  1. It is not the Israeli state. It is the Jewish and Democratic State of Israel, or at least they officially describe the state as Jewish and Democratic. Magic "for the people" legal work by Bibi and partners. This is a relatively recent development, but does present difficulties w.r.t. to many of the standard well worn anti-semitism arguments (they are separate entities, for example). Of course, it opens up lots of new ones, so all is well.
  2. US Sec. of State Blinken "There is no equivalence between Israel legitimately defending itself and the terrorist group Hamas' rocket attacks" Partially bastardized quote... but essentially an official and public green light from the Biden administration for Netanyahu.
  3. The lovefest on the beeb generally and livetext right now is nauseating.
  4. Some of those long term, slow roll costs.
  5. It's always the same story with lockdowns. If "they" had just decided to implement it X weeks earlier then there would be clear evidence in the data showing how lockdowns decisively damp and prevent a new outbreak.
  6. I'd love to know how this is being discussed at leadership levels in Israel. Previous gems include "cutting the grass", which has been used to describe these type of assaults on the Gaza concentration camp.
  7. Perhaps, but they'll have some going to do when compared to the warmongering Cheney's. It was only last year that she was shoving amendments into budget bills to defund any potential withdrawal from Afghan or Syria.
  8. USA, USA, USA... 1 gas lad, 1 average human.
  9. I made no relative comment about values. Cheney is the true definition of a scumbag politician. Good riddance. She can hardly show her face in her "home" state, she's so popular.
  10. Big WHO commissioned covid report out today, regarding lessons to be learned and things todo. They do flag the opening day of this thread for their failure to declare and emergency that day, until ~10 later due to bureaucracy/national politics. Hindsight and all that. "The Covid-19 pandemic was preventable, an independent review panel has said. The panel, set up by the World Health Organization, said the combined response of the WHO and global governments was a "toxic cocktail". The WHO should have declared a global emergency earlier than it did, its report said, adding that without urgent change the world was vulnerable to another major disease outbreak." https://www.bbc.com/news/world-57085505 The report can be grabbed below. "Since September 2020, the Independent Panel has systematically, rigorously and comprehensively examined why COVID-19 became a global health and socio-economic crisis. In May 2021, the Panel presented its findings and recommendations for action to curb the COVID-19 pandemic and to ensure that any future infectious disease outbreak does not become another catastrophic pandemic." https://theindependentpanel.org
  11. Deathtoll at 51 - 6 today, with the Israelis leading in this downplayed by the media and counterintuitively scored contest.
  12. The creature Cheney has been ousted by the republicans. Roll on 2022 and we can finally see that family drummed from the political scene.
  13. You appear to be a loyal subject of her Majesty.
  14. ^ this is why both parties should have to place money down in escrow. Hopefully, it's just genuine lack of organization/silliness on their end.
  15. Yup, that Netanyahu is in all sorts of legal trouble and is having trouble forming a government has nothing to do with this. A big shout out to the Biden administration?/regime? who ran interference at the security council yesterday to ensure that a meagre %$***#$ statement condemning the violence could not be issued.
  16. Useful context provided by Juan Cole below. "This would be as though Israeli commandos had invaded the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome during Easter services, shooting rubber bullets and throwing stun grenades and flash bombs." https://www.juancole.com/2021/05/israelis-attacked-jerusalem.html
  17. Gas shortages beginning along the southeast due to the pipeline ransomware attack. The pipeline is not going to be fully re-opened until next weekend. This will be a nice headache for the administration given the ongoing post-covid re-opening and the American yearning for a road trip.
  18. 9 children amongst the dead from IDF overnight bombing. Just a little collateral damage though because they did get some Hamas bad men too.
  19. Absolutely typical that it's a Villa player the FA decide to take a stand against. Clowns. Clear contact, which he was maximizing the life out of, but no way is that a yellow.
  20. Stinks like the orange order marches during the 80s/90s and the official backing/stench associated with them.
  21. My quip was a point regarding your description of the Greens, no more. Interesting how you regard those on the true left as toxic. Socialism is not communism by the way, though your understanding of the issue would make you fit in very well over here
  22. The enviro crisis and social justice (not in the pejorative way of our time meaning) are the core tenets of the modern Greens, and many of them would prefer to have enviro subsumed as it is fairness and a just society more broadly that they desire, and tackling that issue automatically requires addressing many of the causes of the environmental issues. The evolution of the green party in the past 25 yrs as it has become more relevant has been really interesting. The upcoming German elections are going to be real eye-openers to see where they are, as they have a real shot at Merkel's job! and how media/big-money reacts to this possibility will be quite revealing. I wonder how Starmer, the systems-man, would fair in Germany.
  23. Apparently 3 states in the US allow execution by firing squad! South Carolina is poised to become state number 4, in the year 2021! "The state House voted 66-43 Wednesday on legislation that would allow death row inmates to choose between being shot or electrocuted if lethal injection drugs aren't available. The state is one of nine that still use the electric chair and will become the fourth to use firing squads. The state Senate approved the bill in March. After another routine vote in the House, the bill will head to the desk of Republican Gov. Henry McMaster, who said he will sign it.
