Racism - Neymar/Alvaro

I'm really conflicted on this one.

On the one hand, it's absolutely vital that we come down hard on any racism in football or in society. It's been a year where there's been some progress (I think) in the way that we're talking about racism, in the way that we're looking at it and hopefully in behaviours and the way people treat each other in future.

If Alvaro is found to have used the language that's reported in the incident with Neymar, we need to throw the book at him - it's utterly disgraceful. He's already down for a ban, but I think we need to look at something draconian, something extreme - the rest of the season, that sort of thing.

Neymar is an awful human being, he lacks dignity, intelligence, decency, honesty and any kind of integrity - but in terms of how we treat racism in society, that makes it some ways even more important that he's protected, that he has the right to be an arsehole if that's who he is. Being against racism isn't restricted to being in favour of people that behave in the way you'd like. Protecting arseholes against racism is as important as protecting people you think are great. Racism is racism, it's wrong no matter who it's pointed at.

And then there's the other thing that comes with Neymar - he'd lost it in the game, a lot of players had, he'd gone through his full performance, diving, moaning, the sly nasty aggression and he'd finished it up with a crafty, cowardly punch in the back of the head. It is by no means beyond the realm of possibility that he's then, in the heat of the moment, made up an accusation of racism in order to hurt his enemy.

Neymar has doubled down on the accusation in his social media, Alvaro has defended himself and said it didn't happen. Both clubs have come out in support of their players, but then you'd expect that. No player from either team has come out and supported the accusation, although it might be that they've been asked to maintain a silence - I can't help but feel that silence might have broken if there were others that heard it.

I'm finding it very hard to believe Neymar but I'm also really concerned that if he's right, he's protected, even though he's an absolute whopper.

I'm not convinced that we'll get a good, honest, open investigation - Neymar is one of the worlds most high profile athletes, working for a club owned by one of the worlds richest regimes - there will be a huge pressure to ensure he doesn't come out of this with his marketing value undermined. There will also be the socio-political pressure to ensure that the right things are being done and that the French FA are seen to be doing the right things in terms of fighting racism.

There were an awful lot of cameras at the game and as yet, I've seen or heard nothing that suggests anyone has any evidence.

How it plays out will be very interesting - on the one hand Alvaro could find his career over, on the other Neymar might be having a tantrum that sets back the progress of anti-racism for no other reason than a losers fit of pique.

If Neymar is right, Alvaro should be rightly admonished and it will be justified if he were to lose his job - if Alvaro is right, he'd be in a position to sue Neymar for millions and Neymar would become a footballing villain for the ages.

For one of these two, life will never be the same.

I don't envy the French FA.

Innocent until proven guilty...

Its not as if Neymar doesn’t have previous for deceiving people to get his own way... He’s an entitled prick

I don’t think it’s anywhere near as rampant or common place within the footballing bubble as it is in comparison to wider society, I may be entirely wrong of course but that’s my impression.

Unless unequivocal proof comes out there’s nothing anyone can do about this particular situation but as per the OP my first thought was ‘I don’t believe him’, because it’s Neymar.

Di Maria, who has had Covid, allegedly spitting at Alvaro as well.

Thats potentially a prison sentence now in the UK.

PSG must be most loathsome team around

I wouldn't play until 2021! The very harsh sanction that can fall to Neymar

'El Partidazo de COPE' assured that Olympique de Marseille "has some images in which it is shown that they call Hiroki Sakai 'Chinese shit'", Japanese footballer of OM.

The Brazilian program 'Esporte Espetacular', from TV Globo, analyzed in depth the video of the dispute between Neymar and Álvaro and their lip-reading specialists concluded that the former Villarreal player called the Brazilian a “monkey son of a bitch”.

Hours later, 'El Partidazo de COPE' assured that the Olympique de Marseille "has some images in which it is shown that it calls' Hiroki Sakai 'Chinese shit'", Japanese footballer of OM .

Alvaro has escaped sanction from the French FA, looks like Neymar wont get further punished either. Insufficient evidence and suppose the French FA will feel they got away with a big judgement call here

I think it’s actually the best thing to do in the situation when nothing can be proven. Only the two involved will probably ever know what was said in the heat of the moment. Best just to move on.
