  1. Aouar is great but also one of those players that constantly gets linked here there and everywhere without anything happening. Will believe it when I see it.
  2. Despite fearing being called a bed wetter I do think it's a shame that Emery specified that he wanted a winger, as well as a midfielder if Sanson and Nakamba left and it doesn't look like that'll occur, which in the process leaves us short on numbers/quality with around half of the season left to play. If they couldn't get the targets in then that's just how the cookie crumbles though. Would be interesting to see if there were any loan deals going just to plug the gap until the summer.
  3. I am all for this, love Bertie. Looking forward to having my head in my hands one minute as he attempts a first time volleyed switch of play from a throw in that goes straight to the opposition winger, and then thinking he's an absolute world beater the next when he nutmegs a full back and sticks one in the top corner.
  4. I wouldn't really describe Gallagher as a good passer at all at this level. He has tremendous energy and some great moments of quality in and around the box, but he's sloppy and that's why he for now isn't at the level to fit in at a side like Chelsea. His passing is below average, his numbers for miscontrols/being dispossessed are among the worst going and he gives away an awful lot of fouls. I do think he'd probably be quite effective in one of the more advanced midfield roles in Emery's system though as it'd put more emphasis on his good points and less on the bad.
  5. I get that but at the same time 5 subs makes it more of a squad game than ever, and added to that Emery really makes use of them too. I'd be surprised if for the remainder of the season a 19 year old kid signed from the MLS was the only out and out forward option off the bench (all going well with injuries etc).
  6. Augustinsson going leaves I think 19 senior outfield players, with Carlos out injured for another while and Nakamba and Chambers seemingly being encouraged to find new clubs. Not up in arms at all about signings (of lack thereof) nor do I have any issue with any of the departures, but it does seem weird to go into the remainder of the season that short on numbers. Especially in certain areas of the pitch. Would be surprised if an attacking player at least doesn't come in before the end of the window in some capacity.
  7. I'm surprised we weren't linked at all given the type pf player we've been looking for. He's been great this season, right age profile etc.
  8. Honestly I see more moaning about panicking than actual panicking half the time. Feel like some folk need to calm down even more than the people they're telling to calm down Will be interesting to see how things play out, we've had so many things come out of the blue in recent times that I don't think there's any way you can be confident one way or the other. I'd be surprised if a winger doesn't come in being that Emery specified one as a priority, and the squad is quite threadbare in that area of the pitch at the moment. As much as folk are saying we could get lucky with injuries and be fine for the rest of the season, five subs has introduced a new dynamic and you're more likely to pay for it now than previously if you have a dearth of options in your squad.
  9. Not to read too much into friendlies or anything but as far as I remember he was the best performing CB in pre-season and it felt a bit unlucky for him to miss out of the side initially. On the other hand he's looked quite ropey anytime he's featured under Emery - albeit again mostly in friendlies - where ironically despite his reputation he's looked the most uncomfortable with the expectations placed upon the defenders in terms of taking more touches, playing out from the back etc. Considering he was signed for next to nothing I think he's done exactly the job he was signed for quite well though. Nothing special but can cover a few positions at least competently at this level.
  10. Everton have spent over 20 million on something like 25 players and are complete shite. There's no blanket rule when it comes to transfers so I never get just moaning over the specific number spent as if it's the be-all and end-all. Kamara wouldn't be a better player if Villa generously gave Marseilles 40 million for him rather than jumping on the opportunity to get him for free.
  11. West Ham at home? Weren't creating much as a team but those pair were working well, largely controlling the midfield. Gerrard took Luiz off for Ramsey and they scored soon after without Villa ever looking any danger at all.
  12. Appreciate that obviously players should not be signed for the sake of it etc but against Southampton the bench featured two goalkeepers and a player who has since departed. The squad could do with getting at least a couple of the right deals done before the end of the window.

    Jhon Durán

Already a winner. Not to put pressure on but I'd be stunned if he doesn't come off the bench and start banging in goals like Haaland immediately.
  14. Big fan of Ziyech. Less so of current Aubameyang.
  15. Maybe I'm just more privy to it being a Villa fan but it does seem weird that in the age of being in contact with players before even bidding for them that it's a semi-often occurrence for Villa to be turned down by them. I suppose it's just been said that we were prepared to pay the buy-out rather than outright offered so maybe that is the case. Interesting one all the same. With the profile of player Williams is it would have been difficult to manage anyway, but the added context of him being Basque/playing for Athletic Club introduces added complications. Encouraging that the funds are there anyway as you'd imagine there will be other targets of a similar profile.
  16. Wasn't really pointless, ensured we had 4 CBs still while Carlos was out injured and now goes back with him closer to fitness + with the likes of Dendoncker, Kamara that could cover in the event Villa were really stuck. Will be one of those that you forget even happened in a couple of years time but he came in useful at times all the same.
  17. Mad to think that there were Villa and Everton fans last summer who didn't like the idea of Zinchenko signing for them when there were tenuous links. The guy is excellent.
  18. It's a testament to him that he's still improving, after that first season I'd have been surprised if he had much growth left in him given the level he was already at but he really is something else. Always feel lucky to have an undeniably world class player at Villa.
  19. Genuinely can't really believe there was any criticism for his performance earlier. I can appreciate he can be a limited player at times, certainly one that can be improved upon, but one thing he did as well as anything vs Southampton was "link play" and he literally scored the winner to top it off with his only real chance which is pretty clinical as it goes. It was a pretty top performance in terms of leading the line away from home for me. I'd have much more faith in him going forward if that was how he was playing week in week out to be honest.

    Unai Emery

Considering I used to just take for granted that we'd give leads away I can't really fathom how comfortable we've looked in defending them under Emery. Against United, Brighton, Spurs and the game today etc I never really had any fear in the final few minutes which makes an enormous change. Seeing a plan and calmness in place to see games out is such a relief compared to what has come before.
