peterms
the impression given was that he may struggle to get the Republicans to vote with him ... I forget his name ( it may have been Dick Lugar ) but one of the Republicans who was more "deal" friendly when it came to getting the Republicans onside with Obama lost his seat last night Yes, there's a good chance the Republicans will try to block him as much as possible. But the things Snowy mentions don't depend on their co-operation as far as I can see. He doesn't need their approval to stop murdering people illegally. tonyh29
I'm not familiar enough with the workings of US government , but a quick search does indeed suggest that policies like Obama's "disposition matrix" have never even been debated yet alone voted on
mjmooney Posted November 7, 2012 VT Supporter Share Posted November 7, 2012 I'm under no illusions that Obama is a crusading liberal (despite some of the more amusing right-wing propaganda that had him as a virtual communist); the US president is mostly the figurehead for vested interests in the military-industrial-CIA complex, anyway. And I don't think a Republican presidency would have necessarily have been a disaster for the world (although it wouldn't have been much good for gays and women in the US). My sense of relief is simply that they have prevented a **** MORMON from getting in.
Eames
The future for the Republicans will be an interesting one. Do they lurch further to the right - fuelled by Tea Party outrage and conspiracy theories? or do they soften towards the centre and try and pick up support from the female/black/hispanic population. The sad thing is that Romney is considered to be a more liberal republican who was forced right to secure the candidacy..... I shudder to think what a more right wing republican could do. legov
n view of how blacks are voting over whelmingly for him I'm Surprised Obama doesn't appear to have won Mississippi .. Doesn't it have a black majority population ? Mississippi is not majority black Although the black vote traditionally is vehemently pro-religion, anti-gay, anti-abortion, which waters down their tendency to liberalism. Doesn't seem to have impacted on the Democrat's share of the black vote at all, African Americans vote overwhelmingly in favour of Democrats. By that, I mean that 93% of them did so in this election. One of the great paradoxes of American politics, perhaps. It's true that surveys show blacks in America generally hold conservative views on social issues and religion, however that never seems to translate into votes against Democrats. legov
I'm under no illusions that Obama is a crusading liberal (despite some of the more amusing right-wing propaganda that had him as a virtual communist) I think it depends on how you define "liberal." Socialised healthcare is (by America's standards) liberal. Pro-gay marriage, pro-choice and supporting higher taxes for the rich are all generally considered liberal positions. Drone strikes that result in civilian deaths are not. And I don't think a Republican presidency would have necessarily have been a disaster for the world I think it would have. The world economy is in a precarious state right now, and the last thing we need is an America that lurches back into the policies of the Bush era. CarewsEyebrowDesigner
Republicans need to ditch the Tea Party and all the religious shite and reclaim the centre. If this race taught them anything it should be that going way right then trying to take the centre last minute doesn't fool anyone. America really needs a competitive third party. tonyh29
Mississippi is not majority black yeah i know now , someone had already answered that one for me a few pages back , I think I got confused by a combination of my general ignorance of the size and demographic of US states and a search return from my phone when I typed it in that sorta suggested on first glance that it did have one having followed the search return now I'm at a PC rather than phone , the full article was linking to a list of counties within Mississippi with a black majority in reply to my search question rather than answering my question with an affirmative Mississippi Adams County (52.8%)Bolivar County (65.1%)Claiborne County (84.1%)Clay County (56.3%)Coahoma County (69.2%)Copiah County (51.0%)Hinds County (61.1%)Holmes County (78.7%)Humphreys County (71.5%)Issaquena County (62.8%)Jasper County (52.9%)Jefferson County (86.5%)Jefferson Davis County (57.4%)Kemper County (58.1%)Leflore County (67.7%)Marshall County (50.4%)Noxubee County (69.3%)Quitman County (68.6%)Sharkey County (69.3%)Sunflower County (69.9%)Tallahatchie County (59.4%)Tunica County (70.2%)Washington County (64.6%)Wilkinson County (68.2%)Yazoo County (54.0%)
