  1. No new jobs at Land Rover. They are simply giving permanent contracts to workers already there who were on temporary contracts.
  2. Not entirely sure what your argument is here. In your earlier post your claim that the 19th century was a Golden age seemed to be based upon the fact that we had an Empire that scanned the globe and were undergoing an industrial revolution. I replied that ordinary peoples lives at that time were hardly condusive to labelling the era as a Golden age. You then counter this by stating that the whole world was suffering these depradations and that an awful child mortality rate of 38.1% was an improvement on an even more dreadful earlier one. Both of these facts would I think rather confirm that that particular period in history was most certainly not a Golden age. Personally I think we have yet to see any age deserve that accolade. Empires and industrialisation are not the best benchmark to measure such things. The quality of ordinary peoples lives is in my opinion of far greater imporance, and as you say,at that time, that was pretty awful on a global scale. I suppose it comes down to what the individuals criteria is for measuring such things. Ours obviously differ somewhat.
  3. During that so called Golden Age most of our population lived in abject poverty and struggled to find enough to eat. Housing was rank and life expectancy for working class people was below 60. Trade Unionism and a determination by ordinary people to oppose the worst exesses of the Capitalist Market system slowly dragged our people from that squalor. The present Government seems to be doing its best to return us to those days.
  4. All hail the "Beast of Bolsover". What you see is what you get. Not too many of todays politicians qualify for that accolade.
  5. It annoys me that wages for some hard working people in this country are so disgustingly low that they have to rely on benefit top ups to achieve a living wage.
  6. The point to remember is that a universal benefit is now a means tested one. That 50,000 ceiling will I believe be eroded in real terms over a period of time, ie by not uprating in line with inflation, something already being imposed on welfare benefits, until it is simply paid to fewer and fewer people. Ultimately the Tories will have a long term aim of destroying it altogether.
  7. Sometimes it is possible to tell very quickly if someone is good enough. He simply isn't good enough.
  8. It isn't the Governments role to ignore sections of society either. Society has obligations too. It isn't just about ourselves and our families. What she advocated turned our country into a pig trough. Those with the biggest snouts got, and continue to get the lions share. There is, contrary to what Thatcher said, such a thing as society, it is made up of individuals, but it most certainly exists and has responsibilities to those wthin it. Thatcher believed in the right of the individual to put their own interests above all else. Many now follow that path. We are a poorer country for it.
  9. Tony Benn would be my favourite. A man of great principle, with a belief in empowering ordinary people to have influence over their society. My least favourite would be Thatcher. A person who believed there was "no such thing as society " We still suffer to this day the consequences of her divisive tenure.
  10. Capitalism. If the capitalist money men think they can exploit workers in a different part of the world in order to make even more money, then any sense of patriotism or decency is simply thrown aside. Capitalism ultimately makes some people very rich indeed, the rest of us are expendable.
  11. The old saying "two wrongs don't make a right" springs to mind. And what the Tories are doing to the NHS is very wrong indeed.
  12. The guys found his level. Get what we can for him and move on.
  13. Has to be the most ridiculous post I've ever read on this site. Lerner has invested more of his own money on transfer fees than any other chairman in our history. He simply doesn't deserve such factually ignorant comments as this.
  14. Statistics can be very misleading. I prefer the evidence of my own eyes, and frankly Agbonlahor is a very average player. Little or no guile about him, more an athlete than a footballer. If we really are looking to improve as a team, he needs to be shipped out asap. If at the same time we can actually find some mugs to give us some money for the overated mediocrity all the better.
  15. Would sell Gabby asap 10 Mill for Warnock and Collins, in your dreams. Lambert will need a sight more than that methinks.
  16. He was gven a lot of money at Huddersfield, and failed. He will be given nowt at the sty, and will fail again.

    Jubilee

Thank **** thats over. Looking forward to the Bank Holiday when the old parasite kicks the bucket. Street Party anyone ?
  18. Jordan Rhodes is 22 and scored 40 goals this season. Would prefer him over Grant any day.
  19. Brilliant. Have to say the economists point about the Tories and their venture capitalist friends using the situation to implement their private sector versus public sector dogma is spot on. They both came over as pretty ignorant of facts.
  20. Vastly overated player. Worst finisher when one on one I have ever seen anywhere. Sell as quickly as possible.
  21. Baker I think has looked pretty solid. Cuellar was poor against Bolton. I'd go for Baker and Dunne at the Baggies. Clark and Baker will probably be our future pairing.
  22. Funny how the number of people who can't be bothered increases so rapidly whenever the Tories get in.
  23. It's all getting a bit silly now. I'm going to watch a match, I wish Mr Muamba a long and prosperous life. I will not be indulging in an oversentimentalized round of clapping.
  24. Oh FFS, behave yourself I've watched the game for 50 years. I've seen some truly great strikers at VP. Gabby aint one of them. He's more of an athlete than a footballer. Quick on the run but painfully slow to react on the pitch. Not a clever player, and lacking a good first touch. One on one he is probably the worst I have ever seen, his latest howler against Stoke, where he not only missed the goal but the Holte End ! being but the latest example. He may well love the Villa, but if thats the criteria for playing for our club I'll get me boots. He constantly throughout his career goes on huge non scoring runs, even under MON. I say again if we can mug someone for 12 million quid I'd snatch their hands off.
  25. Please God let this overated waste of space leave. If we can mug someone for 12 million I'll be over the moon. Robbie Keane should have opened some fans eyes to what a real top class striker is all about.
