I have the Velvets albums, and some Lou Reed, but I can't say I was ever a huge fan. 

 

He was one of those 'retrospective' legends really - regarded more highly by the post-punk generation than by people like me.

I can understand that view. The Velvet Underground are pretty much thought of as the pioneers of what became punk rock.

TBH I find his stuff all rather dreary. 

 

Exception that proves the rule: the "Rock'n'Roll Animal" live album, if only for the blistering guitars of Hunter & Wagner.
