  1. There is a lot of contradictory info on how eating to fewer calories sends your body into 'starvation mode'. I think there is some truth in the suggestion that too few calories over a prolonged period of time drops your metabolic rate, but by a relatively small amount (10% is a figure I've seen). I would be more concerned by the fact it's likely to be as much muscle mass being lost as fat with a starvation approach. Another one is the 'little and often' vs 3 larger meals. The alleged theory is your metabolism spikes for longer if you keep feeding it with small amounts every couple of hours, but other studies show that your metabolic rate rises dependant on the amount of calories you consume with each meal. So in effect eating 1 meal with a calorie value of 1000kcal will spike you metabolic rate for longer than 10 x 100 calories, so the net effect is the same overall.
  2. As Stevo said, there maybe an element of Broscience in this, but I have found it to be effective. Personally, I tried the whole walking for an hour at pace thing and it does get results, BUT it didn't shift the layer of fat around my lower stomach/love handles and you quickly reach a plateau. I've since embarked on high intensity interval training and the results after 10 days are pretty amazing so far. Again how much of this is broscience vs real science maybe debatable, but the biggest test is the results and this is working for me. The theory with HIIT is it works you both aerobically and anaerobically and if you are exercising on an empty stomach (or a generally low carb diet) it burns through your fat stores for energy far quicker than low/moderate intensity sessions. It's hard, no question about it, but I much prefer sprinting for a total of 10-12 mins over walking for an hour or more. I also get a big endorphin rush afterwards and it makes me feel ace for hours after. 3. I still haven't given up hope on this. I still think if he's given more time and decent backing, he could be a cracking manager for us - one of the best we've had. He might get the former whilst the club remains on the market, but it's unlikely he will get the latter during his time here, unless whoever eventually takes over gives him a chance or Lerner has a complete change of heart. I accept I'm in a minority on the good manger point and the 'stats' from his reign so far say otherwise, but I just think he's got it (whatever 'it' is) and in the right environment he will do brilliantly.
  4. I hope so, because going after him isn't going to help anyone.
  5. I wouldn't say 'crap' DK. I'm not saying he's great, but his record at Antwerp, Hull and Cardiff is ok. He didn't do well at blunderland, but he had a serious knee injury 20 in 31 for Antwerp 15 in 34 for Hull 13 in 48 for Cardiff An improvement on Bowery, Delfonz, Holte and scored more than Gabby and Weeman last season In a relegated team 600k and less of a gamble than that knob from Arsenal
  6. According to the Guardian, Frazier Campbell has a 600k release clause. I'd go for him at that price
  7. I don't see the harm in a 6 month loan to a decent championship side. See how he takes to the step up until Xmas and if he's flying and influencing games like he did for NC, then it could be a nice boost in Jan. I agree about pressure, with our fans and the current state of the team, it could ruin him.
  8. Looks like a 10m defender so far tonight!
  9. Personally, I think it Alcohol abstinence should be written into every players contract and they should be tested regularly. It's not the 80's/90's anymore. The old Harry Redknapp school of a beer or two does no harm is gone. Altleticism plays as much of a part in the modern game now as skill does (at the very top level anyway) and players need to have every edge they can. I don't think it's asking too much that players be told to abstain from a drug that causes harm to the body and can effect performance/recovery during a season. They can do pretty much anything they want with exceptions of drugs, it can't be that hard surely? Vlaar's attitude to drinking needs to become the norm at our club, not the exception.
  10. I really think we need to lose the 'luxury player' tag in this country for players who show a bit of craft. England should have built a team around Le tissier. They should have done the same with Hoddle, Scholes and Cole. But no, we prefer to give caps to Batty and Carlton Palmer. Maybe you couldn't win a WC with those 'luxury' players but you sure as hell can't without them. The only time we've come close since '66 is when we built a team around pre-injury Gazza. We'll probably get raped again in Brazil and then the usual inquests will abound about how crap our coaching is.... technique... blah, blah. Then when we finally find someone we want to coach the skill out of him. I honestly wonder what would have happened to the diminutive Messi if he'd been English. Too small and lightweight for the PL i'd suspect or didn't track back enough. I look forward to seeing Joe play. I always rated him and he nearly always made a difference when he was on the pitch (as far as I could see). It might be a little late in the day for him but this has at least brightened up my day after a shocking season of tripe. I don't think it was a case of coaching the skill out of Joe, more adding a bit of discipline and tactical awareness to his game. It made him more effective over all, with a few less tricks and flicks. Goals and assists are the key and he got more when he added a bit of graft to his guile. I totally agree with your points on technique etc and slightly off topic, but I do think we are move in the right direction in that sense. Look at the generation of players in there now - Wiltshire, Barkley, Chamberlain, Sterling, Shaw, Lallana and Sturridge. All great technically, all capable of doing things that are a little bit special. I really want Cole to succeed, I wouldn't put him in the same class as the others you mention (le Tiss etc), but he was/is a quality player. I'm just not sure he's capable of delivering consistently in that role, in an average team that's been flirting with relegation for 3 or 4 years.
