it is silly to suggest we shouldn't get him just because he is 31. He plays consistently all the time and very well for Liverpool, so to suggest he isnt' good enough to villa is stupid because, although it pains me to say it, Liverpool are a lot biger than us

He was class against Ronaldhino in the CL, and never looked out of his depth, he'd provide a great experience in defence and also is not afraid to push forward and put good crosses in. class signing to complment a McShane signing....

McShane looked more comfortable as a CB than a right back to me.

Why not go for Alves instead? Think big gentlemen.
Afonso or Bruno? If it's A he could be a sensation if he can reproduce lasts seasons form in the prem.

Oh gawd...let's not start with the Alves family again.

But I think he means Daniel.

WE NEED A CREATIVE MIDFIELDER!!!!... especially one without a history of injuries!!!

I would class Young, Barry, Maloney and Berger as creative. I wouldn't be adverse to signing another one but I think other positions are more important (unless a top player comes along who is willing to join us of course).

Not seen much to be honest.... however from what i'd heard on here he was moved into RB, mind you if he's still young, no reason he can't be tutored by finnan? how come he looks more suited to CB?

good in the air? as i said not seen much myself, whats his strengths and weaknesses?

Trigger, he plays CB for ROI. He's a no-nonsense CB in the mould of Mellberg with possibly more blood 'n guts about him. Will regularly stick his head where it shouldn't be (that doesn't sound right  ). At this stage in his development he can go slightly out of position. I haven't seen enough of him to know where his shortcomings are, other than the obvious inexperience.

Finnan would be a very good signing, IMO.

A lot of people are saying they'd be embarrassed if we signed Titus Bramble.

Well me, I'd be embarrassed if Walsall signed him, and I don't normally give 2 hoots for Walsall.

O'Neill relishing transfer market battles

May 31 2007

By Bill Howell, Birmingham Mail

MARTIN O'Neill admits that the financial muscle of West Ham and Newcastle could make his job all the harder this summer.

But he says he will relish the task of competing with them as he attempts to build a squad capable of taking Villa to the next level.

Both Alan Curbishley and Sam Allardyce have been handed significant sums with which to turn their clubs into European contenders next season.

O'Neill has been given around £25million-£30million to play with and is unconcerned by the riches to be splashed elsewhere.

He said: "It won't be easy, but that's the beauty of it. I'm not sure it's the case we're all going for the same players.

"One thing's for sure, we're going to to try to improve and we have our own priorities."

The Hammers are believed to be on the brink of an £8.5million move for Scott Parker while O'Neill admits Newcastle will put up tough competition for some targets.

"West Ham made their intentions very clear in January and they have made them clear now, so I expect them to be very big players in the transfer market in the summer," he said.

"They have got renewed life from staying up and there's no doubt about it, if they were making inroads in January they are certainly going to go for it now.

"I believe they had a talented group of players anyway and probably should never have found themselves down there anyway.

"And Newcastle will be giving it a big go now as well, as they always do."

O'Neill is biding his time with a reluctance to pay significantly over the odds.

Liverpool's insistence of a £10million-£12million fee for Craig Bellamy has cooled his interest in the Welsh international with better value for money sought elsewhere.

One player now thought to be back on his radar is left-back Paul Robinson, who has publicly spoken of his wish to play in the top flight following Albion's play-off final defeat.

The club skipper would cost around £1.5million and would be a straight replacement for Jlloyd Samuel, who has signed for Bolton, and offer competition to Wilfred Bouma.
