The correct pronunciation is yag-waar (from the Tupi-Guarani languages of the Brazilian interior). American English gets the first sound wrong, transliterating the "y" into a "j", but other than that pronounces it correctly. The British pronunciation makes the same transliteration and then tries to pronounce it as an English word and ends up adding a syllable. The American pronunciation is closer to the correct one, ergo, more correct.

Now if Jaguar were to abandon any pretense of connection with the cat, this argument holds no water.

So in Tupi-Guarani the word for a jaguar is pronounced as Yag-war, but the English word for a Jaguar is pronounced Jag-yew-er, Seeing as we're speaking English I guess that confirms the correct pronunciation in our case is Jag-yew-er.

When America start using Tupi-Guarni as an official language you can feel free to pronounce it Jag-waar if you like, but please not in reference to the rather splendid motor cars.

It doesn't matter were the word derives from, if it did all those French and German derived words in the English language should be pronounced as the French or Germans would.

As an example the french pronounce the number six as sis, now obviously if I'm counting in English I wouldn't use the french pronouncement would I.

Mmm just like English and "Shanghai" or "Beijing" or "Taipei"

Was on HUKD last night and noticed Skybet doing £40 worth of free bets (I'm not a gambling man at all), no deposit required or even bank details required (unless you win and want to withdraw the money).

I put my £10 sports bet on Man City to beat Chelsea whilst they were 0-1 down, got 6/1 so now £60 better off for no risk and very little effort. :hooray:

You also get £10 to bet on skybingo, £10 in sky casino and £10 on sky poker.

And the English pronunciations/spellings of: Paris, Munich, Rome, Leghorn, Florence, Bombay, etc. Or for that matter, the French pronunciations/spellings of Londres, Les Etats Unis, Allemagne, etc. Or the Glaswegian pronunciation of just about anything. :winkold:

Signed up to sponsor a guide dog yesterday. €7.50 a month until he is assigned to a blind person, makes me feel happy that does.

Dunno, I don't give much to charity as I don't really trust them to use it well but at least I can follow how he is doing until he gets a job.

My dad is regestieered blind and I love dogs so it seems a good fit.

I get photos of the dog as he grows up but every time I see a guide dog I just think AMAZING.

I did a pub quiz on friday. Well, not really a pub quiz. A charity quiz in a school, but you get the picture.

We cam 3rd and missed out on first by 2 questions (4 points, btu most questions were worth two points)

Now the reason this cheers me up is because I got overruled on 3 questions, all of which ended up with my answer being right.

So had my team listened to me we'd have won.

I also won a woman's bath pampering kit in the raffle.

Silver linings and all that

i like that smug feeling you get when you are overruled only to be proven right when the answers are called out.
I've thought about this a lot, but I sadly concluded that we have selective memory. We only remember those "told you so" instances, and conveniently forget the times when we got it spectacularly wrong. It's like refereeing decisions that even out over a season.

As for the lone wolf theory, that swings both ways as well. Sometimes another person making random suggestions prompts something you might not otherwise have remembered. Interestingly, it was just the missus and me last night (two of our usual five are on holiday and one has gone to Australia for a year). So maybe two is the optimum.

Yeah that's true. Although on Friday I can genuinely say I didn't overrule anyone to then be proved wrong. it really was a case of me being overruled 3 times and being proved right 3 times.

Also, I came into my own in the picture round. Mainly because most of the pictures were of celebs before they were young. There was a couple of threads on here (started by Rob I think) of those pcture quizzes, and the majority of ones in this quiz on Friday I'd seen on there. So I looked like a frickin' genius.

During a pub quiz we had a question along the lines of which famous horse was buried at this racetrack? My team all said Redrum but I said that was too obvious and it must be Desert Orchid. For some reason they went with Desert Orchid, which was wrong, and it was during a round where one wrong answer gets you zero for the round. I have no idea why they listened to me, idiots. :P
