January 2013 Transfer Talk

Delph, KEA, Herd and N'Zogbia are not playing on a regular basis so we might assume that Lambert has deemed them not good enough?

If we don't improve the squad in the January window and allow Bent to leave then my feeling is that we will be relegated.

I agree, but am also sceptical about Lambert's chances of being able to bring other players in while we have the likes of NZogbia and co still on the books.

Has Downing gone to Boro yet on loan?

If not and the rumours are correct about Bent to Liverpool, even on loan, i wonder will that suggested deal involve Downing coming back to us on loan?

Would seem a shame to swap those two players when they're both at their most effective when they play together. I'd rather see them both in our side rather than Liverpool's though.

Both Lambert and Rodgers seem to be against the traditional winger whipping a cross into a fox in the box type mentality though. O'Neill will probably try and buy them both......

He burnt his bridges when he left us Morpheus so I do not want him back. Let him regret the error he made joining them on the bench at Pool or playing the likes of Small Heath with Boro and watching England games on SKY rather than playing in them. But, I guess the wage increase he got would cushion those blows.

Well, I'd like to see Given/Dunne/Bent/N'Zogbia gone and replaced with good players on lower wages.

A combative midfielder to sit in a three with Westwood/Ireland is essential.

And a winger who can provide a goal threat and a decent cross.

Pretty much how I see it.

I don't think the all conquering midfielder that we've been after for years actually exists, but someone like Parker would be ideal.

Then you think we still have a sell to buy policy? I certainly hope it isn't true because those players are going to take a while to shift unless we can get them out on loan or accept really low offers. We desperately need reinforcements in January irrespective of who is still at the club.

I totally agree with you on having both players in our team but as you say Lambert wants to play in a different way. Good shout concerning O'Neill as i did also suggest Bent going back to Sunderland as a distinct possibility!

I'm desperate John for us to bring in more experienced quality like Downing in January as he would instantly improve our team but the difficulty is that Lambert has shown no inclination to use a formation to accommodate wingers in our play so it probably wouldn't happen anyway. Do you think under the present circumstances the majority of fans would welcome him back again in the same way that they would Milner?

I think N'Zog will be given a chance when he's fit, when he's been on he haven't been as bad he was last season. Given will probably go to MLS or another PL club in january or summer.

I actually have to agree with this. N'Zogbia needs to be played though in his favoured position cutting in from the right which he did so successfully at Wigan. More of a free role and maybe a plan B for the manager to consider when we need a goal although if we did receive a bid for him say in the region of 3.5m-4m Lambert would probably sell him.

I tend to think that Lambert is maybe a little too rigid in his tactics at the moment which is stopping him from considering playing N'Zogbia and Bent (different debate). I would like to see N'Zogbia, Ireland and Bent playing from now until January in the right system to accomodate all three but it isn't going to happen. I've noted several posters saying that we don't have a plan B, yet those players would give us one if Lambert would just entertain the idea?

Surley Bent and Gabby are our only big earners now ? - If we are still looking to trim the wage bill much more we won't be in the prem much longer.

I don't beleive we are - I beleive all the pruning has been done - but we won't be bringing anyone else in on much above 40k per week - all IMO of course.

I wouldn't call it a sell to buy policy, but a club with average gates of around 30,000 can only pay so many players. It would seem pretty reckless to be bringing more players in on top of what we already have without moving some players on in the first place. NZogbia, Hutton, Warnock, Dunne, Bent & Given probably represent 6 of the 10 best players at the club, they need to be moved on before we can look at bringing more players in. On top of that we have players like Delph and Ireland, who's future at the club remains dubious at best.

That said, I think we could release them all on a free and still have transfer funds available, but getting the club to a stable financial position isn't going to be achieved by adding more players to the pile. We might make the odd panic signing to steer us away from relegation, but it'll be balanced out by cutbacks in the summer.

And rightly so.

Thanks for clarifying that. We had no idea that you think we will get relegated (we won't by the way, we will finish comfortably mid-table)

Yeah good post and i generally agree with you. Hutton is out on loan at Forest and has said his time is up at our club and we can all rejoice at that. Warnock is also out on loan and probably won't come back either. Both will probably be given frees. Both Dunne and Given will either go in January or in the summer to America for one last pay day so thats another four players off our wage bill. So i really think with that in mind there should be enough room to bring more players in. If we don't bring more players in on the basis of waiting to get rid of those aforementioned players at worst in the summer then we are taking an awful gamble with our Premiership status and i would hope that Lerner wouldn't be stupid enough to insist on that?

I can't see PL playing out and out wingers - he seems to favour a narrower style

We need to ramp up CB and CM though

I think it's narrow because our two wide players are basically forwards playing out of position.

I would hope we'll buy at least 1 good wide player in January to improve our attacking options.

Look mate do me a favour and go and play with your rattle with your other friends in the kindergarden while the rest of us enjoy actually debating rather than trying to point score off someone's every post!

I don't disagree with you and I'm a fan of wingers but they seem to be slowly dropping out of favour.

I think we need a couple of wide specialist midfielders rather than Gabby & Weimann (which is what you are saying i think) - although I wonder if they could adapt to the position

If not I'm not sure what their future at VP is - back up to Benteke?

I hope you're right, and that we will be able to get rid of some of these players.

If Lerner sees that we're in trouble, which he should, then perhaps he will stretch the purse strings in the knowledge that a fair few of these fringe players will be off in the summer. But if that is the case, then we should probably prepare ourselves to a summer similar to the one when Downing & Young left, with only a fraction of the money re-invested back into the playing squad.
