Introduction & Picks for 25 August, 2013

Since I didn't want the football betting thread I started in "Other Football" to turn into a clone of Mister_Master's Portuguese league thread (i.e. a logn string of posts by me), I figured I'd move these posts to my blog here. I do post these picks on Google+, also. The picks in the linked thread went 7-12, +3.67 units (+2.03% of risk) Being that I'm from North America, I generally use North American notation, most notably in the form of moneyline pricing. Dark days are coming

I've seen some really bad things happen at Villa, in my time as a fan. Losses in league cups to lower league teams (Scunthorpe, Sheffield United) but I have never felt so deflated and depressed as I do at this moment. Don't get me wrong, Bradford deserve their massive achievement 100% and I wish them all the best for the final. But whilst this is their finest hour, this is also my clubs darkest hour and I am not sure we can pull this around in time to save our premiership status. It is

Lerner: Spend or Sell.

This year The Premier League have outdone themselves and managed to sell the TV rights to next seasons Premier League games for a staggering amount of money, an amount which will cost 3 unfortunate teams around 60 million pounds this summer when they suffer relegation to The Championship. Fans saying they cannot wait for the 'bubble to burst in football' I can't agree with you more - however it is not happening this summer with the fee's and ludicrous amounts of money only increasing in 2013.

Take it into the league please lads

After Tuesday night's impressive and perhaps slightly unexpected League Cup romp in Norwich, Villa rather annoyingly dropped another place in the league owing to one of the teams below us beating one of the teams below us. That's twice this weekend that has happened *grrr*. I think most can agree that we are playing better than results or league position would suggest. Indeed our trouncing of one of the form sides in the league in their own back yard would point at that fact. Yes they were ful

    • Spuds, metaphorically speaking are now "smelling blood". They know that our form has dropped off with two difficult games for us next up. 4th spot awaits. All they have to do is win their games and I think they will 😣 If we end up getting 5th spot and losing in an European competition semifinal, it will look on paper as an outstanding season, however I think many of us will be disappointed if that is what happens. We look toothless and devoid of ideas now, not helped by injuries and loss of form. If the Villa was a marathon runner we have "hit the wall" VTID
    • Villa fans are some of the best in the country, how dare you make that claim. How many games have you been to this season? I bet I’ve been to more than you so making out you’re more of a fan than me is utter nonsense.   References to 2016 are so boring, probably why we never achieve anything, we benchmark our best season against our worst season despite there not being one player in the currrnt squad that was here 8 years ago. How about benchmarking our current season to 1996 when we won a trophy and still finished 4th?   The players have done great for the most part, I’m just very disappointed that they’ve ended the season in such poor form which could undo everything good they’ve worked for. It doesn’t make me a bad fan for expressing that FFS.
    • If he doesn't want to be here, sell him. I'm fed up of loaning players out for pittance and then them leaving cheap at the end of their deal, or free because it expires.
    • I’ve slept it off, but I still just as peed off as yesterday. I understand my emotions can run high during and after a game so I’m going to try to avoid the match day thread for the rest of this season. That way I can’t fall out with fellow Villa fans when we should be getting along, there is a lot of division on this forum at the moment.   I’m also just going to accept we will finish 5th and pay little attention to the last 2 games. As everyone keeps telling me we’re too knackered to produce anything now until we’ve had a summer break so if that’s the case I don’t expect we’ll turn up for either of our last 2 games.   This season has been more stressful than last season even if we do finish 2 or even 3 places higher. I’ve probably aged 5 years the last few weeks alone.
    • Everyone has been saying it for a while
    • Out of position for me like or not.
    • A true Villa fan doesn't think we deserve CL, and is a little depressed if we get in. CL is clearly not what it used to be any more.
    • Could we forfeit the last two of our games and take the 0-3 from both? That way we could rest our players for next season.
    • Sounds so easy finding buyers for all of those players
    • As ive posted elsewhere, look at the match day squads in December v City/Arsenal and the strength in the team and bench and you will see why the drop off has happend   KTF, get over the line with CL and rest, recover and reset and next season will be another exciting season to look forward to and although a cliche what felt like a dream only 5 years ago when Dr Tony nearly took us under
