  1. Disagree. He's an attacking full back, for sure, I meant more so the bizarre way in which Gerrard used them though. He had the full backs often times playing as the highest wide players when it's not in their skillset to carry, dribble the ball and ostensibly play like wingers in such a system. Digne is very much still a full back in the sense of he gets forward by timing overlapping runs and so forth, we saw that at times and he proved to be effective but for much of his time under Gerrard he and Cash were deployed in roles that just didn't work.
  2. Injuries allowing, we'll see a lot more of what Digne can do when he's actually utilised as a full back and not some preposterous pseudo-winger role that never suited him.
  3. Surprised by how little he's caught fire, have always thought he looked possibly the most exciting out of his crop out of the academy but it just hasn't happened for him between the injuries and whatever else. Hopefully that goal - what a goal by the way - will be what he needs to find some rhythm.

On a related note to the above, this for the third goal was bizarre to me. With VAR being a thing now there is no need to distract yourself by calling for offside, just keep doing your job and that will sort itself out. He seems so pre-occupied with doing so here that he doesn't attempt to cut out a quite softly-hit pass that ends up being played in behind him.
  5. Jackson has mostly played down the middle this season as kind of a second striker from a brief check. Although it seems like he has the kind of attributes to play across the front line.
  6. Don't know much about Jackson other than he's been a bit of a late bloomer that Villarreal seem quite high on this season. Apparently quite raw but is tall, strong and rapid which I'm all for considering how weak we're made to look in certain games such as on Saturday.
  7. If he makes any formation work then I don't think anyone should really care specifically what it is. The 4-4-2 Villarreal sometimes played also wasn't a conventional one and kind of became a 4-3-3 in a sense, as one of the 2 (Danjuma) would pull wide left and the left-sided midfielder was often a central player like Lo Celso that would then move inside. It was obviously something he identified would work for the personnel he had as he hadn't much of a track record for playing it previously, so however he chooses to have Villa play will likely be based on what he feels is the best to get the most from the options he has. Which makes a change from the past year...
  8. I like Lo Celso a lot too, even when he was at Spurs he did a good job of getting through loads of work in terms of tackles etc as well as the creative side that most people probably associate him with. The way he was used at times at Villarreal was a bit unconventional too so suggests he's quite smart tactically and could be used in different kinds of roles in midfield. Also the kind of profile of player you could see Villa realistically attracting.
  9. It's incredible how much they managed to shift the narrative on themselves. You would have found very few people that weren't happy to see them go up and didn't want them to make a good fist of it, but by going so overboard in the summer they've managed to make it so that now most would just find it funny if and when they go down.

He won one of his first ten games, including a loss to Cambridge.
  11. And yeah, in any case in terms of centre back you'd imagine nobody is coming in until some go out. The whole saga around Sarr was weird, but if we're to believe what was reported and he was vetoed by Gerrard, then it suggests the club had identified a winger as being a necessary position to fill, especially given Bailey is the only player in the squad that out-and-out fits that description. Villa may not go back in for him but you'd think if any position is being prioritised in January then that'll be the one.
  12. I agree on the whole, but at the same time I'm just saying that the idea of Torres specifically is unrealistic even if it isn't impossible. Circumstances vary for every player and in his case there's a lot that would indicate it won't happen even if Emery is Villa manager now. I feel like the attitude in response to being skeptical of being able to get a certain level of player in has become "well why not" as if it's we're not talking completely in hypotheticals lol. I've certainly been surprised before by Villa though so who knows, I was stunned we got Kamara for example albeit certain factors made that more likely than what we're talking about. Just can't see it, though I wouldn't be complaining!
  13. Although there's been improvements I still find the way head injuries are handled in football to be concerning. Love Martinez and always want him on the pitch for Villa, but I'd rather him be healthy and not put at risk in the process. He really should have been off straight away yesterday once it was clear how serious of a knock he had taken rather than being allowed to try to soldier on. Glad to see he's OK.
  14. I just think it'd be surprising to see Villa spend £50ish million on any one player in the immediate future is all, for one it'd be the highest fee ever paid by a club outside of the top 6 and that's without getting into the other factors that make signing Torres highly improbable. Don't necessarily disagree with you generally, though at the same time it's more about how you spend rather than what you spend as Villa have shown in recent years by consistently overpaying for players.
  15. I appreciate the sentiment of this and I know it's generally the response when anyone thinks it's unrealistic for us to sign a player now, but I still can't see it specifically in the case of Torres. Bigger, more attractive clubs than Villa haven't been able to sign him yet and I don't think Emery alone can make it happen here. Furthermore I think everyone is in agreement that Villa need to be wiser with how they spend money, and in the case of Torres you're talking €55-60 million just to pay his release clause, to only improve one position in a squad and in turn limit how much you can spread elsewhere.
  16. I would imagine there's no way that we're signing him. He's a local lad there that has been courted by numerous top sides who have been unable to prise him away thus far, when he eventually does move it'll be to a club in that upper bracket.
  17. Well now I don't know what to think.
  18. Wolves (H), Leeds (H), Southampton (A) and Leicester (H) in a row in the new year could be a run that transforms the season to be fair. All sides that are either worse or somehow in even greater disarray than Villa have been.
  19. Big fan of his but one thing that consistently worries me about him regardless of whether he's playing well or poorly is that for the area of the pitch he operates in he's terribly slow at PL level, and doesn't have enough quality in shooting opportunities around the edge of the box. He gets in good positions but often tries to shift the ball sideways or has a tame effort at goal, I had a quick glance and his goals to xG ratio is amongst the worst in the entire league which really should not be the case. Much like the majority of the squad, I'm holding out hope that Emery and co can manage to get the most out of him.
  20. I think we'll be fine as we have the quality in the dugout and enough generally in the squad to not worry too much about relegation in the end, though I think it may get worse before it gets better given the run of fixtures to come.
  21. Remember when folk were certain that this fella was better than Callum Wilson

For the third goal he's too busy appealing for offside - as if it makes a difference anyway - rather than cutting out the pass played behind him or getting out of Cash's way. So poor.
  23. Konsa has been horrible on the ball thus far. Good start though, crazy how much of a difference playing a suitable shape and proper coaching has made.

Just finished it myself. It's well worth the listen.
