Well, I played Left Half (left midfield) in the fifties, in a definite 1-2-3-5. Amateur of course. I also played the same position and same configuration in hockey. In my experience it was prevalent at that time. But I am probably a lot older than you and played at a lower standard. And I realise you are referencing the sixties.

Martinez plays for Aston Villa, that's why there is a furore about it. If the England keeper did it to get England through to the next round, never mind win the cup, there would not be a word against it. It is pretty minor compared to diving for a penalty or potentially breaking someone's leg. And it is really up to the penalty taker to rise above it. ( If you cannot take the heat, stay out of the kitchen.) Personally, I thought it was brilliant, like the shithousery against Man U. It's a game - nobody died.

I agree. Smith never got the best out of them because of injury problems and a disrupted pre season. As for Gerrard, no player could thrive under him.
