Could Herd even do a job on the right side of a defensive trio? He didn't disgrace himself at right-back, there'd be less of an attacking onus on him (a department he has shown some deficiency in) and he seems to have the height and physicality to make a good fist of defensive duties.

I also think shifting N'Zogbia to the left of a front 3 could prove beneficial; there'd be little reliance on him to deliver from wide, leaving him to take defenders on without exposing the entirety of the left flank if he loses possession. He'd also be closer to a centrally-deployed Bent which would (you'd hope) result in an improvement in link-up play between the two. Have Gabby on the right of the attack, playing just off Bent's shoulder thereby allowing him space to run into through-balls from the midfield and placing him in an ideal location to chase and harry any opposition ball-carriers still in their own half.

The problems that would arise, though:

1) Whom do you play on the left-wing in place of N'Zogbia?

2) How do you fit Stephen Ireland into a formation that will often require a defensively-minded approach from the central midfielders?

Hamsik plays in the attacking 3 with Lavezzi and Cavani and would say as similar players Ireland could do that

True, but I'm asking where would you use him if N'Zogbia's already taking up that third spot in attack (apologies, question #2 was meant as a follow-on to my earlier point regarding N'Zogbia and, looking back, it didn't read particularly clearly)?

dont think Milan are that great and people blinded by them destoying a woeful Arsenal team. Luck of draw is important as real vs barca possible in next round unless they change rules
Yeah Milan have a midfield that really isn't CL quality, and no quality LB. It'll be the difference when they play a top team.

Bayern have a shot, they'll probably lose to one of the Spanish sides because they can't defend. But they're good enough going forward to always have a chance.

I like the CL this year with no English side standing a chance.

The thing is with the Champions League you can never take league form into account. Teams care so much about the Champions League that they rest players for it, also the players playing in both won't try as hard in the league as they don't want to be injured/tired for the CL game. Hence the league results aren't as good. Unless you have a massively good squad such as Real Madrid.

That's why even if Bayern have been terrible in Germany, even if Barca have been rubbish away from home, even if Napoli are placed 6th in Serie A, they all still have a chance in Champions League because they will try their hardest. Although that probably does mean Barca's hardest beats everyone.

Looking into the future. Check out LiveScore.com. The Motherwell v Hibernian match doesn't start for 3 hours, yet they already know Hibernian's L.Griffiths will be booked in the 32nd minute :thumb:

their crystal ball didn't see isaiah osbourne scoring, did it :)

The Gods themselves couldn't foresee that.
