Ings? I agree with the latter. We're not rotating strikers so how do you attract a big money striker?

I don't think we're rotating strikers because we don't have like for like equivalents. For all of Ings' qualities, he couldn't do what Watkins does for us. The difference in presence up front was noticable whenever Watkins was dropped.

Salah doesn't get rotated. He threw a hissy fit last week getting subbed on 77 mins or around that. He's been playing most games all comps for years because he's a competitive athlete

Him throwing a hissy fit when he got subbed doesn't really change my point. Even if it did that's just one example. There are other teams who have a different approach.

Like all the other players out there who get injured sometimes. To be fair to Salah, he seems to have a pretty great injury record, but he's just one example.

I just keep thinking that Zaniolo could provide good cover and competition in that area… so much to his game (dribbling and creativity) and is versatile but mainly… he’s such a good and technical finisher… I’ve wanted a player who can produce a variety of finishes and is cultured in his attacking play for so long now…

As long as we can keep him fit and play him into form, he could surprise a lot of people… we could be the right environment  for him to thrive in and he could be playing under the perfect manager for him and his career…

I do think versatile forwards is the way the game is going… top class CFs are become a rare breed… Don’t think we are done in the market in this sense either… especially with the young players we are moving out, it seems like we’re making room for more…

Diaby can fill in too but I keep seeing Nico as someone who can take up different positions and still be very effective… Moussa may well be played on the wing more in future…

It might suit Zaniolo to play as more of an attacker or goal scorer if his injury history has affected him in anyway… could he even, eventually, succeed Ollie as our CF? Rather than just cover/compete?

🤔

We could very well sign a CF… I wouldn’t completely rule anything out. I feel the issue with Ings was that he wasn’t mobile enough or involved enough in the play, not an Unai type player, so maybe there is a more suitable option out there… unless we already have it…

Not Ings obviously.  Someone who better fits our system.  I'm sure Emery and Monchi will know of such players. Probably someone in La Liga, like Borja Iglesias or Gerard Moreno.

We may in the future though with the amount of games in the future, just as we have 4 quality CB’s, a wealth of quality CM’s, yet as a main striker position Watkins has no quality alternative with Duran very raw and young whereas Archer’s future at Villa seems uncertain.

You’ll say some of the non-strikers to play there but I don’t buy that and we’ve had that conversation before so no need to go over old ground plus Emeryhas mentioned at least twice this year the need for another main striker.

So for outfield top end of the pitch players, the main striker position is the only position we don’t have quality competition, whereas the support to the striker and midfield has multiple quality alternatives.

If we sell JPB and Archer in addition to Ramsey we lose 3 home grown players. Wonder if we’re raising money for an English purchase, maybe Brennan Johnson?

Ollie wasn't a striker at Brentford until they made him one. Diaby was a striker at PSG youth before used as attacking wide player but they drift and switch during the game anyway. People obsess about the term "striker". The fact that there's few popular FWD players in FPL is reflective that goals and assists are not coming from recognized "strikers" even less so now Kane has gone. Game has changed years ago. Dan the Villa podcast guy said a month ago we'll be bringing in multi-function players. He's right

I think the issue is players that have been in the club for 2 years and got through the youth system is our problem. Kadan Young probably? I don’t think Kellyman will fit that although I look forward for his potential minutes to play this season. Possibly Revan?

Yeah and that got him the big move, not being a winger.

What kids are in youth is completely different to an adult, both in terms of the quality they are playing against and obviously they felt he was far better at attacking wide player anyway.  Strange argument about what he did in his youth.

Wow! Who cares what some podcast guy says.

Yes but we’ll also bring in specialists in positions.  Also we may buy a striker that can play in other positions but striker is his main position rather than fudging a non-striker into the striker’s position.

people obsess with players needing to be “multi-function” as well when most elite players generally play and excel in one position most of the time.  Most of our players play roughly in the same position give or take

I bet Spurs and West Ham wish they hadn't wasted ££££ over they years on absolute potato "strikers". Man U too the list is endless

That’s why I prefer to be careful about who to get especially strikers. It’s the most failure signings from what I can see and cost most. Hopefully Duran steps up, Zaniolo could do a great job I assume. I’m not sure who’s our next academy striker, is it Smith? I’d like him to have some minutes if we made it to the group stage of UECL or if we can have a big win tonight, we can give him some minutes next week.
