  1. Yes, I would agree, Smith had run his course as much as I liked the man. When we needed an upgrade we ended up with Gerrard who is, at best, the same level as Smith. Once Gerrard is gone we need to pull out all the stops to get a top manager.
  2. Were they? I watched Arsenal a fair bit and you could always see what they were trying to achieve. Quick movement in and around the box, speed etc. We look completely directionless and have done for the longest time
  3. I don't think it's the fact he has been dropped but more the entire noise a round it. Gerrard could well do without extra sticks to beat him.
  4. I'm not sure what the exact situation is, only the people involved do. However, this seems to be developing into quite a negatiystory a round the club. The management need to quash this and quickly as Mings has a lot more goodwill in the bank than Gerrard does and it'll be just another thing in the litany of problems related to Gerrard
  5. I appreciate that and that's why I don't think we have as much to drop on a midfielder/ striker as some may think.
  6. I don't know really. Last summer we had pretty much zero net spend, this summer it's pretty close to a 10million net spend. We spent a bit in January but it does seem to me either the FFP is closer than people think or we are dialing back on the spending.
  7. Do we? That's good So if we're not spending does that mean we have to assume our owners are cutting back?
  8. In some ways that's kind of what I mean. Though I don't think we have as much to spend as some fans think we do
  9. The price of a top striker is beyond us. Our strikers may not be perfect but they are far better than they are being allowed to show. Another 30m striker will make little to no difference. Are our strikers European level? Possibly not. Our manager certainly isn't and we seem to be happy to give him the chance to improve. Hey, I'm willing to accept I could be wrong, but I think any other striker would be looking at the chances we create as a team and wonder how they are expected to score off such scraps.
  10. Maybe you're right but a shit show against Everton, similar to the one against Bournemouth, and the Villa Park crowd will start to turn on him.
  11. What's the point in spending on a striker if we're not set up to create any chances for them?
  12. In isolation it is but it's part of a whole raft of mistakes that led to such a poor performance yesterday. What ever your view on Mings ability, Gerrard has treated him poorly in terms of captaincy.
  13. It would. Especially if it looks like we know how they were won, with a well executed game plan. At the moment we rely on a player producing a moment rather than a team knowing what it's doing. It's like Man Utd under Solskjaer
  14. Looking back through the beginning of the thread I had forgotten how generally disappointed and wary the majority of posters were about this appointment. Seems we do know football
  15. Exactly this. He has zero flexibility. It's like he doesn't watch the games or know the opposition. I thought he was a poor appointment when he started and he seems intent on backing up that opinion
  16. Possibly we would lose the game if Mings played though he would at least have provided some height to combat Bournemouth. Really though dropping Mings was one of several whopping great mistakes that led to such a poor performance and result.
  17. Joined March the 4th 2006. We beat Portsmouth that day with a Baros goal. I was probably a lot more positive and a lot less cynical about Villa in those days.
  18. It should be Martinez Cash. Carlos. Mings. Digne Luiz. Kamara Bailey. Buendia. Coutinho Watkins But it won't be. Gerrard will, obviously, not drop an underperforming McGinn and will stick with his shitty 433 system.
  19. Even you must have some alarm bells ringing concerning some of the decisions that are being made?
  20. Well his football is starting to resemble Steve Bruce's...
  21. It's pretty much what we do every game and why we create so few clear chances. That is our game plan.
  22. Yeah, those decisions are very worrying. I like McGinn for what he's done for us but I was hoping he would become a squad player this summer. Instead it's almost certain that he will start every game. Not only does that me we are going to play with a midfielder not up to the task, we will also be sticking to a formation that doesn't work with the squad. Gerrard is making so many mistakes at the moment and I don't think he has the ability to turn it round.
  23. Save ourselves some time and a few painful months. Sack him now.
