Villa boss targets last-minute swoop for midfielder

Jan 31 2007

MARTIN O'Neill takes his strongest Villa squad yet to Newcastle tonight, admitting that part of him still wants a new face just for added security with over a third of the season remaining.

O'Neill will travel to the North-east at the last minute as he hopes to add a fresh face to his ranks before the close of business at midnight tonight.

Having allowed Lee Hendrie to rejoin Stoke City last night - as both Blackburn and Middlesbrough elected to wait until the summer when he will be a free agent - O'Neill is on the look-out for midfield options.

But it appears his pursuit of targets hinges on other clubs signing players today.

O'Neill said: "We've got 14 games left, which is still over a third of the season, and there's a kind of an insurance that you wouldn't mind someone else in to make sure of things.

"Having said that, we've got players coming back from injury. But whatever comes or goes, by midnight tonight, that's it."

O'Neill is jubilant at being able to take a squad minus Mark Delaney, Craig Gardner and Jlloyd Samuel to St James' Park.

"We've been pretty thin on the ground for the last seven or eight weeks and that's been a bit of a problem," he said. "This week we've had the most players out training than at any other time since I came to the football club.

"Pre-season, even when we were in Holland, we had a few back here injured like Steven Davis.

"So what we've got now is the most we've had at any time. I think the atmosphere has been really good. Obviously the win and the new people coming in has given everybody a lift. It is busier now and that's encouraging."

What midfielders other than Maloney and perhaps SWP would we even be interested in at this late stage.

The only club who may be in a position to sell a midfielder is Liverpool and that is only if they sign Mascherano but I can't think of anyone they would sell that I would want.

Felix Magath has resigned as Bayern manager. That might be the trigger to set everything off - if his reasons had something to do with a certain Owen Hargreaves leaving ........ Or not, I dunno.
