Margaret Thatcher dies of a stroke.

On my visit to Chile I found divided opinions on Pinochet that eclipse those we have seen here in the past week, and he was responsible for killing people. Many people genuinely revere his memory.

Yes, the same was true of Hitler, Saddam and other murderous thugs.  It's a very sad phenomenon.

What a bunch of saddos.

I think you'll find Richard's spelling is to be preferred.

:-) - I am loving the Tory replies to the flag thing. Deliberately missing the point as usual, still as long as they have all dried their hankies now and are looking to the skies for the plooms of white smoke

Clarkson distraught at meeting people he couldn't offend

JEREMY Clarkson has admitted being out of his offensiveness depth at Thatcher’s funeral.

He said: “I told the old chap beside me that they should be cremating Lady Thatcher on a mountain of tyres as a two-finger gesture to the eco-mentalists who run their cars on organic hemp, and he just nodded.

“Desperate for attention, I made comments about strikers, foreigners and even said the Kia Cee’d is a fun car to drive. The mourners looked at me as if I were perfectly sane.

“I ended up serving canapes at the wake, just because I wanted them all to like me.”

Nowhere near in the same numbers though. You didn't mention Stalin. I guess he murdered more than most and he is still revered by many and still honoured in his home town.

Seems to be a very large crowd at the funeral procession.

Oh sorry, that was Bobby Sands.

I know that today is also a memorial service for socialism in this country, but that one is somewhat unworthy.

Besides that, everyone knows that gangster funerals always draw the biggest crowds.

That Mother Theresa must have made them lots of offers they can't refuse :-)

Now the dust is settling on this whole charade (and that is not a leak from the cask), I wonder how much political damage and bonus points have been achieved by what has obviously been an attempt by the Tory party to make into a political event rather than a trip to the furnace for the old woman. I am betting that media outlets of the right will talk about mass grieving from the crowds while those on the left will show the empty streets and places where police outnumbered public etc. Call me cynical but I suspect that the Tory party were hoping for more mass adulation for Thatcher than we saw something they could draw on in soon to be held elections etc. Seems like they could not even organise that. I wonder if the "Boston massacre" took away some of the publicity they were clearly hoping for?

It's been a badly managed thing from start to end, another PR gaffe from Cameron et al

Were they trying to make out some link between Thatcher (and the Tory party) and the Union Jack? Maybe like the BBC commentator this morning they got confused and thought it was a Royal wedding?

Must admit my initial thought that as she was PM of the UK , people would fly the Union flag if they so wished  ....

the only person I can see making a link between the 2 is you  :)
