From: Villa have a point to prove against Chelsea

Aston Villa take on Chelsea at Villa Park this weekend, with the home crowd able to sigh a breath of relief after the club have moved themselves out of the relegation mire. Back-to-back wins against fellow bottom-half opponents Sunderland and Norwich have lifted the Birmingham-based side to 40 points, and a minor miracle will now be needed for Villa to go down.

That said much is still to play for. Villa are only three points from 10th place, and with positive results in their last two fixtures could actually make the top half. Although Betfair have the side as outsiders to beat Chelsea on Saturday, even at home, Paul Lambert's men will be motivated to keep up their good form.

The fact that the west Londoners inflicted an 8-0 hammering on Villa, starting the club's second-half of the season slide, means that the hosts should have revenge on the agenda.

Chelsea are in need of a win to secure a top-four Premier League place, and also have the Europa League final to play next Wednesday. Rafa Benitez will most likely not rest any of his key players for the game given that Arsenal and Tottenham will look to pile pressure on with wins this weekend.

Villa's home form has not been good enough this season, and this will need to be one of the key things that needs to change for the club to have a more positive campaign in 2013-14. A 6-1 win over Sunderland will hopefully be the shot in the arm and boost in confidence that the side needed at home, and a positive result against Chelsea would be great with next season in mind.

Finally, a good result against Chelsea and strong end to the season may well be the difference between keeping and losing key striker Christian Benteke. The Belgian frontman has been a shining ray of light in an otherwise dull campaign, and will have suitors this summer. An upturn in the club's fortunes may well convince Benteke that his future is in Birmingham.

    • First episode of The Red King was good. Lots of Wicker Man influence.
    • My favourite as a kid was "Bedders" on Coventry Rd, Bandit Country. My Nan took me as a kid. That was run by three generations of the same family for years. Only opened weekdays 11.30 till 2.00 pm and Friday night 5.30 till 7.30 (Catholic population, apparently). I kind of liked that tradition, and it still adhered too, but the family sold it a few years ago and it just doesn't have that same feel, sadly. The fish and chips with mushy peas was delicious and they would do these diced onions pickled in vinegar, which, for some reason didn't taste like your usual pickled onions, much better tbf. It certainly had a decent reputation back in the day, but so did a lot of other things.  What I would give to be able to play the old pinball machines where, in some cafes, you could get money for clocking up so many games. The trick was to get the number "16" with your first ball. Don't know how I got on to that subject.
    • If it's a Villa / Fiorentina final, save for a) some moment of magic from Bonaventura or González or b) some colossal brainfart performance by Villa, the final is going to be a slaughter.  Fiorentina have just about managed to squeak through to the semis via some very poor teams, have been perennial choke artists whenever they've had any recent sniff of silverware, form has absolutely nosedived since the new year and they're already bracing for another summer of turmoil (talk of having to sell González to fund another overhaul of the squad) as Italiano won't sign a new contract so is as good as gone come the end of the season.  All that against the backdrop of Joe Barone's death as well.
    • Serbian kid was starting in CL matches already (and did a great job vs City) though been injured for long time, must be thinking he's gonna get up and running quite quickly. But yea bit of a surprise regardless
    • Can you heeearrrrrrr me *quack* *quack* *quack*
    • And lose to Burnley and Chelsea just to be consistent
    • Ipswich could be promoted before they play Huddersfield on the last day if they win their next two
    • They're basically down with two draws so would be comical if Rowett plays the final two like he did Rotherham. Judging by his comments today he realises they'll need to have more of a go so that will leave more space between midfield and defence and Huddersfield do have pace in the final third. Sheff Weds need to just match their results now so would finish above them drawing their final two. They couldn't finish above Plymouth on 48 points unless Plymouth lost their last two games by six goals. I'd say it's looking far more likely they're going this time compared to other years personally. 49 points and they're still down if Plymouth draw one game (and don't lose the other heavily), Blackburn draw one game and Sheff Weds win one of their final two games.
    • That’s my prediction too. They’ll scrape up and celebrate like they won the champions league.
