criminal for all involved.

    I think it would be harsh for Reina to go in to the first team considering Nyland has done really well in all his appearances this season. That said, I'd still sign Reina as he's reportedly not going to cost a transfer fee, and we are a Nyland injury away from Kalinic starting! Bring Reina in as competition and sell Kalinic for whatever we can get for him.

    Rodriguez has always struck me as one of THOSE players. The kind of player who you hate every time you see them play, and especially when they play against your team, but if they're in your team you absolutely love them. He's not the greatest but he's a real worker, can play wide, and is easily a better option than Hogan, Kodjia and Davis. If he were to come in as first choice this window I'd question it, but as the versatile rotational option to a first choice striker I think he'd actually do very well for us.

    Yeah I thought this, it's not like the regular click bait rumours, and it didn't originate from our press either, similar to many of the players we went after in the summer. Maybe we were never in for him, but the level of detail makes me think we must be ambitiously targetting someone. Fingers crossed anyway, it'd be a real downer now to go from this to signing someone like Assombalonga

    We can have 2 players on loan as a Premier League Club, but both can't be loaned to us from the same team. So if Drinkwater signs on a loan, Giroud or Batshuayi can't then join us on loan.

    Drinkwater might not be the most inspiring signing, but frankly he's an upgrade on most of our central midfielders. Just think of how much football Lansbury has played recently, someone like Drinkwater would be a much better option. Let's just hope the majority of the budget is being saved for strikers.

    A voice of reason! I'm not inspired by Drinkwater but if the management deem him as good enough to step in to the team, is £2 million in wages worth it for potentially staying in the league? Seems a no brainer.

    I think Nyland has shown more than enough in his limited game time this season to persuade Smith that he deserves a chance. As many people have pointed out, whats the point of having a squad if you don't utilise it in situations like this. I agree he was terrible last season, but let's not forget that he was thrust in to a side in complete disarray, and spent the majority of his time behind an injured Chester and a 34 year old midfielder at centre back. There was no confidence anywhere in our back 5 and he was always on to a hiding. Also when Cutler came in last season there was a noticeable improvement in Nyland, especially in the last two or three games before his injury, when he was making penalty saves and asking serious questions about why Kalinic was coming in. I think now he's fully recovered, settled in, has worked with Cutler for over a year, and will be playing behind the likes of Mings, he could prove a reliable option, at least until Steer is back. Even if Nyland does blow this opportunity, we've got an entire month to look for another keeper, there are more pressing concerns right now, such as the striker situation.

    No idea at all if it's a genuine link, the club usually plays stuff close to their chest, but there were a few outlets that reported some of our summer signings prior to any significant developments so it's not beyond doubt. For what it's worth though I think Batshuayi would be a good signing, especially on loan. He'd fit in to our system, and despite being on loan he'd have a point to prove with the Euros coming in the summer, he will want to be in that Belgian squad, so we'd be getting a player that is already motivated to hit the ground running. He also offers something different to Wesley, which when both were fit would only be a good thing.

    I would imagine the mutual termination of BB's contract wouldn't have cost us anything. He hasn't looked happy, he's 7th choice centre mid and when he couldn't get a loan or a fee he probably just said 'tear my contract up so I can leave'

    I must admit I'm surprised we've let Hogan and Green leave without at least one player coming in that can play in their positions. That's not to say Hogan or Green would have played much, but it's the only area our squad looks light on numbers. Besides that it's been an excellent window and we need to trust that Smith can get the best out of this squad to ensure we do well this season.

    To be honest I think the squad we are assembling will be expected by the board to do more than just narrowly avoid relegation. There's a lot of variables regarding injuries, form, how the team gels etc. However, whilst I would be happy with 17th or better I actually think we could surprise a few people this season. Let's be optimistic for a change, I know that can be tough for Villa fans, but times are changing...

    I think with Nakamba coming in as well Hourihane will be the player to come in if McGinn or Grealish are unavailable.

    People have said he's played more at CM than DM, but in his interview he's said he likes bringing the ball out from the back and communicating to people in front of him, so it sounds like he's expecting to play DM
