  1. If Levy hadn't tried to be so clever that summer we were in financial trouble he could've got Grealish for an absolute song. His own stingyness cost Spurs the opportunity to have Grealish up front with Kane and Son. We'd have never been promoted without Grealish that following season.
  2. Great thread! Imagine we'd beaten United in that inaugural Premier League season. We were well matched clubs with a very similar history and pedigree. Look where they went to on the back of that title and look where we've been ever since....
  3. Odd that Tuanzebe has never kicked on. He looked as good as Mings during that run in to promotion - they were brilliant together. I think I heard on the radio the other night that United were due to release him on a free.
  4. Thought Ben White would be out of contention after the World Cup. Didn't he walk out because he wasn't getting picked?
  5. Even that's hearsay - no one knows exactly what involvement he has had except those within the club.
  6. I guess it depends on the player and where he is in his career but certainly at the highest level where teams are competing for the best players that's the way it works. Teams know what they'll have to pay to have a champions league level player over three or four seasons, so if they pay a transfer fee plus wages over that four year period or pay a signing on fee and wages over that time it'll balance out to the market rate either way. We're paying Kamara a bucketload in lieu of paying OM a fee, but we're still essentially paying a total of £Xm to have him play for us for Y number of years.
  7. Free transfers generally work out as the same financial outlay as paying a transfer fee - we'll just be paying him a premium in wages and signing fee instead of a fee to his club. Can't really remember how well he did for Arsenal but I guess if Emery does want him again he must've done well.
  8. Pretty obvious that it came from Grealish’s side just like Delph did with his contract before he left. Villa aren’t going to offer those clauses for nothing. If it’s a £100m release clause or no new deal and he leaves for a fraction of that then you agree to the release clause. Fairly basic negotiation stuff. Even two years on getting £100m for a player from a bottom half PL club is good going.
  9. A few of the pundits commented on that video and how much sense it made to put it out, including Henry Winter and Gary Linekar. If Purslow had said that it would've been all over the media. He's a businessman he doesn't get emotional or bothered about this stuff.
  10. As good as Mings/Konsa have been defensively since Emery arrived I guess the question now is can the like of Pau Torres be as good or better defensively but also improve how we start our attacks from the back? That's maybe were they've identified room for improvement - especially against top level sides. Emery will likely want to take us to a level where we are competing on every level against elite sides, rather than a 6-2-2 where we've hit them on the break.
  11. He'll be heading toward his mid 30s for the latter half of that contract. I don't think he's the elite talent he was even at this stage so £200k for 4 years is an insane contract to offer him.
  12. He seems more suited to the right hand side of a back 3 at this stage. I think he’s ideal for the RB position in Emery’s current set up.
  13. It’d be crazy to start next season with an unproven PL striker regardless of what their stats are. Some of the best strikers in the world have come to the premier league and flopped. There’s no way we’ll be selling a proven PL scorer to replace him with an unknown.
  14. It’ll be May on Monday and we’re in fifth. Unbelievable.
  15. Guendouzi's a no-brainer at that sort of money. Seems crazy cheap though. I reckon we'll go all out for an elite level right winger to take Bailey's place - break transfer record to get whoever it is. It's clear we need to invest in a No.2 goal-keeper who might be a cup goal keeper or play the European games if we make it. Wonder will they pick-up an experienced keeper from Spain with a similar age and value profile to Moreno.
  16. Is Guendouzi still likely to be an option given that McGinn has that particular position nailed down, is club captain, and in form of his life? If he's going to cost £50-60m he'd need to be starting. Who's position would he take?
  17. Out of interest when would this photo have been taken? Did he show the VP crowd his medal back in January?
  18. Would be surprised if he does. I think an attacking full back on one side and a defensive one on the other is pretty much Emery's hallmark at this stage. I think the big signing this summer will be a right winger. Whoever plays at right back will be defensive minded as opposed to a right sided version of Moreno.
  19. It's Sawaris and Edens who should ultimately determine the moral compass of the club not the CEO. It's Purslow's job to get the best deals he can for the club. It's up to the owners to say the we're not going to advertise betting companies and for Purslow to adapt accordingly.
  20. Supposedly he got Gerrard in to make his pitch to the owners who ultimately hired him. I guess it's impossible to know if he recommended him to Edens and Sawaris, but given he didn't get anyone else in to make a pitch for the job he does have to shoulder a big chunk of the blame. I think once you bring a manager in you have to back him so you can't really blame him for signing Digne and Coutinho. The Gerrard appointment excluded I think Purslow's been excellent for the club.
  21. Lol - that was that moment of magic Stevie G was searching for…
  22. Wonder will they bring Elmo in to have some involvement in this. He seems to have remained quite close to Villa since he retired.
  23. Teams are playing much higher risk passes from the back nowadays though. City have been picked off a few times recently with high risk passes when they’re being pressed. Pep’s (and maybe Emery’s) analysts will probably have worked out the risk of conceding versus the reward of beating a high press through the middle and reckon it’s worth it.
  24. Quite similar to Liverpool game and both were after long spells without a game when Emery has had loads time to train with the players. I wonder has he been working on the more long term strategy in these longer periods without a game and the players are coming up short in the games so he’ll revert to a more short term fix again for next few games?
  25. Also played Ramsey in the front three in that game and he was superb. Set up Bailey's goal IIRC. He never played him there again..... Bizarre manager.