  11. We've still got Bent. Can Cole and N'Zogbia actually provide chances for him? That's been the biggest problem under Lambert, a lack of craft in attacking positions. If we create then I have a feeling Bent could still score goals. A few seasons ago Bent up top with Cole and Nzog behind him would have been a goal-fest. Sadly, it is not a few seasons ago. What I wouldn't give for a flux capacitor.
  12. If it isn't sustainable now then we really are in the shit. Although I suppose Bent, Given, Nzogbia and Hutton are still eating away at the coffers, so I'd doubt there will be much wiggle room in the budget just yet.
  13. "Clearly" you are just speculating about that. Nope I am ITK
  14. Spot on. Lambert of obviously saw some kind of raw potential (which to be fair I think he showed when he played), but it was going to be a gamble and maybe he just hasn't developed as much as he (Lambert) would have liked. We paid peanuts and got peanuts back, ok we wasted some wages, but he was probably on next to nothing anyway (in relevant terms) I'd rather see more of these types of signings than players like Harewood and Heskey, who we knew were going to be shit. At lest Bowery has only been shit in hindsight!
  15. Jose ruined Joe Cole. Some players you have to allow a bit of freedom. I see what you mean, but for me he was in danger of becoming a luxury player, who only turned it on in patches. Jose may have taken some of the flair away, but he scored more goals, got more assists , played more games and became an integral part of that side under his management. I think it also helped his international career. Had he not adapted to jose's style, I think he would have ended up being like Taarabt - amazingly talented and showed it. Once every 10-15 games. Enigmatic number 10's are wonderful to watch on their day, but I'm not convinced we are strong enough, or cole has enough left in the tank to build a side around him. Which is what I think you have to do to get the best form a player like him in that role. Could be a useful squad player though if he can stay fit.
  16. If we played his ego up front, it would get at least 30 league goals I reckon.
  17. Shucks you got me there mardybum Back on topic This thread needs closing for a bit because there is clearly no $200m takeover happening, what do you reckon?!
  18. It's a forum to discuss things. If you want news as and when it happens I suggest visiting the various sports news websites dotted around the place. Instead of posting pointless things like how you think the thread should be closed, I suggest you just avoid the thread altogether if you don't want to read the discussion. How about we let the Mods decide when to close a thread, yeah? Lol it was a comment on the pointlessness of it all - pull your panties out your bum, yeah?
  19. I wouldn't. He is the epitome of average. He'd fit right in then!
  20. This thread needs closing and a new one opening when there is actually something to report. There is no $200m US Takeover and no sale on the horizon. Even the red tops have given trying to make shit up and the ITK's have gone MIA. It's done for the time being, let's all just get excited by the game of 'freebie roulette' we are playing with the new signings!
  21. I agree with this, but it also concerns me. It's his best position by far IMO, but he's shown no kind of form for a few seasons now. By all accounts he did ok in France, but I don't think he was lighting it up over there, in a much slower, inferior league and He struggled at west ham last season. We need a number 10 who can influence a game on regular basis. Someone who can link the midfield/forward line and play passes with a bit of vision. He's undoubtably got the talent to be that , but it's going to be hard to recapture the form after when it's been missing for a while.
  22. Odd one. Not sure he's still got it in him to be honest. Cracking player in his day and Jose turned him into a proper team player, but he's fallen pretty hard and fast since then. If he's got the hunger and can stay fit, then maybe he could surprise. I hope so because he's definitely the type of player we have been in dire need of.
  23. And they were relegated after he left - maybe they should have kept him?!
  24. Yeah I know what you mean - Arsenal, Milan, Everton and Valencia were scrapping for their lives when they signed him! How many of them were relegated again?!
